Dear freelancers, This year, I need you to run your strictest programme yet. No more “let’s just see how it goes” energy. We’re moving like strict businesses. okurrr. Start here: 1/ Have contracts in place. Every time. 2/ Set communication hours. You’re not a 24/7 helpline. 3/ Stick to your T&Cs. Boundaries are part of the service. 4/ Take deposits. Your calendar is not a free holding space. 5/ If a potential client is giving you the runaround, run away. 6/ Get clear on the scope before you start. “Can you just…” will finish you. 7/ Don’t undercharge yourself just to “secure the bag.” Cheap clients are rarely low stress. BUT. By doing all this, you also need to make sure your service is matching the standards you’re setting. Professionalism isn’t one-sided. So also: ✨ Deliver on time. Or communicate early. ✨ Make the process smooth, not stressful. ✨ Overcommunicate progress so clients feel secure. ✨ Take pride in the details; quality is your reputation. ✨ Leave clients feeling like they made the right investment. This isn’t just about helping yourself. It helps the whole freelance community. When you undercharge, overdeliver for free, ignore contracts, or move messy, it lowers the standard for everyone else trying to run a serious business. We can be kind. We can be flexible. But we cannot be unserious. Yours sincerely, A seasoned freelancer

Getting success in career and life is important but not at the cost of health! We software engineers, working professionals spend so much time in front of our desktop. Little habits for long-term success: 🔸 Eye health: I follow the 20-20-20 rule (looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes) to reduce eye strain and maintain good vision. 🔸 Mental well-being: Regular exercise, proper sleep, and stress management techniques can help reduce the risk of burnout. 🔸 Posture and ergonomics: Setting up an ergonomic workspace, using an adjustable chair and desk, and maintaining proper posture can help prevent these problems & improve comfort. 🔸 Hydration discipline: Keep a bottle at your desk and make it a habit to drink water every hour — helps with energy, focus, and digestion. 🔸 Microbreaks: Stand up, stretch, or take a 2-minute walk every hour to recharge your body and avoid stiffness or fatigue. 🔸 Digital detox time: Allocate at least 30 minutes a day away from all screens — it boosts mental clarity and reduces digital fatigue. 🔸 Deep work boundaries: Block out 1–2 hours of focused, distraction-free work and protect that time — it improves productivity and reduces the need for overtime. 🔸 Mindful eating: Don’t eat at your desk while coding or replying to emails. Take a proper lunch break — it helps digestion and refreshes the mind. Remember, your health is your real wealth. Let’s build careers that don’t cost us our well-being. It’s time to advance the AI debate beyond binary, zero sum analyses and take lessons - and encouragement - from the emergence of a flexible, capable, AI-savvy workforce segment in real time: freelancers. A recent The New York Times article explores a growing question in the age of AI: Are junior roles most at risk of automation, or are experienced, high-paid employees more vulnerable, especially if they’re slow to adopt new tools? The answer has big implications for how companies build teams. On Upwork, we’re seeing an alternative future emerge: companies hiring at an increased clip — specifically expanding their hiring of AI-capable freelance talent to supplement existing FTE teams and turbocharge their business evolution for the AI era. Freelancers represent a growing segment of the labor force (already more than a third of US knowledge workers) — and are disproportionately AI-savvy. There were a quarter of a million of these AI expert freelancers earning on our platform in the last year alone - and they represent an important talent pool that is supplementing traditional employment with more flexible talent models. In sum: companies’ AI strategies are not simply trading off employees for AI — they are creating net new hiring opportunities that cater to a different, more flexible, and AI-educated population. These freelancers are using their AI expertise to help companies move faster and adapt smarter. According to our research, 88% of freelancers say AI has positively impacted their careers. They’re combining human expertise with AI tools to deliver value where it’s needed most. And business demand reflects this shift. In the first quarter of 2025, AI-related work on our platform grew 25% year over year, with growth not only in technical roles like AI development but also in non-technical areas like design, project management, and corporate law. These freelancers are not only in demand—they’re earning a premium for their skills. Our discourse needs to move beyond choosing between junior or senior talent or debating who’s most at risk. We are seeing the emergence of a more adaptive and resilient workforce in real time. Freelancers are modeling that future—AI-enabled, flexible, and built for what’s next. While I started flourishing in my career, I was mistreating my body in 2022. When I left my full-time job and started freelancing from home, I often rewarded myself with Zomato treats. While everyone talks about the advantages of remote work, very few acknowledge how it affects one's health. With the pandemic, I was unable to exercise & go out. I sat for long hours and consumed junk food from food delivery apps. It made me overweight, and upon tracking, I found that I ordered every alternate day from Zomato & was over spending. As a freelancer & agency owner, neglecting your health and diet is easy when you have to sit for extended periods. However, I realised I needed to make a change for my well-being. I started tracking my bills and incorporating mini workouts into my daily routine at home. This helped me control my junk food cravings and unnecessary spending on ordering in. 3 underrated ways I've been following for the past year to avoid overspending on food delivery and take care of my health: 1. Meal prep: I cook the healthier version of food that I crave during the week. For example: If I craved noodles, I would have millet noodles with overload veggies. 2. Hydration reminders: Staying hydrated limits mindless snacking. I set reminders to drink water regularly. I also drink a coconut water everyday. 3. Movement breaks When I can take a call while walking, I do. 4. Working out 3-4 times It’s been difficult to also include workout hours while setting up a new business & life. But, hey! I try. It is important that you don’t let your health take a backseat. You started a business for a better lifestyle. So, don’t trade one for the other. #Workout #Agencyowner #Marketing

I've been writing recently about the need for clear digital work environments and explicit agreements to make hybrid work successful. But these systems aren't just about coordinating employees across different locations—they're essential infrastructure for the rapidly growing freelance workforce that's reshaping how business gets done. The evidence is compelling: According to new research from Remote’s "State of Freelance Work 2025" report, 91% of companies have maintained or increased their use of freelancers over the past three years, with 52% explicitly expanding their freelance utilization. This isn't a temporary shift but a fundamental transformation of work relationships. The data shows engineering and IT leading freelance adoption (37%), followed by creative roles (34%), customer support (32%), and marketing (31%). What's driving workers toward freelancing? It's *not* primarily return-to-office mandates (only 6% cite this) but rather autonomy (41%), supplemental income needs (31%), and flexibility (28%). Interestingly, we're also seeing a "silver freelance" trend, with 45% of employers noting an increase in freelancers aged 55+ who bring valuable experience and mentorship capabilities. Yet despite these benefits, the administrative systems supporting this integration remain woefully inadequate—85% of freelancers report late payments, and nearly half of companies are managing these relationships through makeshift spreadsheets and disjointed processes. Which is a far cry from consistent ways of working and business rhythms. Read my article in Forbes to discover how leading organizations are building the digital infrastructure that supports both hybrid work and the fluid workforce of the future. https://lnkd.in/ep-vTuDp The investments you make today in streamlining these systems aren't just about current efficiency—they're about competitive advantage in attracting tomorrow's talent. #futureofwork #freelancers #workforce #hybridwork #enployeeexperience

Demand for freelance tech professionals is rising as firms scout niche skills, reports Rica Bhattacharyya for The Economic Times. Almost 75% of the 250 firms surveyed by Deloitte are considering hiring gig workers for their open positions in 2024 — an increase from 61% last year. Data from Flexing It also shows a 30% year-on-year spike in number of projects in the tech sector, adds the report. Along with global capability centres and the business process management (BPM) field, the rise of direct-to-consumer brands and e-commerce is also leading to a surge in freelancer demand. Data science, data modelling, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence/ machine learning are among the top skills firms are seeking. Jobs mentioning AI have more than doubled as firms bolster their generative AI capabilities, according to Karthik Sridharan, CEO of Flexiple. What's driving this trend? Firms are looking for financial benefits, seeking specialised skills, and tapping into a flexible talent pool that allows them to scale up or down depending on business requirements, said Vamsi Karavadi, Director-Human Capital Consulting at Deloitte. Moreover, concerns about risks and availability of qualified talent are reducing, he adds. During a period of uncertainty or for new business areas, freelancers help keep costs variable, according to Flexing it CEO Chandrika Pasricha. How will the tech freelancing landscape evolve in 2024? How I Preserve My Sanity as a Freelancer? Freelancing can be rewarding, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. Here are some strategies I use to maintain my mental peace: 🎯 Set Clear Boundaries Establish specific work hours and stick to them. This helps create a balance between your work and personal life. 🎯 Create a Dedicated Workspace Having a designated area for work helps mentally separate your professional life from your personal space, enhancing focus. 🎯 Take Regular Breaks Short, frequent breaks are key! They prevent burnout and keep your productivity levels high throughout the day. 🎯 Stay Organized Utilize tools and schedules to keep track of tasks, deadlines, and client communications. This reduces stress and confusion. 🎯 Communicate with Clients Set clear expectations with clients and manage deadlines effectively. Open communication fosters a smoother workflow. 🎯 Socialize Offline Make time for in-person interactions. They help counterbalance the isolation of remote work and nurture personal connections. 🎯 Plan Your Finances Wise financial management ensures a stable income, builds an emergency fund, and sets aside savings for the long term - contributing to your peace of mind. By prioritizing self-care and maintaining a healthy work-life balance, you can not only thrive as a service provider but also find mental peace. I thought I’d hit the jackpot. Three clients, ₹1 Crore income in my first year as a freelance developer. I was on cloud nine… until a ₹𝟰𝟬 𝗹𝗮𝗸𝗵 tax bill brought me crashing down. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐖𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐖𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠: 🚩 Mistake #1: I didn’t register a proprietorship or private limited company, missing out on GST benefits, tax rebates, and expense claims for my work. 🚩 Mistake #2: When my income crossed ₹1 crore, an additional tax rate kicked in, and my effective tax shot up to 37.5%. With indirect taxes, it totaled 50%! It was a hard, expensive lesson. But it taught me something every freelancer and entrepreneur should know: 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥. 💡 Looking back, if I’d known better, that ₹40 lakhs could have funded an extra year of building 𝐕𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐨. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐖𝐞 𝐃𝐨 𝐃𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲? For all my fellow freelancers and entrepreneurs out there, here’s my advice: 1. 𝐇𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭 - Get a tax advisor early on to guide you. 2. 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 - Understand the basics of tax laws and regulations. 3. 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐲 - Avail the tax benefits you’re entitled to. 4. 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 - This minimizes your tax liability. 5. 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 - Avoid last-minute surprises and manage your taxes smartly. Financial literacy doesn’t just save money—it gives your business the runway to grow. Don’t let ignorance drain your hard-earned income like it did mine. 👉 Comment “LEARN” below if you want to dive deeper into this topic. #freelancer #developer #founder #SmallBusinessTips

Building a wellness business without burning out starts with one key lesson: You can’t do it all. The secret is in routines, boundaries, and smart delegation. Here’s how I’ve learned to scale without sacrificing mental and physical health: 🔹 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 – Hydrate, meditate, and set the tone before diving into work. 🔹 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗪𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘆 – Carve out focused work periods and protect time for breaks. 🔹 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 & 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲 – You can’t (and shouldn’t) do everything. Trust your team. 🔹 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 – Daily movement keeps energy up and stress down. 🔹 𝗦𝗲𝘁 𝗕𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 – Know when to log off. Work will always be there tomorrow. Burnout affects 𝟳𝟳% of entrepreneurs—don’t let it be your story. Build a thriving business 𝘢𝘯𝘥 a healthy life. #scalingwellness

Your Side Hustle Needs a Financial Firewall. 🔥🧱 Are you blurring the line between your main income and your freelance checks? If you're mixing business expenses with your personal credit card, you're weakening your financial foundation. Clarity equals control. Separating your income streams is the fastest way to reduce tax stress and boost your lending credibility. The Actionable Strategy: Open a separate Checking Account just for your side hustle income and expenses. Get a dedicated Business Credit Card (or a separate personal card for only business use) to track expenses cleanly. Pay Yourself: Every month, transfer your 'profit' from the business account to your personal account. This clearly defines your taxable income and keeps your personal DTI clean. This simple firewall sharpens your focus, simplifies tax time, and makes your FICO score work harder for you when you need a major loan. Do you use a separate bank account for your side hustle? Yes or No? #FreelanceFinance #SideHustle #CreditScore #BusinessFinance #FinancialWellness
