How does practicing mindfulness affect productivity at work?
Building Focus
Have you ever noticed that when you are trying to read, you find yourself unable to focus which means that you read the same sentence or paragraph repeatedly?
This generally and most often happens when your mind is cluttered with other thoughts, distractions that you are experiencing.
Being mindful helps in building that awareness of the present that is needed to make you more focused on the task at hand, this includes reading or working on that presentation.
Absorption
You cannot possibly expect to fill a glass full of water with more water, in order to do that, you will first need to empty the glass. It is the same with the mind, if the mind is full of thoughts and processes, anxieties and stress, the possibility of learning and/ or absorbing any further information is next to impossible.
With the practice of focused awareness and being in the present, we train our minds to be open to information flow because we don’t allow thoughts and ideas to sit and grow moss. A thought occurs, is engaged with, addressed and then let go of.
So the next time there is a meeting, you might just find yourself more engaged than you ever have been.
Openness to learning
2020 has brought multiple challenges, one of the clear KRAs in the corporate sector is the ability to adapt to the changing situation. the more open we are to learning and exposing ourself to different ways of doing things, the more confidence we build in ourselves. We learn to expand our minds and the increase the possibilities of our own capabilities.
We train our brains to listen to us instead of it being the other way around. Adaptability is the key aspect of the human race that has brought us from the stone ages to where we are today. Learning, growing and adapting is the change that is needed. And change is the only constant.
Problem Solving
The difference between leaders and followers is the capacity to solve problems. A follower is like the sheep who need “how-tos” and instructions on making things happen. A leader on the other hand is the kind of person who is consistently aware of the environment and of situations. They are able to learn and adapt quickly, making them the go-to person in the case of a crisis.
They are the problem solvers and that is simply because they are able to focus on the problems and possible solutions with a clear mind. Not everyone has the ability to stay calm and clear headed in the event of a crisis. This is also a form of Mindfulness, to be aware and able to keep a clear head in the face of adversity.
Alternative Thinking
The people we call the trail-blazers are the ones who are able to think out -of-the-box. They don’t consider only tried and tested methods, they are open to new ideas and new way of doing things. Every person in the business world we admire has a spark about them, whether its a new invention, a new idea, a new campaign. These are people who have the capability and mindset to think apart.
Mindfulness is simply the art and science of focusing on what we want to achieve in the present moment and having the awareness of what is going on around us. Engaging with the thought, idea or concept and focusing diligently to complete it.
The human mind is created with this capacity, but sometimes the distractions are too overwhelming for the brain to process and that is what interferes with positive change and evolution. An upset in any space of our lives, work, family, friends or even ourselves, can lead to an upset in all aspects because the mind is in a state of disarray or turmoil.
I would like to hear what you think about this and if you agree, do share your thoughts. Let us create some mindful conversations.
