Employees feel disconnected from their work. Leaders feel like they’re pushing a boulder uphill. Entrepreneurs start building something that doesn’t feel like theirs anymore. I’ve seen the same pattern across tech, finance, non-profits, and early-stage founders. People aren’t losing motivation. They’re losing the connection between who they are and what they do. When your work stops matching your identity, performance drops. Not because you’re unskilled, but because the direction is wrong. After my last post about aligning purpose with wealth creation, I received a flood of messages asking: - “How do I actually do this?” - “What does alignment look like in real life?” - “Where do I even begin?” Here’s one of the tools I teach leaders, teams, and professionals at every level. It’s simple, quick, and surprisingly revealing. The Alignment Audit Ask yourself three questions: 1. Does the work I do reflect the person I want to become? 2. Do my goals leave me energised or drained? 3. Am I moving toward something meaningful or just away from discomfort? Honest answers to these bring clarity instantly. Energy returns. Unlike goals (which are finite), values represent ongoing directions you want to move toward throughout life. I've seen this firsthand working with the Toronto Raptors - athletes who connected their daily training to deeper values consistently outperformed those motivated primarily by external rewards like contracts or fame. Here's why value alignment matters: When facing difficult choices under pressure, values provide a reliable framework for making decisions you won't regret. Research shows value-based decision-making engages specific regions of the prefrontal cortex connected to long-term planning and emotional regulation. Values also provide psychological suspension during setbacks - they absorb the impact of failure. Studies with injured athletes and professionals facing career challenges show values-clarity is one of the strongest predictors of resilience. Unlike motivation fueled by external rewards or fear, values-based motivation doesn't deplete your energy - it replenishes it. Psychologists call this "concordance" - when actions align with your authentic self, you experience less internal conflict and greater vitality. In team environments, shared values create powerful alignment. Teams with aligned values outperform teams with similar talent but divergent values. They coordinate more effectively and adapt to challenges more cohesively. Perhaps most importantly, values alignment contributes significantly to "eudaimonic well-being" - a sense of meaning and purpose that transcends momentary happiness. Multiple studies show people who consistently align actions with values report greater life satisfaction and better physical health outcomes. To strengthen your values-action connection: - Conduct a values audit to identify discrepancies causing internal friction. - Practice values-based reflection before making significant decisions. - Structure your environment and social connections to support your values. The next time you face a difficult choice or find your motivation waning, ask yourself: "What matters most to me, and how can my next action reflect that?" Your answer will guide you toward both greater performance and deeper fulfillment.

Strategy isn’t a slide. It’s a fight worth having. I’ve been quiet here for a day because I just came out of two intense, energizing sessions with our extended strategy team. And I’m still fired up. 💥 We pushed each other hard. We challenged assumptions. We laughed a lot. And we left with crystal-clear alignment and a shared determination to think bigger, move faster, and win as one team. Our focus: ✅ Think Big, Go Fast Not in months and quarters. In days and weeks. ✅ Win Every Key Moment in the Customer Journey Especially the ones that define value and long-term loyalty. ✅ Win as One Team Not your team, not my team. Our team. Rooted in shared goals, not personal preferences. For some reason, I usually get to help moderate these sessions. That’s no small task with 25 to 30 strong leaders in the room from every department. But it gives me a front-row seat into how we build alignment that lasts. Here’s what works for us and might work for you: 1️⃣ Be clear up front Why are we meeting? What are the most important objectives? And how exactly are we going to win together? Set the tone early. Remove ambiguity. Drive purpose. 2️⃣ Bring the voice of the customer into the room 🎤 The most substantial alignment starts with empathy and clarity around what matters most to our customers. When we anchor the conversation in value needed and delivered, priorities become clearer and conflict becomes productive. Customer insights create unity. 3️⃣ Make cross-functional ownership real 🤝 Everyone says “we’re one team.” But real alignment means we walk out with shared KPIs, not siloed tasks. Product, Sales, CS, Ops, we all succeed only when we move together. 💬 So here's my call to action for you today: If you’re leading in CS, CX, Product, or Revenue, and you’re halfway through Q3, ask yourself: Are you chasing alignment? How do you communicate purpose effectively and turn it into action? The answer lies in the Pyramid of Purpose. The Pyramid of Purpose is a powerful tool for aligning your organization's strategy. It lays out a clear hierarchy of questions, guiding you from the abstract "why" to the concrete "who." Why it matters: → Clarity: It ensures everyone understands the organization's core purpose and direction. → Alignment: It helps teams focus their efforts on shared goals and objectives. → Actionable: It translates purpose into concrete steps and responsibilities. The 5W+1H Framework: The Pyramid uses the 5W+1H questions to structure strategic planning: ✅ WHY? This is the foundation. It defines the organization's overall purpose and reason for existence. ✅ WHERE? This specifies the scope and location of the purpose. For which market, industry, or region does the "why" apply? ✅ WHAT? This translates the purpose into clear, measurable goals and objectives. What are we trying to achieve? ✅ HOW? This outlines the actions, initiatives, and projects needed to reach the goals. What needs to be done? ✅ WHEN? This sets priorities and timelines for achieving the objectives. When will things happen? ✅ WHO? This assigns ownership and responsibility for executing the plan. Who will do what? Building your Pyramid: 1/ Start with the "why." What is the organization's core purpose and mission? 2/ Define the "where." Who are you trying to reach and where do you operate? 3/ Set clear "what" goals. Translate the purpose into measurable objectives. 4/ Develop the "how" to achieve them. What actions and initiatives are needed? 5/ Set priorities and timelines ("when"). Create a roadmap for execution. 6/ Assign clear ownership and responsibility ("who"). Who will make it happen? The Pyramid of Purpose is a continuous process. The Art of Getting Alignment Is the First Step to Product Success Getting alignment is one of the most critical (and misunderstood) skills in product management. It’s not about having everyone agree on everything—it’s about ensuring everyone moves in the same direction with clarity and conviction. In my experience, lack of alignment is often the first failure for products. Misalignment leads to unclear priorities, wasted resources, and confusion among teams. But when alignment is strong, teams build momentum, solve the right problems, and deliver impactful products. After 15 years in product management, I’ve developed a kind of sixth sense for knowing whether people are truly aligned or not. It’s in their body language, their questions, or even the things they don’t say. For product managers, developing this skill is essential—not just to identify misalignment, but to proactively address it. In parallele of developing this 6th sense, here are some of the frameworks I’ve found invaluable in creating alignment: 1️⃣ Jobs to Be Done: This helps focus teams on the customer’s actual needs and desired outcomes rather than assumptions. 2️⃣ User Stories: A simple way to tie everyone’s work back to the user’s goals and keep discussions grounded in their perspective. 3️⃣ The “What It Is Not” Framework: Explicitly defining what a product isn’t prevents misunderstandings and scope creep. 4️⃣ Mock-Ups: Seeing a tangible representation of the product often resolves abstract debates and brings clarity to the team. Aligning my goals these past 15 years allowed me to rebuild back to 9 figures. Here's exactly how I was able to do this: People think alignment is about sitting on a meditation cushion for hours. The truth is, alignment is a systematic process that removes friction from everything you touch. When you're not aligned, your thoughts pull one direction, your actions another, and your goals somewhere else. This creates resistance. After bankruptcy, I discovered alignment works like a river flowing downstream. When you align your energy, relationships, and actions, you achieve more with less effort. Here are 4 signals that tell you if you're aligned: Peace = aligned | Stress = fighting current Ease = flowing | Frustration = wasted energy When stress or frustration hits, ego is usually running the show. Alignment multiplies through four relationships that feed each other: Self → Family → Business → Community A break in alignment in one will break all four. Here are 4 tools that create alignment: 1. Stop, Drop, Roll for emotional regulation • Stop your immediate reaction. • Drop into breathing and perspective. • Roll back to your purpose. This stops you from making rash decisions that get in the way of your progress. 2. Cancel, Clear, Connect for mental clarity • Notice negative thought → Say "cancel" • Clear mind → Focus only on the things that serve you • Connect → Return to your values I use this at least 10 times a day. 3. Daily gratitude practice Gratitude shifts your energy from scarcity to abundance thinking. Going from feeling pain and sorrow when you lose to looking for the lessons and realizing there's an opportunity to come back stronger in whatever you've just failed at. 5 minutes every morning will change your entire frequency. 4. Accountability questions Instead of "Why is this happening to me?" Ask "What am I supposed to learn?" and "How can I serve?" This turns every setback into forward momentum. • Trust builds on trust. • Service accelerates results. • Alignment expands influence naturally. When your relationships flow together, you tap into forces bigger than yourself. Most people compartmentalize these areas and create friction. When you align all four, you remove resistance and everything flows.
