This finding highlights that a model with 350 million parameters can outperform a 175 billion parameter model by nearly three times. The implications for enterprise AI adoption are significant. For the past two years, the narrative has been that bigger is always better, requiring massive compute budgets and infrastructure investments for capable AI agents. This research contradicts that notion. The key difference lies in targeted fine-tuning on specific tasks rather than general-purpose training. The smaller model focused its capacity on learning tool-calling behaviors, achieving remarkable parameter efficiency where larger models often become less effective. Most organizations do not need AI that can perform every task; they require AI that excels in their specific workflows.     AWS re:Invent? I've attended AWS re:Invent for six years, and this one felt different. After five years inside Amazon Web Services (AWS) building cloud programs and returning this year as a board member and journalist, the hallway conversations had changed. Production, not pilots. Deployment, not demos. My top 5 takeaways: 1. Agentic AI is in production, not PowerPoints. Capital One demoed their Auto Navigator which is a multi-agent workflow for car buying that's live software, not a pilot. AWS formalized the pattern with AgentCore, and the SDK has been downloaded over 2 million times in five months. Thomson Reuters is already building on the platform, with CTO Joel Hron telling me it "accelerates development cycles" while maintaining enterprise-grade security. 2. AI agents are getting wallets and identities. AWS published reference architecture for crypto AI agents on Bedrock with wallets secured by KMS. Synergetics.ai founder Raghu Bala put it perfectly: AI agents need "Identity, Registry, Wallet, Payment rails, Name Resolution, and Communication protocols." The infrastructure for agents that hold assets and sign transactions is no longer theoretical. 3. Unified data is the real competitive moat. Discord migrated trillions of messages to ScyllaDB and cut response times 93%. Freshworks moved 2 petabytes and hit sub-5ms latency. The moat isn't the database—it's what fast, unified data enables. 4. Frontier Agents are teammates, not tools. AWS introduced autonomous agents that work for hours or days without human intervention—learning your repos, your patterns, your naming conventions. Commonwealth Bank cut incident resolution from hours to 15 minutes. 5. Governance is an accelerator, not a blocker. The companies moving fastest have observable, auditable systems already in place. Governance unlocks speed. The convergence of AI, blockchain, and physical-world data isn't coming. It's here. P.S. The show was super fun as a customer!!!!!     The detailed incident report from AWS is now public, and it’s well worth a read (link in comments). Here’s a distilled summary of what went wrong, and what tech leaders should take away. What happened: 1️⃣ A race condition in the DNS management system serving DynamoDB in US-EAST-1 led to endpoint resolution failures. 2️⃣ That dominant database service failure cascaded: new EC2 launches failed due to lease-management issues (on which EC2 depends) and network components suffered health-check failures that rippled across load balancers. 3️⃣ The impact was global. Apps and critical services relying on AWS saw outages, degraded performance, or intermittent failures. Why this matters: 1️⃣ Concentration risk: Even for a hyperscale provider like AWS, a failure in one region and one service (DynamoDB DNS) can cascade globally, turning a “cloud issue” into a business continuity event. 2️⃣ Complex interdependencies: The issue wasn’t just database DNS; it propagated into compute, networking, automation, and customer-facing systems. We often design for failure at one layer but underestimate coupling across layers. 3️⃣ Recovery complexity = resilience risk: Recovery isn’t just restarting services; it’s clearing backlogs, restoring state, and ensuring downstream systems don’t remain impaired. My perspective/takeaways: 1️⃣ Design for worst-case provider failure. Not just “an AZ down,” but “core service in region down” and the ripple effects. 2️⃣ Visibility and dependency mapping matter, so know what services your stack depends on, and how managed service failures might cascade. 3️⃣ Recovery orchestration is as vital as fault tolerance, so plan for backlog recovery, state cleanup, and cross-team communication. 4️⃣ Cloud-vendor resilience is not infinite, and shared failure domains persist even in hyperscale clouds. Plan for multi-region or cross-provider fallback and clear internal recovery roles. 5️⃣ Executive mindset and risk alignment. For C-suites, this is a reminder: infrastructure risk is business risk. Discuss cloud-failure modes at the board table, not just application risk. What this isn't about: This isn’t about blaming AWS. The lesson is that even the largest provider can experience a systemic failure, and we can all learn from these experiences. And... it's always DNS 😉

    🚨 Lessons from the AWS us-east-1 outage on Oct 19 🚨 A single low-level DNS automation bug in DynamoDB propagated into a massive multi-service, region-wide failure lasting over 14 hours. So much is built on AWS that for a while it seemed as if the entire internet was down... Some interesting details from AWS’s postmortem 👇 🧩 Root cause: A race condition in DynamoDB’s DNS automation deleted its own regional endpoint. Damn! ⚡ Mitigation: AWS engineers identified and fixed the root cause in just over 2 hours. That's impressive, given AWS's scale. Kudos to the AWS on-calls! 🏗️ AWS runs on AWS: The DynamoDB failure cascaded to EC2, NLB, Lambda, Redshift, ECS, EKS, SQS, and many other services. It’s amazing to see how deep the rabbit hole goes and how much AWS is built on top of AWS! 🤖 Automation paradox: The very automation meant to speed recovery caused a “congestive collapse” in EC2’s recovery workflow. It was only resolved once human on-calls intervened to manually throttle and clear queues. There’s still hope for humanity! 🙌 💭 The bigger lesson: Service outages, in particular at hyper scale, are inevitable. If something can fail, it will fail - good old Murphy's law! So how do you protect against the next cloud outage? ✅ Redundancy: Architect your service for multi-region resiliency. Active-active or active-passive failover, pick your poison. If your service is not architected this way, you're vulnerable! ⚙️ Detection & mitigation: Real-time metrics, fast alerts, and a world-class on-call culture are all key. Having all of that is what enabled AWS to detect and fix the root cause within hours. 📚 Learning from failures: AWS’s postmortem is a masterclass in rigorous incident analysis, and it was powered by Amazon's notorious Correction of Errors (CoE) process. Every engineering org should have such process in place. This is how you ensure continuous improvements!

    Alongside building resilient, highly available systems and strengthening security posture, I’ve been exploring a new focus area, optimising cloud costs. Over the last few months, this has led to some clear lessons for me that are worth sharing. 1. Compute planning is the foundation. Standardising on machine families and analysing workload patterns allows you to commit to savings plans or reserved instances. This is often the highest ROI move, delivering big savings without actually making a lot of technical changes. 2. Account structures impact cost. Multiple AWS accounts improve governance and security but make it harder to benefit from bulk discounts. Using consolidated billing and commitment sharing across accounts brings the efficiency back. 3. Kubernetes compute checks are important. Nodes in K8s are often over-provisioned or underutilised. Automated rebalancing tools help, as does smart use of spot instances selected for reliability. On top of this, workload resizing during off hours, reducing CPU and memory when demand is low, delivers direct and recurring savings. 4. Watch for operational leaks. Debug logs on CDNs and load balancers, once useful, often stay enabled long after issues are fixed. They quietly pile up costs until someone takes notice. 5. Right-sizing is a continuous process. Urgent projects often lead to overprovisioned instances for anticipated load that never fully arrives. Monitoring and regular reviews are the only way to keep infrastructure aligned with reality. The real win in cloud cost optimisation comes from treating it as a continuous practice, not a one-off project.     Staring at the AWS console, it's easy to get lost in a sea of 200+ services. When I first approached data engineering on AWS, I made a classic mistake: trying to memorize what each service does in isolation. It was overwhelming and, frankly, the wrong way to look at it. The real "a-ha" moment came when I stopped thinking about individual services and started following the data. It turns out, a single piece of data has a complex lifecycle, and each stage requires a purpose-built tool. Here’s the end-to-end data flow I'm mapping out: 1. The Entry Point (Ingestion) This is where data is born or enters the ecosystem. It’s not one-size-fits-all. It could be transactional data from Amazon RDS, a real-time stream from Amazon Kinesis, or a massive batch migration using AWS DMS. 2. The Central Hub (Storage) Before any major processing, all raw data from all those sources lands in Amazon S3. This is the durable, flexible, and massively scalable "single source of truth." It's the core of a modern data lake. 3. The Factory (Transformation) Raw data is messy and rarely useful on its own. This is where AWS Glue or EMR come in. They are the engines that catalog, clean, and transform that raw data into a pristine, analysis-ready format. 4. The Storefront (Serving) Once transformed, who needs it? This access layer serves the right data to the right user: Analysts get Amazon Redshift for complex BI dashboard queries. Applications get Amazon DynamoDB (for low-latency) or Amazon RDS (for relational access). Data Scientists get Amazon Athena to query data directly in S3 for ad-hoc analysis. My key insight? S3 (as the lake) and Glue (as the catalog) are the true heart of this entire system. They create a decoupled architecture that lets all these other specialized compute and query services plug in and play their part. It's a fundamental shift in thinking.

    The key insight from AWS re:Invent this year? AI isn’t the differentiator anymore. Knowing where it truly works is. The best insights didn’t come from keynotes or sessions. They came from the limo rides Harish Dittakavi and I hosted. They came from serendipity meetings in the hallways. Put a bunch of engineering leaders in a moving car, away from the noise, and they get surprisingly honest about what’s actually happening. Here’s the one theme that kept repeating: AI in engineering has quietly crossed the line from autocomplete to autonomous work. Leaders weren’t talking about “faster coding.” They were talking about: - agents refactoring legacy systems - agents rewriting tests - agents generating docs - agents doing migration work measured in years saved - agents that take on the boring, brittle, painful parts of engineering And in every conversation, the same realization surfaced: 👉 The leverage isn’t in suggestions. It’s in letting agents own whole workflows. But here’s the twist — something almost everyone admitted: Nobody has good AI metrics today. Not one team felt confident saying, “AI made us 20% faster,” because we’re measuring the wrong things. Prompt counts? Suggestion acceptance? “Time saved” popups? All useless without outcomes. The real questions leaders were asking inside those limos: - “Are my AI-heavy teams actually reducing cycle time?” - “Is throughput going up or just PR size?” - “Are we creating more rework?” - “Is AI speeding up flow or slowing reviews?” This is exactly why we built Hivel Hivel measures AI adoption directly in the code — PR by PR — and connects it to delivery outcomes like cycle time, throughput, review patterns, and quality. As a cloud learner / professional you just need to understand how these updates are changing the work we do. Let me break it down 👇 🔹 Lambda: Now supports agent-based workflows You can now create AI agents inside AWS Lambda using the new Agent capabilities. This means it can call external APIs, make decisions based on responses, and Execute step-by-step plans. 🔹 CloudWatch: Smarter anomaly detection CloudWatch has added AI-based insights that automatically detect unusual spikes or drops, help explain what caused the change, and reduce the need for manual dashboard digging. 🔹 IAM: AI-generated policy suggestions When creating IAM roles or policies, AWS now offers auto-suggested permissions based on usage, it saves time and reduces the chance of misconfigured access. 🔹 S3: Data prep for AI/ML built-in S3 recently added features like object transformations for model-ready formats, and integrations with SageMaker and Bedrock. Your raw data can be cleaned, structured, and sent to models, all without leaving S3. You don’t need to shift to a new “AI role” to stay relevant, but you do need to notice what’s changing in the tools you already use.
