Engineered to Be an Engineer — Or an Engineer to Be Engineered?
A Journey Through Chaos, Calm, and Coffee / Tea - A Chance Encounter Sparks a 17-Hour Reflection.
It was supposed to be a routine work trip—Shillong to Dimapur and back in less than a day. Seventeen hours on the road, with just five to spare in the city. Yet, as life often does, it handed me an unscripted chapter: on a bustling Dimapur street, I crossed paths with a colleague I hadn't seen in eight years. That brief encounter became more than a moment of nostalgia—it set off a cascade of memories, questions, and appreciation for the unpredictable journey that shapes every engineer.
Where the Real Engineering Began: Classroom Chaos
Looking back, it wasn’t formulas or structured lessons that defined my formative years in college. Instead, it was the chaos—the messy ingenuity of surviving and thriving in an ever-shifting environment.
• Attendance games: From creative proxy setups to last-ditch justifications, we learned teamwork not by assignment, but from the back benches.
• Canteen collaborations: Assignments were half-written over samosas, with classmates filling in the blanks. Labs had just enough ‘variation’ to pass as original.
• Dusty tomes and late-night walks: International textbooks checked out with sincere hope, soon gathering dust. Memory-making happened far from classrooms: muddy drives to Sharma’s café, chai at the gate, 2 AM hostel strolls for friendship, not insomnia.
Learning From Fails, Friendships, and Temple (Shiva)
Failure was a given. I flunked two subjects in my first year—never my proudest moment, but it was commonplace. We found reassurance in rituals—pre-exam searching for books, finding the schedule of exams, midnight cricket in hostel corridors, and negotiating for books: who gets it for how many hours, or you do this and I’ll do that and we’ll share. Even getting lab marks deducted for smiling was treated as a rite of passage.
From Campus Chaos to Real-World Calm
After nineteen years of professional life since those days, I see clearly: that chaos taught calm. The skills honed in moments of academic or social frenzy now help me resolve conflicts between stakeholders, learn on the fly from seasoned workers, and pitch solutions under pressure. The core lesson? Engineering isn’t just about machines; it’s about people—the art of social engineering.
Engineered to Be an Engineer… Or Being Engineered?
I still wonder: Are we engineered to become engineers, or are we constantly engineered by our experiences? Every project, every wobble or win, subtly redefines us. The job description may read “problem solver,” but in reality, it’s the journey—and not just the destination—that forges identity.
The Lifelong Club: Uniting Through Chaos
Whether mechanical, civil, electrical or beyond, what unites all engineers is the shared rite of passage: impossible assignments, tough vivas, group projects that test patience, and tapri chai that cements friendships. The struggles are real; so are the breakthroughs.
Reflections for the Road—and for Engineers Everywhere
• Chaos is a crucible: It disciplines, trains, and elevates, not just distracts.
• Engineering is empathy: It’s about seeing problems deeply, and mustering creativity and courage to solve them.
• Lessons aren’t just in the classroom: Proxy attendance taught delegation; hacked-together submissions taught innovation; late café nights taught connection.
• The degree gives the title. The journey gives the meaning.
As I approach two decades since those college gates, the nostalgia grows sharper. The accidental reunions on city streets become milestones—moments to reflect not just on careers, but on the ways we’ve changed. We’re reminded: to find calm in chaos, to embrace setbacks, and to keep engineering—not just systems and structures, but ourselves and our communities.
Here’s to the engineers shaped by upheaval and steadying each other, who keep crafting solutions with heart—and who know that, in the end, chaos is the perfect classroom for life’s greatest lessons.
