    When we develop ontologies, we’re carefully crafting taxonomies, relationships and hierarchies. This is knowledge engineering. But at a deeper level, as we start to blend ontologies into AI, we’re also doing something mathematically elegant: we’re projecting high-dimensional data into a lower-dimensional conceptual space, much like dimensionality-reduction techniques in linear algebra. We’re factorising data. 🔵 What Do I Mean by Factorisation? In linear algebra or machine learning, factorisation is the process of breaking down a complex system into a set of simpler, lower-dimensional components. It’s how we go from messy, high-dimensional data to something more structured and usable - for instance, latent features in a matrix factorisation model. Ontology achieves a similar compression, but through abstraction and discretisation rather than algebraic multiplication. The first step is deciding what matters. What are the meaningful concepts we care about? What should we be paying attention to? This act of naming - of defining ontological classes - is not just descriptive. It’s selective. It’s a cognitive filter. Once you’ve made those choices, you’re effectively projecting the chaotic surface of your data onto a smaller, more meaningful subspace - a conceptual lens. This is your factorised view of the world. 🔵 Ontological Classes as Features Let’s say you’re working in tax law, healthcare, or finance. The raw data is sprawling - case notes, transaction logs, guidance manuals, APIs, spreadsheets. But once you define your ontological classes - Travel Expense, Employee, Business Purpose, or Diagnosis - you begin to compress that data into a smaller set of dimensions. These aren’t just labels. They’re axes of interpretation. Your AI models now have something to hook into. Your data pipelines know what to extract, link, store and serve. You’ve constrained the entropy of your system, not by discarding information, but by organising it around meaning. 🔵 Why This Matters for AI LLMs are famously good at handling unstructured data. But their real potential shines when they’re coupled with structure, especially when that structure reflects your domain’s core distinctions. A well-designed ontology acts as a kind of “feature engineering” for knowledge-centric AI. You’ve defined priors for your latent variables. You’ve chosen which concepts should anchor your interpretation, and you’ve factorised your data accordingly. The result? Faster iteration, more explainable results, and a far more coherent internal representation of your domain. 🔵 The Takeaway Ontology isn’t just a documentation exercise or a knowledge management tool. It’s a strategic, high-leverage move in the data pipeline. When done well, it’s a way of compressing meaning, factorising chaos, and bringing clarity to your AI efforts. If you’re serious about data-driven systems - especially those that aim to be intelligent - then ontology is not optional. It’s your starting point.

Here’s how to apply this to communicating technical ideas effectively: 1️⃣ Use Analogies They Understand Technical concepts often feel abstract. Analogies help bridge the gap. For example: "The cloud is like renting a storage unit. You don’t need to own the building or worry about maintaining it, but you can store your things there and access them whenever you need." 2️⃣ Avoid Jargon—Use Everyday Language Too much technical language alienates your audience. Simplify without oversimplifying. "Instead of saying 'We need to refactor the codebase to ensure scalability,' say: 'We’re making sure the software can handle more customers as we grow.'" 3️⃣ Focus on Why It Matters, Not How It Works Stakeholders care about the results, not the technical journey. "We’re implementing this new security feature to make sure your customer data stays protected, which ultimately builds trust and reduces risk." 4️⃣ Use Visuals to Break Things Down Visual aids make complexity easier to handle. A simple flowchart, for instance, can illustrate how a data pipeline works far better than words alone. 5️⃣ Relate it to Their Goals Connect technical efforts to business outcomes. "We’re upgrading the database infrastructure so you can access customer insights faster. This will help improve decision-making and speed up time-to-market for new features." This approach taught me more than any traditional technical communication strategy. Master these techniques, and you’ll become the go-to person who simplifies complexity and inspires action 🚀

    5 Chunking Strategies for RAG That Changed My Approach Over the last few months, I've been hands-on with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) in various projects, from enterprise applications to prototyping AI agents. One thing I’ve learned the hard way? The way you chunk data is absolutely critical. Here’s what worked for me: 1. Fixed-Size Chunking → What it is: Cutting data into equal parts. → Why it works: It’s simple and efficient but often leaves you with chunks that lack context, especially for complex information. Best for content with a predictable structure. 2. Semantic Chunking → What it is: Grouping content by meaning using cosine similarity. → Why it works: I applied this method in a vector store setup, and the improvement in relevance and accuracy of results was evident. 3. Recursive Chunking → What it is: A fallback method—keep breaking content down until the chunk size fits. → Why it works: Great when the document structure is all over the place. It’s a lifesaver when you can’t predict the length of the chunks needed. 4. Document Structure-Based Chunking → What it is: Using natural document sections like titles, intros, conclusions for chunking. → Why it works: Perfect for formal documents like reports or whitepapers. This structure is inherent to the document, making the chunks more meaningful. 5. LLM-Based Chunking → What it is: Let the LLM figure out the chunks based on context. → Why it works: My recent favorite. You feed the model the entire document, and it decides the optimal chunks based on context. Surprisingly effective when done right. In my experience, using a mix of these chunking methods in production-level RAG agents has made a massive difference in the quality of responses. The results?     Think chunking is just "split text every 500 tokens"? That's why your RAG system can't find relevant information. It’s time to level up your chunking game 😎 Most developers jump straight to fancy retrieval techniques, but it’s really your chunking strategy that can make or break your RAG performance. So let's break them down from simple to advanced: 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀: 1️⃣ 𝗙𝗶𝘅𝗲𝗱-𝗦𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: Split text into predetermined token/character counts. Super simple to implement but can cut sentences mid-way. Great for prototyping when you need a baseline fast. Would recommend not using in production. 2️⃣ 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: Uses prioritized separators (paragraphs → sentences → words) and adapts to document structure. 3️⃣ 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: Leverages format-specific elements like Markdown headers or HTML tags. Great when you have structured documents with clear logical separations. This is usually my default because it respects natural text organization while not being too complex. 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀: 4️⃣ 𝗦𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: Breaks text at meaning boundaries by analyzing sentence embeddings to detect topic changes. Ideal for dense academic papers where semantic boundaries don't align with document structure. 5️⃣ 𝗟𝗟𝗠-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: Uses an LLM to identify propositions and create semantically coherent chunks. Most powerful but also most expensive - a good choice for high-value documents where retrieval quality is absolutely essential. 6️⃣ 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: An AI agent dynamically decides which chunking strategy to use based on document characteristics. The right approach when you need custom strategies tailored to each document. 7️⃣ 𝗟𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴: Embeds the entire document first, then derives chunk embeddings while preserving full document context. Is a popular technique for technical documents where chunks reference other parts of the document. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 is that your chunks need to be small enough for precise vector search while giving the LLM enough context to generate useful answers, while also not being tooo much context that you overload the content window. 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸: • Prototyping → Fixed-size • Structured docs → Document-based • Dense academic content → Semantic • High-stakes systems → LLM-based or Agentic I would always recommend starting simple and evolving.     Behind every complex dataset lies structure we can’t see directly. People differ in patterns, not just averages. Behaviors co-vary for reasons that aren’t obvious. Latent modeling helps uncover these hidden structures. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) takes many correlated variables and transforms them into fewer uncorrelated components that retain most of the original variance. Each component is a linear combination of the initial variables, capturing how they vary together. PCA simplifies data, reduces noise, and helps visualize multidimensional relationships. It relies on eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the correlation matrix and is data-driven; it describes structure without inferring causes. Factor Analysis (FA) goes further by assuming correlations among variables stem from hidden factors such as traits or abilities. Each observed measure reflects both common factors and unique variance. Exploratory FA searches for these latent dimensions, while Confirmatory FA tests whether a proposed model fits new data. FA accounts for measurement error and aims to reveal theoretical constructs rather than just summarize data. Estimation involves solving for factor loadings and variances through maximum likelihood or least squares and assessing how well the structure explains observed relationships. Latent Class Analysis (LCA) shifts focus from variables to people. It applies to categorical data such as survey responses or ratings and assumes the population contains unobserved subgroups defined by similar response patterns. Each person’s answers are explained by their membership in a latent class, and the model estimates both class sizes and membership probabilities. LCA reveals population heterogeneity, showing that similar averages can hide very different subgroups. Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) extends this idea to continuous data. It assumes individuals belong to profiles characterized by distinct response patterns; one group may show high scores, another moderate, another low. These profiles can be interpreted as types within a population. Like LCA, LPA is a finite mixture model estimated using algorithms such as Expectation - Maximization. Criteria like AIC, BIC, and entropy guide how many profiles best fit the data. LPA exposes structured diversity without forcing arbitrary cutoffs. Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) applies the same principle to text. It models each document as a mixture of topics and each topic as a distribution of words. A document might contain several topics in varying proportions, revealing recurring themes across a corpus. LDA uses Bayesian inference through variational methods or Gibbs sampling to estimate these distributions. It supports large-scale qualitative analysis, identifying emergent ideas and linguistic patterns without manual coding. Topics are probabilistic, adapting as new data appear.
