Today's Training World

I am a person who believes that periodical Training & development programs are mandatory for the staff for a health growth of an organization and for the individual. As we also have a company that provides training programs, we often get requests for training programs on various soft-skills and technical skill related programs.

While, as a policy we do not provide a training just based on a request.. we analyse the need for the training program, the caliber/ experience of the attendees and then tailor make a program to suit the need of the organization in line with the participants. This is done only after a thorough analysis and after defining the clear outcome of the program. We ensure that it is clearly laid out that a 1 day or a 5 day program cannot bring out the expected change in the organization and that has to be a continuous process where there is a handholding (post training support) to ensure the desired outcome.

However, most of the clients do not want to go through any of these process. They just want a training program as per their requirement. We end up losing that client. We have no issues in that. We do not want to compromise on the quality that we offer for a revenue that would create a dent in our principle. I do not mean to hurt or offend any trainers or companies by what I believe. I am talking about my perception and my belief.

However hard I try, I am unable to understand how a one day workshop or a 2 days training program can change an individual or create a positive / negative impact on the individual or the institution? When the trainer knows nothing about me in detail, when the person who fixes the training program has perhaps done based on a target that needs to be completed and has not considered these facts put above, what would be the outcome of the program? However extraordinar they trainer may be.

Every individual has a different learning style. So in a group of 50 participants how will the trainer be able to create an impact with the short period he / she has got? Isnt it high time that we make this wise investment in training with some scientifical and practical approach so that the ROI is calculated on every program. ROI need not be just commercial, I mean the intellectual, personal, development that an individual or an organization gains is also an ROI. Can the investment in development be done in this basis?
