    When you’re trying to make sense of complex user behaviors, traditional segmentation methods often fall short. Sure, K-means clustering can group users by surface-level similarities - how they navigate, what they click on, or which features they use - but it doesn’t tell you why those patterns exist. And in UX, understanding the why is everything. That’s why I’ve found Latent Class Analysis (LCA) to be an incredibly valuable tool in my research practice. It’s a method designed to find hidden patterns in survey data, especially when you’re working with categorical or ordinal questions - like multiple-choice items or Likert scale responses. LCA doesn’t just sort users based on what’s visible on the surface. Instead, it tries to uncover what’s driving their responses underneath. It assumes that users belong to hidden (or "latent") groups that we can't directly observe, but that we can detect based on how they answer questions. For example, imagine running a UX survey that asks people about their comfort with technology, trust in AI, and preference for customization. You might get a wide range of responses. LCA helps you go beyond analyzing each question separately - it figures out if there are groups of people who tend to answer similarly across all questions, even if they don’t seem obviously connected. These groups - called latent classes - might reflect different user mindsets, like “curious but cautious explorers” or “pragmatic minimalists.” Once you find those groups, you can design more targeted and meaningful experiences for each. What makes LCA especially useful is that it doesn’t force people into just one group. Instead of saying, “You belong to Cluster 1 and that’s it,” LCA assigns probabilities. So someone might be 80% likely to belong to one group and 20% to another. That reflects real life better. People are complex, and their motivations often overlap. It also solves one of the common headaches in clustering: how many segments should we have? LCA gives you tools to evaluate that using something called model fit statistics. It’s still partly a judgment call, but at least you’re making an informed decision rather than guessing. I’ve used LCA in projects where we needed to go beyond demographics and usage stats. For instance, when helping a client develop personas, we didn’t want to rely just on age or job title. By applying LCA to their survey responses, we could uncover psychological groupings - how users think, what they care about, and what they’re hesitant about. That gave the design and product teams something much more actionable than “target 25-34 year-old tech users.” LCA does require some statistical literacy and careful setup. You need to think critically about which survey questions to include in the model. Including questions that are too outcome-driven or irrelevant can bias the results. And interpreting the segments takes domain knowledge. But, it’s absolutely worth learning

    Every product loses users. Some people cancel subscriptions. Some stop opening the app. Some simply disappear. That’s called customer churn - when users leave your product. Most teams can see that users are leaving. But the real challenge is understanding why. Dashboards tell you who left. Good analysis tells you what went wrong. If you work in Data Analytics, Product, or Growth, finding the real reasons behind customer drop-off is one of the most valuable skills you can learn. Here’s a practical framework for Churn Analysis - 15 ways to find the real root causes 👇 1) Define churn clearly first Decide what “leaving” means for your product: canceled subscriptions, inactivity, no purchase in 60 days, or app uninstall. 2) Segment churn by customer type New users and loyal users leave for very different reasons. Always analyze them separately. 3) Check churn by acquisition channel Compare paid vs organic users to see if targeting or expectations are misaligned. 4) Analyze churn by cohort (signup week/month) Look for specific groups that dropped after a feature change, pricing update, or campaign. 5) Track churn by lifecycle stage Churn during onboarding is very different from churn after months of usage. 6) Find churn spikes over time Plot daily or weekly churn and match spikes to outages, bugs, or policy changes. 7) Measure usage drop before churn Most users slowly disengage before leaving. Track last active date and session trends. 8) Map feature adoption patterns Users who never use key features are much more likely to churn. 9) Build funnels to locate drop-offs Example: Signup → Setup → First Action → Repeat Usage → Subscription. 10) Compare high-churn vs low-churn segments Study what retained users do differently - then try to replicate that behavior. 11) Analyze churn by pricing plan or tier Sometimes users leave because the pricing doesn’t match their needs, not because the product is bad. 12) Study support tickets and complaint themes Group feedback around bugs, usability, slow response, onboarding confusion, or pricing. 13) Look at transaction failures and payment declines Some churn is accidental: card failures, renewal issues, or payment errors. 14) Run retention curves and survival analysis Identify exactly where retention drops sharply - that stage usually holds the root cause. 15) Validate with churn surveys or interviews Ask users why they left and use real feedback to confirm your assumptions. The key takeaway: Customer churn isn’t random. It leaves clues everywhere - in usage data, funnels, cohorts, pricing, support tickets, and payments. Great analysts don’t guess.     Are you segmenting users by who they are, or why they use your product? This week I had Nesrine Changuel, PhD on the Product Thinking podcast to discuss her new book, Product Delight. One insight completely shifted how I think about user segmentation. Most teams segment by demographics (age, company size) or behavior (usage patterns, feature adoption). But Nesrine argues the most impactful segmentation is motivational: understanding why users actually choose your product. As she puts it, "it's really important to list both the functional motivators and the emotional motivators so that we can create solutions that honor for both." Two enterprise customers might look identical demographically, but one uses your product to reduce manual work (efficiency-driven) while another wants complete visibility into every process (control-driven). Same demographic, completely different product needs. This connects to her three pillars of delight: removing friction, anticipating needs, and exceeding expectations. When you understand the emotional and functional "why" behind user behavior, you can build features that truly resonate. How are you currently segmenting your users?     While it can be easily believed that customers are the ultimate experts about their own needs, there are ways to gain insights and knowledge that customers may not be aware of or able to articulate directly. While customers are the ultimate source of truth about their needs, product managers can complement this knowledge by employing a combination of research, data analysis, and empathetic understanding to gain a more comprehensive understanding of customer needs and expectations. The goal is not to know more than customers but to use various tools and methods to gain insights that can lead to building better products and delivering exceptional user experiences. ➡️ User Research: Conducting thorough user research, such as interviews, surveys, and observational studies, can reveal underlying needs and pain points that customers may not have fully recognized or articulated.     People sometimes ask whether our system is a kind of multi-armed bandit. It’s not. But that’s not a bad place to start if you want a familiar reference point. Our semantic-associative agents use the same basic intuition: take actions, observe outcomes, and update preferences. But two key differences make this something else entirely: 1️⃣ Multi-dimensional action space. In a typical bandit problem, the agent chooses from a flat set of discrete actions—pull arm A, B, or C. Each action is assumed to be atomic and independent. Even when bandits are extended into contextual or combinatorial forms, they still often treat each action as a point in a single, unified decision space. Real-world decision-making—especially in applications like customer engagement—isn’t like that. You’re not just choosing “an action.” You’re selecting a profile made up of choices across several intersecting dimensions: time of day, day of week, message channel, content theme, offer type, incentive level, tone, subject line, etc. Each of these is its own action set, and the agent must learn how these dimensions interact—both with each other and with user behavior. The task isn’t just to find the best arm, but to learn a combinatorial space of micro-preferences and then select a coherent, deliverable action bundle that fits. 2️⃣ Non-ergodic learning. Most bandit systems assume some form of ergodicity—the idea that statistical insights gained from one user’s behavior can generalize to another. In an ergodic system, learning can be pooled: we assume that averages across time and averages across the population converge. That makes for efficient learning, especially when individual data is sparse. But user behavior in domains like messaging or content interaction is not ergodic. People differ—not just in preferences, but in responsiveness, habits, intent, timing, and attention. Treating these differences as noise and trying to learn a global average flattens signal that actually matters. Our agents treat each user as their own environment. They don’t generalize across users. They build up individualized models based solely on that user’s interaction history, which lets them preserve and act on genuine behavioral variance instead of averaging it away. So while it’s tempting to think of this as a fancy bandit setup, that framing misses what’s actually happening. It’s not a variant—it’s a structurally different approach. Bandits are a good metaphor to start with, but the differences are architectural, not cosmetic. And to be clear: none of this depends on LLMs. An LLM is just an actor—it takes context and produces plausible outputs. Our learning agents run upstream of that. They’re responsible for producing the right context in the first place, based on what they’ve learned about how a particular user responds to different combinations of actions. That context can then drive the LLM, or be used to select from a content library indexed to the same profile space.

    To me, UX is nothing but the psychology of people interacting with their environment, including products and services, studied across multiple levels, from individuals to groups. UX is not a toolset, role title, or a checklist of methods. It is a way of understanding human behavior in designed systems, unfolding over time and shaped by context, constraints, and social dynamics. That is why learning UX is not about mastering Figma, running a few usability tests, or memorizing heuristics. Those are execution skills. The foundation lives elsewhere. I believe, if you want to truly learn UX, these are the fields you need to study: 1️⃣ Cognitive psychology. This is the backbone of UX. Perception, attention, memory, mental models, decision-making, learning, and cognitive load explain why users behave the way they do and why many designs fail even when they look clean.
