    Communication is not broken. Access is. What looks like a “smart glove” is actually a human centered engineering solution to one of the oldest problems in society: language barriers. The SignAloud gloves, developed by Thomas Pryor and Navid Azodi (Lemelson MIT Student Prize winners), are not about gadgets. They are about restoring bidirectional communication for over 70 million deaf and hard of hearing people worldwide. The problem being solved American Sign Language (ASL) is: → A full, complex language → Based on motion, orientation, speed, and spatial context → Not directly translatable word for word Most systems fail because they simplify the problem. SignAloud doesn’t. How the system works (simplified science) → Flex sensors measure finger bending → IMU sensors capture X, Y, Z motion and orientation → Statistical regression models (precursors to modern neural networks) map gesture patterns to linguistic output → Real time processing converts gestures into spoken English with minimal latency This is biomechanics + machine learning + linguistics working together. --- Why this matters academically → Human Computer Interaction (HCI) → Assistive technology design → Sensor fusion and pattern recognition → Ethical AI focused on accessibility, not novelty This is AI used not to replace humans, but to connect them. --- Design philosophy (often overlooked) → Lightweight and ergonomic → Wearable like an aid, not a machine → Designed to disappear into daily life Good assistive tech doesn’t draw attention.     ✨🖐️ No More Mouse or Keyboard — From Now On, Your Hands Are All You Need! 🎉⌨️🖱️ -Description: This project showcases an innovative, unified system that transforms hand gestures captured by a webcam into both virtual mouse and keyboard inputs eliminating the need for any physical mouse or keyboard devices. Previously, I developed two separate modules: one for controlling the cursor with hand movements, and another for virtual keyboard input using finger gestures. This work unites these functionalities into a single seamless interface, allowing dynamic switching between mouse control and typing with intuitive gestures. -How It Works: Mouse Movement: When both the index and middle fingers are raised, the system tracks the index finger’s position to smoothly move the cursor on screen. Left Click: Performed by lowering the index finger while keeping the middle finger raised. Right Click: Triggered by lowering the middle finger while keeping the index finger raised. Keyboard Toggle: Lowering both index and middle fingers toggles the virtual keyboard overlay on or off. Typing: The user points at keys on the virtual keyboard and performs a left-click gesture to type characters. -Technical Details: The system uses MediaPipe Hands for precise and real-time hand landmark detection. OpenCV overlays the virtual keyboard on the camera feed and manages video processing. PyAutoGUI simulates system mouse and keyboard events, enabling full control of the computer. The design was structured with UML diagrams prior to development, providing clear modular separation between hand detection, input mapping, and user interface components. In 2015, two MIT students, Thomas Pryor and Navid Azodi, created SignAloud — a pair of smart gloves designed to translate sign language into spoken words in real time. The gloves use sensors to track hand movements and gestures, then send that data to a system that converts it into audible speech. The goal was simple but powerful: make communication more accessible between Deaf and hearing individuals without needing an interpreter. What started as a student project quickly gained global attention, even winning awards for innovation and accessibility. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most impactful ideas don’t come from big companies— but from people solving real problems they deeply care about.     In my final research project for the MSc in Data Science program, I implemented Hand Gesture Recognition using both a custom CNN and MediaPipe. Through experimentation and evaluation, I demonstrated that MediaPipe significantly outperformed traditional methods in terms of speed, accuracy, and computational efficiency. Building on this foundation, I recently developed a Human Pose Estimation system where MediaPipe once again played a critical role by identifying and tracking 33 key body landmarks in real time. ○ Applications Across Projects: In the Hand Gesture Recognition project, MediaPipe was used to detect fingertip positions and joint angles. These were mapped to specific gestures (like thumbs up, open palm, etc.), which can be used to control a virtual interface or assist individuals with hearing/speech impairments. In the Human Pose Estimation project, MediaPipe helped identify posture and movement patterns. This is useful for fitness tracking, physical therapy, gaming, contactless interactions, and gesture-based learning tools. ○ Benefits of Using MediaPipe: ● No Need for Custom Dataset: MediaPipe uses pre-trained models, so there's no requirement for manual data collection or model training. ● Real-Time Performance: MediaPipe is optimized for real-time video processing, even on low-spec devices. ● High Accuracy: The models are trained on large-scale, high-quality datasets using deep learning, resulting in impressive accuracy even in fast movements or partial occlusions. ● Cross-Platform Compatibility: It supports Android, iOS, web, and desktop, which makes deployment more flexible for various applications like AR/VR, fitness apps, and educational tools. ● Easy Integration with OpenCV and Python: It works smoothly with OpenCV, making it easier to visualize results and build interactive applications. ○ Limitations & Suggestions for Improvement: ● Lighting Sensitivity: While MediaPipe works well under normal lighting, performance can drop in poor or inconsistent lighting. Improvement: Add adaptive brightness correction or preprocessing filters. ● Camera Dependency: Accuracy may vary based on webcam resolution or angle. Improvement: Use multi-angle support or implement camera calibration options. ● Single Person Tracking: By default, most MediaPipe models track one person at a time. Improvement: Explore models with multi-person support for collaborative or group-based applications. MediaPipe has greatly simplified access to high-level computer vision functionalities. Both of my projects became significantly more effective and accurate with it. Created by MIT trained engineer Tomás Vega, the device sits on the roof of the mouth and works much like a wireless trackpad. A simple movement becomes a cursor action. A gesture becomes a click. A person who previously relied on others for digital access can suddenly operate modern technology independently. For anyone in SaaS, this is a glimpse of the future. We often talk about accessibility as a checklist item. This shows what happens when accessibility becomes the foundation for innovation rather than an afterthought. Here is what stands out from a product perspective: • The interface is entirely natural. No screens, no gloves, no camera tracking. • The hardware disappears into the background, allowing the software to become the experience. • Input is no longer limited by hands, sight or mobility. It is redefined by intent. The real lesson for SaaS builders is clear: The next wave of products will not win because they add more features. They will win because they remove barriers. Software that adapts to the user rather than forcing the user to adapt to it. Software that expands who can participate, not just how much they can do. Software that treats accessibility as a frontier of capability. Well, that’s exactly what I built — a Virtual Keyboard that lets you type using just your hand gestures in front of your webcam! 🚀 It started as a small curiosity — “Can I create something that feels futuristic but runs right on my laptop?” I began exploring Computer Vision and Hand Tracking libraries like OpenCV and MediaPipe, and before I knew it, I was drawing invisible keyboards in the air and detecting gestures to press virtual keys. 💡 How it works: The webcam detects your hand movements in real-time using MediaPipe’s hand landmarks. Whenever your finger tip touches a virtual key region (like the letter ‘A’), it triggers that key as if you physically pressed it. All keystrokes are displayed on screen, and you can type entire sentences — completely touch-free! The most challenging part? ⚙️ Getting accurate key detection while handling frame delays and lighting conditions. I had to tweak detection thresholds, smooth finger coordinates, and add debounce logic to prevent multiple unwanted clicks. But that’s what made this project so fun — blending math, logic, and creativity to make something that feels like magic. ✨ What I loved most is how it shows the power of AI + computer vision in reimagining simple things we use daily.
