I am writing this article as a recruiter. I lived the 2008 crisis as a recruiter and I know we are headed for a new context in which there will be more candidates than jobs.
So how do you prepare for it?
I am recommending 4 top skills for you to develop especially since we all seem to have more time on our hands right now. I deliberately say "seem" because this is the time to act so you should not have time pass you by.
🎯 1. - Selling
When there are more candidates than jobs, to "sell" your resume, your skills will be crucial. Do you still feel that selling is something somehow perverse or unethical or...? Change this perspective. When you come in front of a recruiter, you sell! Take responsibility for that and do no wait for me, the recruiter, to squeeze you of all your potential, help me and sell. Do it ethically, yes, sell the real you, yes, but do not be so shy to hope that I will always be able to see your potential. Not all recruiters are the same.
So train yourself for the interview. This is where you sell. Train especially to answer why you should be their/my number one choice for the job.
🎯 2 - Promoting Yourself
If nobody knows about you, how can you get the best job for you?
Are your resumes on all recruiting platforms?
Are you here on Linkedin?
Do you post about your passions? About your interests? About your industry? About things you understood from your experience? Elegantly comment.
All these show you to people. You never know who is reading. You never know who is the person who will one day reach out to you with an offer even before they publicly advertise it.
If I can help you with your profile on Linkedin or with your resume, let me know.
🎯 3 - Public Speaking
Do not think only about large crowds you speak in front of! Even speaking in front of one person is a challenge for many people and the job interview is such an instance.
Train your EQ related to speaking about yourself. Train and polish your discourse when asked about your strengths and weaknesses because yes, this is about you, about how you see and present yourself.
Check your posture when you speak standing. Do the same when you speak sitting. Check the words you use when introducing yourself. Are they powerful or on the contrary? Check your ability to shut up when silence makes a difference. Do you know the 90 seconds rule?
Ask me about it.
🎯4 - Networking
Be it online or offline, meet new people. To network is not however to sell.
Just put your energy in getting to know a new person. As I said, be it online or in person. Have the courage to go to a new person and get yourself introduced. You need to make the first step now more than ever. Do not wait to get contacted! Contact people!
Just ask the new person if you can be of any help to them. This is not about you, it is about them! let them speak, write etc to you. In networking the winner is the listener, not the speaker. This is how you find out there challenges and needs and this is how you prepare your next move by putting your new contacts in touch with somebody or something they needed. Next time he has a job to offer or hears about a new job opportunity, guess who they will think about? You!
Use your time wisely and prepare! Reach out to people these days and practice all of the above. Let me know how they worked for you! ✍✍✍
