4 Ways to Create a Collaborative Workspace

Learning to work as a team to come up with the best ideas possible for your company is a true skill. Although many people work well with others, some people prefer brainstorming on their own. Whatever the case may be in your workplace, there are things you can do to encourage collaboration. That way, good ideas become great ideas because more people are contributing to the thought process.

Here are four ways to create a collaborative workspace:

1.   Lead by example. Be the type of person who encourages collaboration and feedback. Value your fellow employees by listening to their ideas and asking them to contribute to projects collectively as a team. Give credit where credit is due by sharing the best ideas with higher-ups and letting them know where the ideas came from. When you walk the walk and talk the talk, you inspire others to do the same. Your integrity could very well be what motivates other employees to do a better job of contributing in a group setting.

2.   Make things diverse. Set up areas for brainstorming throughout the workplace. Make sharing ideas come naturally. When people are comfortable in their setting, their best ideas come to life. They feel freer which means that they’re able to contribute more to the group when collaborating. When an impromptu brainstorming session can take place without disrupting the flow of the workday, magic happens. Take advantage of open areas in the workplace and make them group-friendly by adding couches and chairs to sit on.

3.   Create a corporate social network. Some people feel less restricted when they’re able to share their ideas by writing them out. That’s what makes a corporate social network platform valuable. If your company can make it happen, you may notice that people are sharing more regularly than they did before in a group setting. It’s easier for some men and women to articulate their ideas by writing them out than speaking them. Everyone has their own way of working. Encourage the best from everyone in your company by making it easier and more comfortable for them to connect and collaborate.

4.   Use video to connect. Bridge distance gaps by allowing workers in other time zones to be part of the collaborative process. Video is an easy way for people to get together, share ideas, and discuss action steps to make things happen. If you have flex workers or remote workers, they can add to the discussion easily through video connections. Discover which platform works best for your company and train everyone how to use it.

Creating a collaborative workspace isn’t hard and it benefits everyone involved. If you have the ability to get a group of people together to share ideas, it’s advisable. Doing so strengthens your team and helps innovative ideas come to fruition quicker. You’ll see the fruits of your labor transpire in a real and tangible way when your company acts on the ideas you’ve brought to them during a collaborative session.
