Summary

Using augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) in infrastructure maintenance means harnessing digital technologies to help teams inspect, repair, and manage facilities and equipment without being physically on-site. These tools create immersive, interactive environments where technical information and collaboration can happen remotely, making maintenance tasks smoother and more accessible.

  • Try remote collaboration: Use AR or VR platforms to meet with your team virtually and review facility models together, even if everyone is in a different location.
  • Access real-time guidance: Wear AR devices to get step-by-step support from experts and instantly view digital manuals or models while working on repairs.
  • Cut down on travel: Take advantage of AR and VR to inspect sites and troubleshoot issues from your office, saving time and reducing costs associated with site visits.

What if you could review a mock up of your project facility in your conference room, but without building a physical mock up... And with the super power to zoom in and out to whatever details are important to you. You can! All you need is #BIM, Resolve, and a Meta Quest 3. With Resolve's collaboration and passthrough capabilities you can review fully federated BIM projects in #VR and #AR with your team. Place your model in your conference room table and gather around to discuss critical maintenance and safety concerns. Then zoom into equipment to understand the install procedure before you get on site. Even if someone isn't physically present their avatar will show up in the conference room with everyone else - no air travel required! Better for the project budget and the environment 🌎

🇺🇸 The US Navy integrated Augmented Reality Maintenance System (ARMS), a remote assistance solution for optimizing sustainment operations, into five warships: USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54), USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62), USS Gridley (DDG 101), USS Lenah Sutcliffe Higbee (DDG 123), and USS Nimitz (CVN 68). ARMS includes an AR headgear with optical and audio feed for experts to talk warfighters through damage and repair processes in real-time, and the device can be used to pull up virtual technical manuals and design models for restoring shipboard systems. 🗣️ “If outside help is required to resolve an issue, and that issue can be resolved by over-the-shoulder assistance via ARMS, that is a good thing,” said Naval Surface Warfare Center Port Hueneme Division Commanding Officer Capt. Tony Holmes.

You’re scheduled for yet another site visit—flights booked, safety gear packed, and a fresh supply of coffee ready to combat jet lag. But then, you remember…it’s 2025, and you don’t actually have to go. Thanks to XR (extended reality), enterprises can inspect sites, troubleshoot issues, and collaborate with teams without leaving the office. It’s like teleportation, but with way fewer existential risks. At Industrial IMMERSIVE 2025 , Dace Campbell of Cintoo and Ricky Burns, PE of bp shared how digital twins, AR, and VR are bringing the office and the field together. Turns out, remote collaboration has never been easier. Burns shared how XR has reduced offshore trips, saving time, money, and probably a few pairs of sea legs. He remembers a skeptical offshore worker who tried XR and basically said, "I don’t think I’ll ever need to go offshore again." If that’s not a ringing endorsement for workplace innovation, we don’t know what is. While hardhats and steel-toed boots will never go out of style, endless site visits will. But it’s not just about skipping travel days. XR also boosts safety and helps teams make better decisions using digital twins. "XR at its most basic level is a tool or a technology that enables effective decision making," Campbell said. NEW! Playbook Tips: Implementing and optimizing XR tech that connects the office and the field for cost savings, improved safety, and better decision-making.
