I think being a programming language expert currently holds the least value it's ever held in the history of software development. We've been on a declining core for a while and we're the lowest point right now. And honestly, I think it's going to keep dropping from here. Now, there are still a few exceptions to this. Very low level languages like C and C++ still demand deep expertise and hold some value because of the intricacies that come with working with them. Some of the newer languages might still require specialization for now, but even with those, I think it's going to start fading. Give it a year or two and the same shift. We're seeing with higher level languages is coming for them too. So why is this happening and what is being rewarded instead? If you guessed I, you'd be right. Pair programming. Coding agents like Cloud Code can write syntax correct well structured code faster than any one of us can if you give them the right context. Whether you like it or not, that's the reality we live in. Don't shoot the messenger, go try it yourself. Whether you spend 3 hours carefully crafting beautiful code line by line, or whether an AI generates it in minutes, the end result is what matters. Companies care about speed. Correctness, not who wrote the code. What's being rewarded now is being a domain or a problem space expert. You're much better off being someone with deep proven experience in data platforms, security, back end data, APIs, distributed systems, or even UI architecture as examples. This is what has always been rewarded as you progress in your career. The concept of being a T shaped engineer. Decent at many things but exceptionally brilliant in a specific domain. But it's more pronounced noun than ever. Companies are actively indexing on finding the right fit. Or the problem space they're hiring for. Not just someone who knows the language and the job description. As an experienced software engineer, I can tell you what no AI-hype LinkedIn account will: You can vibe-code your way to production, but you won’t be able to handle a 3 AM incident. The story changes completely if you actually write code as a professional.
