Picking the right one
Did you know you can have a field with a link to anything in an Exact Synergy request?
It’s been a while since my last post, so to get slowly into the groove today a quickie.
I have read about this trick some time ago, but I don’t remember where or who, so my apologize for not giving credit to him\her. However, I suspect a lot of you may not be familiar with it and it is a nice little trick.
The case
When you design a request in Exact Synergy often you want reference other information in your database. For linking Accounts, Projects or Items you have your standard fields available. However, in the free fields at your disposable, you can add a selection based on a query.
An example - Costcenters
Let’s say I have a request and I want to link a costcenter to this request for classification. This is not something which is available by default in a request.
So, what you see a lot is they create the costcenters as a list of Items. That way the costcenters can be referenced in a request. The obvious downside is that you have is that you need to maintain both the costcenters and the ‘items’ to keep the list complete.
The solution
An alternative is that you add a free field and add a query in it, like so:
This query will display the costcenters linked to division 802 in my request.
On a database level the costcenter code will be saved to the database, but the description is displayed for the user.
Other examples
Basically, anything that you can query you can display in a request in this fashion.
Such as:
- Account classifications
- GL accounts
- Journals from a Globe database,
- A selection of employees in a certain role
In conclusion
I hope this little trick will help you in your use of Exact Synergy and I will try to make a better effort in publishing new materials.
