Back To Basics

With film cameras (remember those?), most everybody knew not to open the film back before the film is rewound. A similar concept applies to digital cameras, even today! (And you still don’t want to open the back of film cameras before the film is rewound!)

Before you remove or insert a memory card from your camera, turn the camera off. This sounds simple and it is. Many cameras have an “access” light that shows when the camera is reading or writing to the card. You want to make sure that the light is off before you remove the card. Removing the card while the camera is accessing the card can possibly corrupt the card, rendering the entire card unreadable.

This is why I’ll recommend carrying extra cards later on in another post. Also, many cameras will shut off the instant you open the little door that covers the card. This can cause a loss of data if the camera is trying to write to the card.

Now that you know this, make sure little children and older adults! (Ha ha!) know this if you decide to let them use your camera.
