Function and Value Engineering Based Contests for Academia on the Occasion of L D Miles Day 2017
Indian Value Engineering Society (INVEST) is celebrating L D Miles Day in academic institutes for the last couple of years. This year in continuation with that effort, we are celebrating L D Miles Day on 6th May 2017 at Bangalore Institute of Technology (BIT), Bengaluru, India. BIT came forward to host the event at their esteemed institute and organize several Value Engineering events with support from INVEST.
To make the day fun and learning focused six function based contests are announced by INVEST Southern Zonal Council (INVEST SZC). The entries will be evaluated by INVEST Members and the winning entries will be displayed at the venue of the event as well awarded with prizes and certificates by INVEST.
Based on the overwhelming response from some the academic Institutes collaborating with INVEST, this year INVEST SZC decided to make these contests open to all academic institutes and we are announcing here. All the entries for these contests need to be submitted with their academic Institute details through email to jagath@bit-bangalore.edu.in. All entries need to be submitted on or before 4th May 2017.
The six function based contests and their details are listed below.
1. VE Punch Lines
2. VE-Toon
3. FAST-o-Gram
4. Function Fiesta
5. Function Mockup
6. Function Photography
1. VE Punch Lines
The VE Punch Lines should be a phrase or a combination of words in the form of rhyme and should convey a message on any of the Value Engineering tools, methods and jargons.
Example:
Democracy is “For the people, By the People, Of the People”.
Value Methodology is “For Function, By Function, of Function”.
Contest Rules:
- VE Punch Lines should be of maximum 24 words and two lines only
- They should have rhyming and easy to remember like Cinema Punch dialogues
- Language for wording should be English
- Wording should be original and should not be copied from any sources
- Maximum of five punch lines can be submitted by each participant
2. VE-Toon
Create a simple and powerful Cartoon on any of the Value Engineering tools, methods, and jargon reflecting their uniqueness, utility and novelty.
Example:
Contest Rules:
- Cartoon should be the original creation and should not copied/modified from any of other literary, art, internet and publication sources.
- Cartoons should be black in color for both the art/sketch and wording
- Wording used should be minimal and maximum of 50 alphabets
- Language for wording should be English
- Cartoon Size should be 3-1/2 inches high x 5 inches long and have the straight line border all around
- Reflection of Humor and nativity is encouraged
- Participants can hand sketch or use any software tools to create the cartoons. But they need to be shared in soft copy (JPEG or TIFF or BMP or PDF format)
3. FAST-o-Gram
This contest is to mainly spread the importance and benefits of FAST Diagrams with students. Participants need to create an A3 Landscape Poster on Function Analysis System Technique (FAST).
Contest Rules:
Create a colorful and Powerful poster on FAST Diagram reflecting its uniqueness, supremacy novelty, importance and the benefits of using it.
- Poster should be the original creation and should not copied/modified from any of other literary, art, internet and publication sources.
- Poster should be in color with a title and wording
- Wording can be maximum of 40 words
- Language for wording should be English
- Poster should be of A3 Size, Landscape orientation with one inch margin all around
- Reflection of Humor and nativity is encouraged
- Participants can hand sketch or use any software tools to create the posters. But they need to be shared in soft copy (JPEG or TIFF or BMP or PDF format) only
4. Function Fiesta
Show case a Product of your choice and explain its functions to participants and create a Festival of Function around your booth using posters, charts, articles and fun events.
Contest Rules:
- Pick and Choose a simple product of your choice. Daily life articles like pen, utensils, handheld devices can be chosen
- List all the function to be fulfilled by that Product as Per the SAVE Value Methodology convention for defining the functions (verb + noun)
- If possible create a FAST Diagram using all the listed functions
- Create posters of the function list and FAST Diagram
- Setup a small booth with product and banners and explain the functions and the product features fulfilling those functions to visitors
5. Function Mockup
Build a Mockup of the product/solution to explain the functions to be fulfilled in that product/solution.
Example:
Contest Rules:
- Pick and choose a daily life problems like cleaning a ceiling fan, taking out the dough from wet grinder, overcoming the soiling of shirts by leaking ball point pen etc.
- List all the function to be fulfilled by that Product as Per the SAVE Value Methodology convention for defining the functions (verb + noun)
- If possible create a FAST Diagram using all the listed functions
- Create posters of the function list and FAST Diagram
- Build the Mockup of the proposed solution. The Mockup needs to have the features fulfilling the identified functions anybody viewing the product can easily identify those features and relate to their functions
6. Function Photography
Capture any real life moments to reflect the function behind that captured image. Add the function which is fulfilled in that image.
Example:
Contest Rules:
- Function Photograph should be a simple image taken by the participant
- All the photos taken should be original and should not be copied from any sources
- Photos should be clear and reflect the Function under focus and viewers should be recognizing the function without any difficulty
- Photos should avoid any personal Identity features as part of them like logos, Human face, Names, places
- The Function description should be ONLY TWO WORDS (Verb + Noun) and follow the SAVE International’s Function Definition Guidelines
- Language for wording should be English
- Maximum of five Function Photographs can be submitted by each participant
