    Tired of being the bottleneck? Speak like a leader who inspires. No one teaches us how to be great leaders. Most of us learn by observing those we’ve worked for. We pick up habits along the way - some helpful, others not so much. If we’re honest, we’ve all used phrases that unintentionally demotivate our teams. I know I have. The good news is that leadership is a skill, and like any skill, it can be refined. We can choose to intentionally use words that motivate and inspire, rather than try to control and criticise. It's a small shift, but it can have a big impact. It’s a big question—but the answer is surprisingly simple: It all starts with the conversations we have. Words are powerful. They can calm a storm or light a fire. I’ve seen it firsthand—how the right words, spoken at the right time, can transform a group of individuals into a team that achieves the extraordinary. If you want to forge an unbreakable team, here are the phrases you need to embrace. 1. “I trust you.” Trust is the foundation of every strong team. Saying, I trust you does more than delegate responsibility—it gives ownership. It says, *“I believe in you. I believe in your skills, your judgment, and your ability to deliver.”* When people feel trusted, they rise to the challenge. They take pride in their work. They go the extra mile. Early in my career, a leader said something to me I wasn’t expecting: “I trust your judgment.” No micromanaging. No quiet second-guessing later. Just ownership. That one sentence didn’t lower the bar. It raised it. That’s why these phrases matter. They don’t remove accountability. They reposition it. A few that do heavy lifting: “What’s your perspective?” Not politeness.
