Simulation and Modelling 2019

Simulation and Modelling 2019

A highlight of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' events calendar, the Simulation and Modelling 2019 conference provides a two day forum for engineers across multiple industries to raise key challenges and share innovative uses and technical solutions. Through case study presentations, Q&A sessions and panel discussions, attendees will take back the best practice they need to enhance their design and prototyping processes while reducing the associated costs involved.

Plus, engineers will have the chance to meet and share their challenges with key software providers involved, including Simulia, Claytex, MSC Software, Maya HTT, Altair, AC&E and FEMFAT.

With just a week to go, our speakers explain the importance of taking part in this year's conference, which takes place on 17-18 September in Birmingham.

"Simulation can bring significant benefits to a huge range of organisations. It can support more innovative designs that reduce material costs through optimisation. It can help reduce energy costs by identifying more efficient ways to run processes. It can reduce waste by improving product reliability. It’s not a cure all, its results do need to be critically assessed, and it can’t replace engineering knowledge, but it can help you get more information to support your decisions." Louise Wright, Science Area Leader for Modelling, National Physical Laboratory

"I really see the value in getting insight into what my peers at other companies are working on and how this is improving their capability. It provides a real think tank of process and procedures across industry which stokes a passion to improve your own working practices." Adam Brooke, Senior Principal Engineer, Modelling and Simulation, Fuel and Actuation Sub-Systems, Rolls-Royce

"I think it is important as engineers in a growing industry to be aware of the latest ideas and to learn from each other. There is a huge range of applications on showcase during the event, but the underlying skills are the same and I always come away with ideas about how a new technology or method could be applied to my job." Dom Dathan, Aero-thermal Engineer, d2HAero

"There is a huge and conflicting requirement set cascaded from industry to education on what graduates need to know. It is really difficult to validate and balance these. You might say ‘graduates need to be better at communicating’ but what is the priority for this compared to being able to calculate the mode-shapes of a system? This is an opportunity to provide feedback and to have your voice heard." Claire Lucas, Associate Professor and Director of Studies for Systems and Information Engineering, Warwick University
