The difference Between IoT and Enterprise IoT

IoT is the buzz word of the moment. Everyone include it into his/her speech (as used to happen with "IT", "Digital", "Big Data", etc...)

When watching at the industry, there is a mix of proposals and concepts that makes the things very complex for users or customers to differenciate among IoT and what some of us started to call EIoT (Enterprise IoT).

I don't want to make a 2 pages post to share my view in something that can be explainned in few lines. So let's go:

Most of the people talk about Internet of Things as if it were "one single concept". And actually it is, but it has several angles that must be taken in account.

In my point of view, it is very different an application done to control and manage your exercise or your light bulbs at home than a solution that will monitor your factory, connected to the ERP and CRM and managing your service people on the field. And the main difference is what is expected to get in return and the targets you would like to accomplish. And this is what historically diferenciated a "consumer application" from a "professional appplication".

Don't get me wrong: it is not about quality of the application. All of them MUST work properly. But Enterprise IoT is about complexity management, interoperability, ROI's, high SLA's, etc... Because it affects the core part of a company: its business model as well as its ability to create wealth and service its customers. And requirements are very different, starting on security and reliability. This is why I like to differenciate IoT in general from Enterprise IoT. Because it differeciates "Enterprise" solutions from "consumer" solutions. It differenciates professional environments from the rest. And it is not better. It is different.

Ese pequeño gran detalle que marca la diferencia. Buen matiz
