Purpose + Work + Team = Peak Experience

Purpose + Work + Team = Peak Experience

Today I had an inspiring conversation with a forward-thinking Rioter about the work he does with individuals and groups to help them surface, articulate, and embrace their most fundamental "purpose" - Telos.

Telos - the end term of a goal-directed process; especially, the Aristotelian  final cause.

The context of our conversation was team chartering and the importance of aligning a group of humans to a shared vision and purpose. While this is always a very rewarding and enlightening activity as a group facilitator, and most times it is the same for the participants, it can be challenging to introduce the more vulnerable, personal aspect of the individuals into the experience. We might try identifying team values, or indirectly through creating team working agreements....but that is less about our noble purpose and more about our meaningful work.

So our conversation was about the potential of integrating the rich output from individual sessions on purpose into a group purpose and then bringing that into the team chartering process. Like most brilliant ideas, it sounded obvious after the fact, but I've led enough group processes and chartering sessions to know that it is not obvious how to bring such personal content into this context of "how we work together and align as a team."

I'm very excited about the opportunity that I see emerging - right now in my mind, hopefully soon in practice - to integrate these aspects of identity to form.....well, I was going to say team but that's inadequate.....a cohort of humans creating a powerful, unique, peak experiences in their professional lives.

I just love what I do and the challenges that come with it!
