    Designing effective surveys is not just about asking questions. It is about understanding how people think, remember, decide, and respond. Cognitive science offers powerful models that help researchers structure surveys in ways that align with mental processes. The foundational work by Tourangeau and colleagues provides a four-stage model of the survey response process: comprehension, retrieval, judgment, and response selection. Each step introduces potential for cognitive error, especially when questions are ambiguous or memory is taxed. The CASM model -Cognitive Aspects of Survey Methodology- builds on this by treating survey responses as cognitive tasks. It incorporates working memory limits, motivational factors, and heuristics, emphasizing that poorly designed surveys increase error due to cognitive overload. Designers must recognize that the brain is a limited system and build accordingly Dual-process theory adds another important layer. People shift between fast, automatic responses (System 1) and slower, more effortful reasoning (System 2). Whether a user relies on one or the other depends heavily on question complexity, scale design, and contextual framing. Higher cognitive load often pushes users into heuristic-driven responses, undermining validity.     Remember that bad survey you wrote? The one that resulted in responses filled with blatant bias and caused you to doubt whether your respondents even understood the questions? Creating a survey may seem like a simple task, but even minor errors can result in biased results and unreliable data. If this has happened to you before, it's likely due to one or more of these common mistakes in your survey design: 1. Ambiguous Questions: Vague wording like “often” or “regularly” leads to varied interpretations among respondents. Be specific—use clear options like “daily,” “weekly,” or “monthly” to ensure consistent and accurate responses. 2. Double-Barreled Questions: Combining two questions into one, such as “Do you find our website attractive and easy to navigate?” can confuse respondents and lead to unclear answers. Break these into separate questions to get precise, actionable feedback. 3. Leading/Loaded Questions: Questions that push respondents toward a specific answer, like “Do you agree that responsible citizens should support local businesses?” can introduce bias. Keep your questions neutral to gather unbiased, genuine opinions. 4. Assumptions: Assuming respondents have certain knowledge or opinions can skew results. For example, “Are you in favor of a balanced budget?” assumes understanding of its implications. Provide necessary context to ensure respondents fully grasp the question. 5. Burdensome Questions: Asking complex or detail-heavy questions, such as “How many times have you dined out in the last six months?” can overwhelm respondents and lead to inaccurate answers. Simplify these questions or offer multiple-choice options to make them easier to answer. 6. Handling Sensitive Topics: Sensitive questions, like those about personal habits or finances, need to be phrased carefully to avoid discomfort. Use neutral language, provide options to skip or anonymize answers, or employ tactics like Randomized Response Survey (RRS) to encourage honest, accurate responses.     I analyzed 3,527,492 survey responses captured over the last year. Here's what the data shows... 1. Don't ask hard questions first ↳ Great surveys start with a VERY easy question ↳ Harder questions come later – once someone has "bought in" to your survey ↳ Consider starting with a Yes/No question ↳ The best surveys created on our platform have an 85%+ first answer completion rate. 2. "Choose one the following" > freeform inputs ↳ Freeform inputs are great for getting raw voice-of-customer language ↳ ...But they take effort to complete, and our monkey brains would rather just push buttons ↳ Freeform questions work best as contextual follow-ups to specific one-of-many questions, e.g. "Do you have a podcast? Yes/No" -> IF NO: "In a sentence or two, what's held you back from starting a podcast?" 3. Write conditional, "conversational" surveys ↳ Don't set up a survey that's just a flat list of one-size-fits-all questions ↳ The questions you ask should change based on previous answers ↳ ...And the question text itself should also change 4. Don't make it about you ↳ This is probably the most important point ↳ You're asking someone to give you time + personal data ↳ ...What's in it for them? ↳ Poor performing surveys don't make this obvious ↳ Great surveys make it clear that the data captured will help deliver better information, better recommendations, better everything – the questions are to help *them*, not *you* 5. No more than 4-5 answer options ↳ For choose one-of-the-following questions, limit your options to 4-5 ↳ If you need more options, show the top 4 first with a "Maybe something else?" option.     If you’re going to collect primary data, here are 10 things to keep in mind: 1️⃣ Conduct formative research. This doesn’t mean spending thousands of dollars. It means grounding your study. There are two schools of thought in social theory: 👉 Grounded theory → theory flows up from the data. 👉Pre-existing theory → theory guides your data collection. Whichever you lean toward, start by listening. If your survey is about challenges faced by people living with HIV, don’t sit in your room inventing questions. Go talk to them. Also, don’t forget: blogs, forums, and public chats are goldmines of lived experience. 2️⃣ Calculate your sample size. Even for descriptive surveys, you need sample size for precision (for narrow CIs). For analytical studies, you need power (to detect differences). 3️⃣ Create a statistical analysis plan. Most people skip this, but it’s key. A SAP forces you to think about how you’ll analyze data before you collect it. It also reveals gaps: maybe you forgot to include important confounders in your questionnaire. Better to fix that now. Failure to plan is planning to fail. 4️⃣ Build a sampling frame. This is simply a list of the people you want to sample. If you’re doing probabilistic sampling, you need this. Decide upfront: closed survey or open survey? 5️⃣ Perform cognitive testing of your instrument. People talk about “validated questionnaires” as if validation falls from heaven. It doesn’t. Validation = testing how real people interpret your questions. Give your survey to 2-3 people at least. Then sit with them afterward. Ask: “What confused you?” “When you heard this question, what came to mind?” If 10 people interpret a question 10 different ways, you don’t have a valid question. That’s bias. 6️⃣ Publish your protocol. Yes, on ClinicalTrials.gov. It’s not just for clinical trials. Benefits: Forces clarity in your design. Reviewer comments can sharpen your study. 7️⃣ Program survey logic. Never rely on instructions like “skip this question if not applicable.” Nobody reads instructions. If your survey has skip patterns, automate them. Don’t delegate to humans what technology can handle. Platforms like Chisquares™ (www.chisquares.com) make this easy. 8️⃣ Translate into required languages. People always understand best in their mother tongue. Translation isn’t optional in diverse populations—it’s respect and clarity. 9️⃣ Do an early cut test. Don’t wait until the survey closes to discover problems. Run an early check to confirm: 👉The survey is working as intended. 👉Responses make sense. 👉No major errors. Catching issues early saves you. 🔟 Document everything. Quantitative research is a systematic process of testing hypotheses, measuring relationships, and making predictions based on measurable evidence. It's about designing studies that produce reliable, replicable, generalizable findings. But here's where most research fails: choosing the wrong design, sampling incorrectly, or running tests that don't match the data. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆: 1. Research Design → Experimental, correlational, or descriptive? Your question dictates your design. 2. Sampling Strategy → Probability sampling for generalization. Non-probability when it's not feasible. 3. Measurement → Valid, reliable instruments. Know your scales: nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio. 4. Data Collection → Surveys, experiments, observations—each with specific strengths and limitations. 5. Statistical Analysis → Match your test to your variables and research questions. 6. Interpretation → Report effect sizes, not just p-values. Statistical significance ≠ practical significance. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆: ❌ Using convenience sampling but claiming generalizability ❌ Confusing correlation with causation ❌ Ignoring validity and reliability of your measures ❌ Running tests without checking assumptions ❌ P-hacking your way to significance 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲: Your methodology isn't about the software you use. It's about designing a study that can actually answer your research question with credible evidence. SPSS and Python are just tools. The real skill is knowing when to use a t-test vs. ANOVA, understanding what your coefficient of determination actually means, and recognizing when your data violates assumptions.     On survey items and publication (or get it right or get out of here!) As an author & an editor, one of the most damning indictments of a paper is a reviewer saying "the items do not measure what the authors claim to study." When I see that criticism, I typically flip through the paper, look at the items, & more often than I would like, the reviewer is right. Leaving little choice, re-do the study or have it rejected. This is frustrating, bc designing effective measures is within the reach of any author. While one can spend a lifetime studying item development, there are also simple guides, like this one offered by Pew (https://lnkd.in/ei-7vzfz), that, if you pay attention, can help you pre-empt many potential criticisms of your work. But. It takes time. Which is time well-spent, because designing effective survey questions is a necessary condition for conducting high impact research. Why? Because poorly written questions lead to confusion, biased answers, or incomplete responses, which undermine the validity of a study's findings. When well-crafted, a survey elicits accurate responses, ensures concepts are operationalized properly, & create opportunities to provide actionable insights. So how to do it? According to Pew Research Center, good surveys have several characteristics: Question Clarity: Questions are simple, use clear language to avoid misunderstandings, & avoid combining multiple issues (are not double-barreled questions). Use the Right Question Type: Use open-ended questions for detailed responses & closed-ended ones for easier analysis. Match the question type to your research question. Avoid Bias: Craft neutral questions that don’t lead respondents toward specific answers. Avoid emotionally charged or suggestive wording. Question Order: Arrange questions logically to avoid influencing responses to later questions. Logical flow ensures better data quality. Have Been Pretested: Use pilot tests to identify issues with question wording, structure, or respondent interpretation before finalizing your survey. Use Consistent Items Over Time: Longitudinal studies should use consistent wording & structure across all survey iterations to track changes reliably. Questionnaire Length: Concise surveys reduce respondent fatigue & elicit high-quality responses. Cultural Sensitivity: Be mindful of cultural differences. Avoid idioms or terms that may not translate well across groups. Avoid Jargon: Avoid technical terms or acronyms unless they are clearly defined. Response Options: Provide balanced & clear answer choices for closed-ended questions, including “Other” or “Don’t know” when needed. So why post a primer on surveys & items? BC badly designed surveys not only get your paper to reject, but they also waste your participants' time - neither of which is a good outcome. So take time your time, get the items right, get the survey right, and you be far more likely to find a home for your work. #researchdesign

    I've worked on SEVEN reports this year. I normally ask you all "is that too many? Is that very few?" but for this one, I have my answer. It's a lot. But a lot of briefs skip out this ONE thing: No survey strategist. No strategic input for category, quality, or order of the questions. No answers to the question "why are we asking what we are asking?" And that leaves it to the report creator(me) to "find" a POV after the responses are already in. This is much harder to do than if we go in with a mission. Unbiased, but directional. For example, you could be asking "Have you received a promotion in the last year?" to learn how promotions correspond with salary increases. But how does this question fit into the bigger story? If you can't answer that, you have a floating fact, at best and wasted respondent time, at worst. A survey strategist would frame a series of questions that explore the bigger story of career progression. They might ask: 👉 “Have you received a promotion in the last year?” (that’s your baseline, your starting point for career movement) 👉 “Did this promotion come with a salary increase?” (now you’re tying that movement to financial impact) 👉 “How did the promotion affect your job satisfaction?” (the emotional weight of advancement) 👉 “How do you perceive your growth opportunities within the company?” ( here, you’re getting at the big picture: loyalty, ambition, future potential) They'll understand the question logic, how an analyst would layer the responses, and what the designer would need to tell the story via graphs. Survey design doesn't need to be expensive. You can do it in-house and get a research report creator (me, Becky Lawlor) to sanity-check the questions, refine the flow, and tie them back to a clear narrative. Choose a Sampling Method 📌Quantitative research often uses probability sampling to ensure results can be generalized to the whole population. A. Probability Sampling Methods (Preferred for Quantitative Research): 📌Sampling Method Description and When to Use 📍Simple Random Sampling - Every individual has an equal chance of being selected. Used when you have a complete list of population. 📍Systematic Sampling -Select every nth individual from a list. It is used when population is ordered or listed. 📍Stratified Sampling-Divide the population into subgroups (strata) and randomly sample from each. It is used when population has key subgroups (e.g., by age, gender, income). 📍Cluster Sampling-Randomly select whole groups or clusters, then survey all within them or sample within clusters. Used when population is spread out geographically. B. Non-Probability Sampling Methods (Less Ideal for Quantitative Research but Sometimes Used): 📍Sampling Method Description When to Use 📌Convenience Sampling Select whoever is easiest to reach. When time/resources are limited. 📌Quota Sampling Ensure specific numbers of participants from key groups.
