From Idea to App: A Student's Guide to Planning and Developing a Mobile App
Have you ever wanted to build your own mobile app but don't know where to start? Look no further! In this post, we will go through the step-by-step process of planning and developing a mobile app as a student using Flutter and Strapi.
Flutter is an open-source mobile application development framework created by Google. It allows you to build natively compiled apps for mobile, web, and desktop from a single codebase. On the other hand, Strapi is an open-source headless content management system (CMS) that lets you manage and deliver your content to any platform.
By combining Flutter and Strapi, you can easily build a scalable and maintainable mobile app that integrates with a powerful back-end CMS. In this post, we will go through the steps of planning a Flutter app with Strapi, from ideation to deployment. So let's get started!
A mobile app development project typically consists of three main components:
Backend
The backend refers to the databases and server-side objects that support the app's functions. This is the part of the app that manages and stores data that is not visible to the end user.
API
The API (Application Programming Interface) is the communication channel between the app and the backend. It allows the app to access and retrieve data from the backend as needed.
Frontend
The mobile app front end is the part of the app that the user interacts with. It usually includes an interactive user interface and uses the API(s) and backend for data management.

These are the steps that I followed to plan and build a successful diary app using Flutter and Strapi. By following below process flow, you can create a scalable and maintainable mobile app that meets the needs of your target audience.
In this case study, we will explore the process of building a diary app with Flutter and Strapi. The app, called "My Diary" allows users to easily record their thoughts, emotions, and daily activities along with images then do the data analysis and help users to build better habits related to mental and physical health.
Step 1: Define the app idea and purpose
The first step in any project is to define the idea and purpose of the app. What problem does the app solve? Who is the target audience? How does the app differentiate itself from other similar apps?
It's important to have a clear vision of what you want to achieve with the app, as it will guide the rest of the planning process. You can use tools like customer personas, user stories, and user flows to better understand the needs and behaviors of your target audience.
What I did:
I identified a need for a MyDiary recipe app that allows users to easily record their thoughts, emotions, and daily activities. With that I decided to do the data analysis and help users to build better habits related to mental and physical health.
To better understand the needs and behaviors of our target audience, I conducted market research and created customer personas. We also defined the core features of the app, including a recommendation system, an activities collection, a statistics generator, and other KPI (Key Performance Indicator) tools.
Step 2: Sketch out the app features and layout
Now that you have a clear idea of what the app should do, it's time to sketch out the features and layout of the app. This step is crucial as it will help you define the scope of the project and identify any potential challenges.
Start by listing all the features that you want to include in the app. Consider both the core functionality of the app and any additional features that may be useful to the user. Then, sketch out the layout of the app, including the main screens, navigation, and user interactions.
What I did:
Next, I sketched out the layout and features of the app. I designed the main screens, including the home screen, note screen, activities list screen, and activity details screen. I also designed the navigation and user interactions.
Step 3: Set up the development environment
Before you start coding, you need to set up your development environment. This includes installing the necessary software and tools, such as Flutter, a code editor, and any dependencies required by the app.

Deployment:
As we all know, Free Heroku plans are no longer available, so to keep your apps running you will need to switch to paid dynos and data plans.
I used Render as an alternative free platform for Heroku.
Why ? They compare Render directly with Heroku.
Now your development environment is ready. Let's move to next step.
Step 4: Integrate with Strapi for the back-end
Once you have a solid understanding of Flutter, it's time to integrate with Strapi for the back-end. Strapi provides a powerful and flexible API that lets you manage and deliver your content to the app.
To get started, you need to set up a Strapi instance and create the necessary content types and fields. You can use the Strapi Admin Panel or the command-line interface to do this. Then, you can use Flutter's HTTP libraries to make API calls to Strapi and retrieve the content for the app.

I deployed strapi back-end on Render Platform and achieved the goal.
Step 5: Develop and Iterate
Mobile app development is a dynamic and iterative process. One approach that is often used is the Agile Methodology, which involves dividing the project into smaller milestones and completing the app through a series of cycles. Each cycle typically includes four steps: Planning, Development, Testing, and Review. By following this approach, you can ensure that your app is constantly evolving and improving based on user feedback and changing requirements.
