Asset Tracking → Every device is tagged with a unique ID. → Its full history is recorded - from intake to resale. → Specs, condition, and handling should all be registered. 2. Functional Testing → External parts should be checked for power and any missing parts. → Functionality of internal parts are tested using specialist software. → RAM, drives, screen condition, GPU, Wi-Fi - all must pass. 3. Cosmetic Grading → The condition of components need to graded by specialised technicians. → Grading meets strict standards of each platform (e.g. Amazon, eBay). → This ensures you know exactly what you're buying. 4. 🎥 Inside one of the largest e-recycling facilities in the US The scale is impressive: ➡️ Up to 6 million pounds of electronic waste processed every month ➡️ That’s roughly 2,7 million kilograms, or 2.700 tonnes monthly This is the work of an ITAD provider (ITAD = IT Asset Disposition) These specialised facilities handle the secure processing, data destruction, recycling and resale of #IT equipment at end-of-life. Having lived in the US myself back in 2008 (in Tennessee), I’ve seen how structured and industrialised this sector can be. And of course, similar facilities exist today across #Belgium and Europe. But here’s where my focus sits today: 👉 before devices even reach this stage, we look at how to extend the lifecycle of office electronics like #smartphones #laptops #tablets before they enter large-scale recycling streams. Because recycling is only one part of a broader framework or R-strategies. 💡 For ICT devices, the highest value is often in reuse, repair and refurbishment. (Recycling is the last stage). During my time working at a leasing company in Germany (active in 28 countries), I saw how devices were prepared for extended lifecycles as devices: 📦 Centrally aggregated in Germany 🔐 Securely wiped (data erasure) 🔄 Resold into second-life markets (B2B, B2C, leasing, etc.) Today, a large share of refurbished or second-hand devices in Europe (estimated 60–70%) comes from outside Europe or from regions with limited traceability. And there we have a different approach and believe value should be captured earlier and closer to home. At the source of the 'end of the first use' step. Instead of sending devices into global auction flows and bringing them back later, we: 📍 Source devices directly from companies and governments 🔍 Grade them early on functioning (A/B/C/D) 🚫 Only send 'waste'-stage devices to recycling facilities 🔧 Enable local repair, reuse or component harvesting 🔐 Ensure certified data erasure 💰 Provide transparent valuation and trade-in insights = Meaning: money goes back to the owner of the devices when the second use is provided. Because: - A-grade devices can often be reused immediately - B/C-grade devices can be repaired or repurposed - D-grade devices can support local recycling and material recovery All within local ecosystems, reducing costs for e-waste management and procurement. 💬 Critical thought Large ITAD facilities play a critical role. What they see instead is a structured, assembly-style operation, designed for scale and consistency. Every device follows the same sequence: Diagnostics → Grading → Repair (if needed) → Final QA. No shortcuts. No improvisation. A repeatable workflow that enforces excellence. What surprises visitors the most is the level of standardisation. Two technicians in different zones follow the same SOPs, the same checklists, the same definitions of “acceptable” and “needs work.” There’s no room for interpretation—and that’s intentional.
