If only...
> if only I were...
> if only I had...
> if only I knew...
No matter how good our lives are, there always seems to be something lacking...
Most of us have used the "if only" phrase at one point or another. But excessively "if only" thinking will keep us in a mental state of inadequacy and constant wanting.
One may argue that the "if only" is a self-reflection of being aware of our regrets. Shouldn't we strive to achieve a better self by knowing what is our regret? But when we are constantly stuck in these "if only" thinking, we are preoccupied only with what we lack. It is also incredibly dampening on our spirit.
"If only I had a better job!" "If only I had a better boss/ team/ colleagues/ friends!"
We always hear these at the workplace. What was once a job we loved has turned into something we begrudgingly do, because...
.. the work has become rote after a few years
.. we don't like our new boss or colleagues, or
.. we were not given that recognition, the raise or the promotion...
That's when we have stopped seeing the favourable aspects of our job which attracted us previously. Isn't it quite odd? Most of us love stability, yet when it gets too comfortable, we complain about how life is boring and un-stimulating.
With leaps in technologies advancement operating in the present dynamic, volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world, consider how fortunate we are to even have a job that has not been taken over by the artificial intelligence (A.I). Work that helps us grow our competencies (if we allow it to), income that enables us to afford what we want, supervisors and colleagues we can learn from (be it good or bad lessons).
How often do we open our eyes to the blessings already around us? Discontentment is not only a strain on our peace of mind... It is also disregarding and disrespectful of just how good our lives are. Do we overlook our already "have"s and focuses on our "have not"s?
For positive changes, we need to adopt more empowering thought patterns...
* Instead of thinking "if only I had an attractive body", we can put in efforts for better health or fitness.
* Instead of wishing we were smarter, we can acquire more knowledge.
* Instead of craving for more money, we can be grateful for just how rich our lives already are in other aspects - body, mind and soul.
What are your empowering thoughts for today?
