At first, we might think of using a Map and a loop. It ensures: - Mutual Exclusion (Only one thread at a time) - Visibility of changes - Thread Safety 🔹 Why Do We Need synchronized? In multithreading, multiple threads may try to access or modify the same object. Example problem: class Counter { int count = 0; public void increment() { count++; } } If two threads call increment() simultaneously, the result may be incorrect. Because count++ is NOT atomic. 🔹 Solution Using synchronized class Counter { int count = 0; public synchronized void increment() { count++; } } Now: - Only one thread can execute increment() at a time - Other threads must wait 🔹 How Does It Work Internally? Every object in Java has a monitor lock. Understanding == vs .equals() in Java 🔍 As I start sharing on LinkedIn, I thought I'd kick things off with a fundamental Java concept that often trips up developers: the difference between == and .equals() **The == Operator:** → Compares memory addresses (reference equality) → Checks if two references point to the exact same object → Works for primitives by comparing actual values **The .equals() Method:** → Compares the actual content of objects → Can be overridden to define custom equality logic → Default implementation in Object class uses == (unless overridden) Here's a practical example: String str1 = new String("Java"); String str2 = new String("Java"); str1 == str2 → false (different objects in memory) str1.equals(str2) → true (same content) **Key Takeaway:** Use == for primitives and reference comparison. Use .equals() when you need to compare the actual content of objects. Java lambda expressions, introduced in Java 8, allow developers to write concise, functional-style code by representing anonymous functions. They enable passing code as parameters or assigning it to variables, resulting in cleaner and more readable programs. A lambda expression is a short way to write anonymous functions (functions without a name). It helps make code more concise and readable, especially when working with collections and functional interfaces. Lambda expressions implement a functional interface (An interface with only one abstract function) Enable passing code as data (method arguments). Lambda expressions can access only final or effectively final variables from the enclosing scope. Lambdas cannot throw checked exceptions unless the functional interface declares them. Allow defining behavior without creating separate classes. 🔹Why Use Lambda Expressions: ✔Reduced Boilerplate: You no longer need to write verbose anonymous inner classes. ✔Functional Programming: Enables the use of the Stream API for operations like filter, map, and reduce. ✔Readability: Makes the intent of the code much clearer by focusing on "what" to do rather than "how" to define the structure. ✔Parallelism: Simplifies writing code that can run across multiple CPU cores via parallel streams. 🔹Functional interface A functional interface has exactly one abstract method. Lambda expressions provide its implementation. @FunctionalInterface annotation is optional but recommended to enforce this rule at compile time.Lambdas implement interfaces with exactly one abstract method, annotated by @FunctionalInterface. Common built-ins include Runnable (no params), Predicate<T> (test condition), and Function<T,R> (transform input). Java Compiled Or Interpreted. Is Java a compiled or interpreted language? The standard picture of Java is of a language that’s compiled into .class files before being run on a JVM. Lot of developers can also explain that bytecode starts off by being interpreted by the JVM but will undergo just-in-time (JIT) compilation at some later point. Here, however, many people’s understanding breaks down into a somewhat hazy conception of bytecode as basically being machine code for an imaginary or simplified CPU. In fact, JVM bytecode is more like a halfway house between human-readable source and machine code. In the technical terms of compiler theory, bytecode is really a form of intermediate language (IL) rather than actual machine code. This means that the process of turning Java source into bytecode isn’t really compilation in the sense that a C++ or a Go programmer would understand it, And javac isn’t a compiler in the same sense as gcc is — it’s really a class file generator for Java source code. The real compiler in the Java ecosystem is the JIT compiler. Some people describe the Java system as “dynamically compiled.” This emphasizes that the compilation that matters is the JIT compilation at runtime, not the creation of the class file during the build process. 💡 Java Tip: Using getOrDefault() in Maps When working with Maps in Java, we often need to handle cases where a key might not exist. Instead of writing extra conditions, Java provides a simple and clean method: getOrDefault(). 📌 What does it do? getOrDefault(key, defaultValue) returns the value for the given key if it exists. Otherwise, it returns the default value you provide. ✅ Example: Map<String, Integer> map = new HashMap<>(); map.put("apple", 10); map.put("banana", 20); System.out.println(map.getOrDefault("apple", 0)); // Output: 10 System.out.println(map.getOrDefault("grapes", 0)); // Output: 0 🔎 Why use it? • Avoids null checks • Makes code shorter and cleaner • Very useful for frequency counting problems 📊 Common Use Case – Counting frequency map.put(num, map.getOrDefault(num, 0) + 1); This small method can make your code more readable and efficient. Deep Dive into Core Java Concepts 🚀 Today, I explored some important Java concepts including toString(), static members, and method behavior in inheritance. 🔹 The toString() method (from Object class) is used to represent an object in a readable format. By default, it returns "ClassName@hashcode", but by overriding it, we can display meaningful information. 🔹 Understanding static in Java: ✔️ Static variables and methods are inherited ❌ Static methods cannot be overridden ✔️ Static methods can be hidden (method hiding) 🔹 What is Method Hiding? If a subclass defines a static method with the same name and parameters as the parent class, it is called method hiding, not overriding. 🔹 Key Difference: ➡️ Overriding → applies to instance methods (runtime polymorphism) ➡️ Method Hiding → applies to static methods (compile-time behavior) 🔹 Also revised execution flow: ➡️ Static blocks (Parent → Child) ➡️ Instance blocks (Parent → Child) ➡️ Constructors (Parent → Child) This learning helped me clearly understand how Java handles inheritance, memory, and method behavior internally. 🔹 What Does static Mean in Java? In Java, the static keyword means the member belongs to the class, not to the objects of the class. 👉 Static members are loaded into memory only once when the class is loaded. 👉 They are shared among all objects of that class. 🔹 Static Members of a Class A class can contain: ✔ Static Variables ✔ Static Methods ✔ Static Blocks These belong to the class memory (Method Area). Whereas: ❌ Instance variables ❌ Instance methods Belong to the object (heap memory). 🔹 Why Static is Important? 1️⃣ Memory Efficiency Since static members are created only once, they save memory when multiple objects are created. 2️⃣ No Object Required Static methods can be called directly using the class name: 🔹 Rules of Static (Very Important) ✅ Static methods CAN access: Static variables Static methods ❌ Static methods CANNOT directly access: Instance variables Instance methods ❌ Static methods CANNOT use: this keyword super keyword Why?
