Dealing With a Busy Mind at Work
Ever since grade school, I had a hard time focusing on one thing at a time. I had a million things to think about: how long til recess, what snacks do I have, can I play Pokemon already, and the whole time struggling to pay enough attention to the teacher in case they call on me. I know this might sound like I have ADD, I like to think I just have a creative mind and I just get bored easy.
I know others share this struggle with me, and at the work place thinking so much can cause some troubles. Personally I was finding myself getting caught looking at Reddit or playing a game on the side. Although I was getting my work done, I was bored and I needed to be smarter by doing things that weren't going to get me fired. So I thought of some practices that I hope with help others as well.
1. Do your work- This one is obvious, but ultimately the most important. Make sure you get your work done. You'll never get looked at negatively for getting your work done everyday.
2. Resist the urge to Surf- I work on the computer all day, and I have to fight the urge to look up youtube videos, play a game, or do some online shopping. There is nothing more obvious then someone scrambling for the mouse and minimizing a page every time the manager walks around.
3. Write/Draw- This is my saving grace, since I've made a more conscious effort to write and draw more, I have noticed that my focus has been narrowing. I have a lesser need to do something that is wasting company time. Writing, like talking is a great way to get out of your head. It makes things more reasonable. I've had thoughts that seem to be the doom of everything, until I'm able to get them out and organized it's going to take up most of my time.
4. Great Creative- This might go hand and hand with the writing, but people whose minds wander a lot tend to be creative. So plan some something, think of a project to do, get the creative juices flowing. This can increase the serotonin levels in the brain leading to a happier and more productive work day.
I may be new to this whole office life, but i want to share what I learn. I'm no expert, but hopefully people in the same position as me will find it helpful seeing what someone similar is goring through. Last, share your thoughts what are some of the things you do to keep your mind occupied at work?
