We the Engineers!
With each generation that comes and goes, we can easily observe the shift of the awe around certain professions. In fact, if we go back a few generations may we find this shift completing a full circle with the center stage rotating between being a pure entrepreneur to administrator to doctor and, in my generation, the Engineers.
Rather thankfully, I grew up in an age where engineering was a de facto choice for people who could not hold their dissection kits right. And so it was 4 years to a degree on the wall and a qualification to flaunt.
While I surely was a walking knowledge base for the subjects i ran across those years in college, But never till very recently did I truly feel like a true engineer. The realization of what truly engineering is was not from just those 4 years but rather by a habit I have realized and grown my fascination towards off late.
So what is engineering? Its not what the degree completely defines, else, completely unrelated to my stream, I would not be trying to design and develop machines which can more efficiently draw water from air. And for those who are not aware, yes such machines have existed for decades now.
It definitely is not just a simple application of the knowledge you may have gained till date- else during the first week at my B-school, and being an electronics and Telecommunications graduate, delivering an hour long talk on the Indian accounting standards (IAS) to a batch of sharp minds with alma mater of the top colleges in economics would not have resulted in applauds. This, when till two days from this talk did I not even know such standards even existed.
Engineering in its true sense is the way of approaching all problems, big or small. Its a habit of applying our mind to design a solution where none exist, and it is the conviction to walk the path needed to achieve the ultimate goal. It is some thing we all share.
Its the true sense of accomplishment in creation.
Yes, It is the religion of creation where pure joy is derived from seeing your creation work exactly how you visualized.
It is the art of problem solving. Possibly by breaking them down in smaller and smaller pieces and addressing these one after the other.
It is the state of mind where motivation is derived from a challenge, innovation is forced on the resources at hand and the sense of accomplishment is the ultimate drive to succeed.
If you ask me to certify, All Engineers are actually creators and all creators are true engineers.
And now, I have no second degree, yet I feel truly like an Engineer!
