    Human decisions aren’t static moments - they’re unfolding processes. We don’t just pick an option; we accumulate evidence, shift attention, and adapt as we go. Traditional models assume fixed preferences and perfect rationality, but real choices are fluid. Our goals change, confidence fluctuates, and uncertainty shapes every step. Modern choice modeling captures this dynamic reality. It starts with probabilistic thinking, accepting that people rarely make identical decisions twice. Signal detection theory adds nuance by showing how we decide whether evidence is strong enough to act. Sequential sampling models go further, tracing how information builds until a decision threshold is reached. These models can predict not just what people choose, but how long it takes and how sure they are. As choices grow more complex, preference itself becomes a moving target. Decision field models show how attention alternates between attributes - why adding one more product, feature, or design element can unexpectedly shift preference. Reinforcement learning explains how feedback shapes these patterns over time, connecting the psychology of experience to the brain’s reward system and showing how people balance habit with goal-driven behavior. More recently, two powerful frameworks are reshaping how uncertainty is understood. Quantum cognitive models treat thought as a superposition of possible states - explaining why order, framing, and context change our responses. Bayesian approaches describe how beliefs stabilize as evidence accumulates. Together, they capture the full arc of decision-making: the fluid, evolving states of thought and the structured updating of belief. Choice, in this view, isn’t random or irrational. It’s the result of dynamic, probabilistic systems shaped by attention, learning, and memory. Understanding these mechanisms gives us a more realistic foundation for design, policy, and AI - one that models how people truly decide, not how we wish they did.

Find a decision framework that works, then defend it like sacred doctrine. But the leaders who thrive in volatility? They upgrade their thinking like they upgrade their technology. Rigid frameworks turn into cognitive traps. ❌ Force new challenges into old patterns ❌ Miss emerging opportunities ❌ Make decisions based on outdated assumptions. When markets shift, they can't adapt fast enough. Adaptive leaders don't defend their mental models. They evolve them continuously. Here's the 5-step system to build mental model flexibility: 1️⃣ Keep a Decision Journal Document your assumptions before big calls. Review actual outcomes monthly to spot blind spots. 2️⃣ Map Scenarios Against Assumptions Take your current plan and stress-test it against 3–4 possible futures. See where it breaks before reality forces the lesson. 3️⃣ Hold Collective Sensemaking Sessions Run quarterly “What are we missing?” meetings. Different perspectives surface blind spots no single leader can see. 4️⃣ Run Post-Mortems to Update Models After wins and losses, extract insights: What did your model predict? What did it miss? Adjust the framework for next time. 5️⃣ Map the Chain Reaction Before Committing Before making a major decision, anticipate second- and third-order effects. Don’t just react to the first outcome.     LLMs are great at many things; however, continuous decision-making, which is needed for agentic work, is not one of them! A team of researchers has developed SAGE (Self-evolving Agents with Reflective and Memory-augmented Abilities), an innovative framework to enhance large language models' decision-making capabilities in complex, dynamic environments. The backbone of SAGE consists of three main components: - Iterative Feedback Mechanism - Reflection Module - Memory Management System Iterative Feedback Mechanism The Iterative Feedback Mechanism involves three key agents: - User (U): Initiates tasks and provides initial input. - Assistant (A): Generates text and actions based on environmental observations. - Checker (C): Evaluates the assistant's output and provides feedback. The iterative process continues until the checker deems the assistant's output correct or the iteration limit is reached. This mechanism allows for continuous improvement of the assistant's responses. Reflection Module The Reflection Module enables the assistant to analyze past experiences and store learned lessons in memory. It provides a sparse reward signal, such as binary success states, and generates self-reflections. These reflections are more informative than scalar rewards and are stored in the agent's memory for future reference. Memory Management System SAGE employs a sophisticated memory management system divided into two types: - Short-Term Memory (STM): Stores immediately relevant information for the current task. It's highly volatile and frequently updated. - Long-Term Memory (LTM): Retains information deemed important for future tasks. It has a larger capacity and can store information for extended periods. A key innovation in SAGE is also the MemorySyntax method, which combines the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve with linguistic knowledge. This approach optimizes the agent's memory and external storage management by: - Adjusting sentence structure based on part-of-speech priority. - Simulating human memory and forgetting mechanisms. - Managing the transfer of information between working memory (Ms) and long-term memory (Ml).

    I have spent much of my career working with optimization models, and few tools have more practical value than mixed-integer linear programming (MILP). MILP gives us a structured way to encode constraints, costs, and decisions across complex systems. It has powered countless supply chain, logistics, and scheduling tools for decades. But MILP is not a complete solution. It is one part of a larger architecture for making decisions over time, under uncertainty, and with incomplete information. The limitation is not in the math. It is in the framing. MILP models assume a single decision point with full visibility. But most supply chain problems (how to allocate vehicles, prioritize trims, or manage flow) are not solved once. They evolve. A MILP, by itself, has no memory. It does not adapt or learn. This is where tunable parameters become essential. A good MILP model is more than a solver. It is a policy engine. By exposing weights, thresholds, and priorities, we give ourselves levers to adjust behavior without rewriting the model. These parameters turn a rigid optimization into a flexible decision system. Take a Toyota example. Suppose we are allocating constrained supply of RAV4s, Camrys, and Corollas across regions. Each zone has different demand profiles, customer preferences, and dealer dynamics. One region wants hybrids. Another needs fast-turning base models. The business wants to support new launches while protecting margin and equity. Instead of hard-coding all of that, we expose parameters: a weight for hybrid support, a weight for dealer equity, and a factor for new model visibility. Now the MILP becomes tunable. We can simulate, test, align, and adjust without rebuilding the math. This is the difference between solving a model and building a system. MILP is the engine. Tunable parameters are the steering. And neither matters unless they are part of a loop. Information comes in. Decisions go out. Outcomes are logged. Policies adapt. So yes, learn MILP deeply. But do not stop there. Wrap it in a policy. Tune it. Let it learn. We are not solving for one moment.     📢 After a year of intensive research, I’m thrilled to share the results of our new paper, that presents a new vision for the application of Reinforcement Learning in finance. We began with a simple but powerful question: 👉 How can investment strategies not only survive but adapt and thrive in chaotic markets? 🔍 Traditional quantitative models—and even modern Learning-to-Rank systems—often treat each investment decision as an isolated event. In volatile markets, this static approach can result in sharp drawdowns and elevated crash risk. 💡 Our contribution is a dynamic, agent-based framework that redefines asset allocation as a sequential decision-making problem. It integrates: 🤖 A Deep Reinforcement Learning agent that learns an adaptive ranking policy 🧠 A Meta-Learning Filter that gates trades based on volatility forecasts 📊 A Risk-Based Optimizer for robust portfolio construction ✅ Tested on multi-year cryptocurrency data, our framework consistently outperformed static benchmarks. Most notably, the agent learned to adapt across market regimes—behaving contrarian in calm markets and momentum-driven during stress—providing new empirical evidence for the Adaptive Markets Hypothesis.     What if instead of passively observing an LLM's confidence, we could actively teach it to know when to retrieve? The final post of my Adaptive RAG series explores training-based approaches that treat retrieval decisions as a learned skill. The previous posts established that naive RAG is costly and often harmful, before exploring lightweight pre-generation methods and confidence-based probing. This final post takes a fundamentally different approach: treating adaptive retrieval as a learned skill. Instead of just inferring when a model needs help, we can explicitly train it to be self-aware. We examine three paradigms in increasing order of sophistication: 🔹 Gatekeeper Models: Lightweight classifiers that act as intelligent routers, deciding whether to invoke retrieval 🔹 Fine-tuned LLMs: Fine-tuning approaches that teach an LLM to recognize its own knowledge gaps and signal when it needs external information 🔹 Reasoning Agents: Advanced methods that train LLMs to become autonomous agents, engaging in multi-step reasoning about what they know, what they need, and how to gather missing information iteratively The post includes a practical decision framework to help you choose based on API access, training budget, query complexity, and latency requirements.     Having done my PhD in decision-making under uncertainty, I greatly appreciate Matt Goldklang's recent article on climate and uncertainty. What I found most helpful is separating the key sources of uncertainty (in my own words): how society would respond to climate change (cannot be predicted but can be influenced), scientific disagreement in climate models (can be reduced), and inherent unpredictability of weather and climate systems (cannot be predicted).   What I love the most is Matt offers suggestions on how we should make decisions given the uncertainty (copied below since most of you won’t read the whole essay):   “Finally, we offer a few heuristics for climate decision-making, tailored to the dominant uncertainty source: 1. Short-Term Decisions (Model Uncertainty Dominates) When climate models are your largest uncertainty source—despite their strong consensus about some aspects of climate change—embrace portfolio approaches. Diversify across the model ensemble using skill-based weights rather than equal weighting. Crucially, work with full probability distributions, not point estimates, and pay special attention to tail outcomes. The models may agree on direction, but their spread still matters for optimal allocation and risk management. I always plan for a 45-minute commute because of the long-tail, and try to ensure that my meetings start at least an hour after I plan to leave. 2. Long-Term Decisions (Scenario/Deep Uncertainty Dominates) When facing scenario uncertainty or profound epistemic gaps about system behavior, deploy robust decision-making frameworks. Seek strategies that perform acceptably across all plausible futures rather than optimizing for any single scenario. Develop detailed storyline approaches that weave together scenario pathways, potential tipping points, and both reducible (epistemic) and irreducible (aleatoric) uncertainties. These narratives become the foundation for adaptive pathways planning—strategies that can evolve as the future unfolds and uncertainties resolve. The meta-heuristic: match your decision framework to your uncertainty profile, recognizing that tipping points, adaptation, and scenario limitations add complexity layers that may shift which framework is most appropriate.”    https://lnkd.in/e8NXdr-c #ClimateModeling #DecisionMakingUnderUncertainty
