🌈Exploring uncharted creative art techniques can inspire innovation. Imagine painting with luminescent inks on spinning, transparent acrylic discs to create layered, kinetic light art that shifts as viewers move around it. Or sculpting with magnetized ferrofluids in clear containers, allowing the artist to shape and animate sculptures using magnets. Another idea involves "smoke imprinting," capturing ephemeral smoke patterns on treated surfaces for ethereal, organic designs. One could also experiment with sound-reactive installations, where vibrations from music create dynamic visuals in real-time using colored sands or liquids. These techniques challenge traditional boundaries and encourage a fusion of science, art, and technology.🌌🌈

🌱 From banana stems to luxury bags - who would have thought? Recently I came across something that completely changed my perspective on sustainability. We often think of sustainable materials as compromises, don't we? → Less durable → Less attractive → Less practical But what if nature already has solutions we haven't fully explored? I discovered that banana stems - yes, those parts we typically discard - can be transformed into leather-like material for creating stunning bags. This isn't just fascinating - it's transformative for how we approach sustainable alternatives to plastic. The process involves: 🔸 Harvesting stems that would otherwise be waste 🔸 Processing them using minimal resources 🔸 Creating a durable, flexible material 🔸 Crafting beautiful products with real market value 🔸 Reducing plastic consumption What strikes me most is how this challenges our assumptions about sustainability requiring sacrifice. These banana stem bags aren't just "good enough" alternatives - they're desirable products in their own right. The implications extend beyond fashion: ✅ Agricultural waste becomes valuable resource ✅ Local economies benefit from new industries ✅ Consumers get beautiful, unique products ✅ Our planet benefits from reduced plastic usage I'm convinced that our sustainability journey needs more of these unexpected innovations - solutions that don't just replace problematic materials but actually improve upon them. I'm Dr Nisha. Have you encountered other surprising sustainable materials? What creative alternatives have captured your attention? I'd love to hear your thoughts on how we can continue discovering these hidden possibilities in nature. Looking forward to exploring more of these innovations together.

As industrial designers, we constantly strive to find better, faster ways to ideate and iterate. One of the most exciting developments in design workflows recently is leveraging AI tools like MidJourney’s Edit & Retexture functionality to transform basic CAD forms into high-quality visual concepts in minutes. It was a while since I used Midjourney. But thanks to seeing one of the LinkedIn posts by Hector Rodriguez , I was itching to try it. I recently experimented with this approach using a foundational CAD model. I had made this as one of the form explorations through CAD for a coffee machine.I prompted MidJourney to retexture and visualize it in various material and finish combinations. The results? A series of diverse, photorealistic outputs that allows me to explore design possibilities I may not have considered otherwise. This workflow highlights some key strengths: 1. Speeding Up Concept Ideation: AI tools can generate multiple aesthetic directions from a single CAD base almost instantaneously. This means you can explore and test design ideas quickly, without committing hours to detailed rendering or material adjustments in software like Blender or Keyshot. 2. Streamlining CMF Exploration: Traditionally, exploring different colors, materials, and finishes (CMF) can be a long-drawn-out process, requiring meticulous work in rendering software or Photoshop. With AI, you can bypass this step and instantly visualize multiple CMF options. This not only saves significant time but also allows for rapid iteration and refinement. 3. Accelerating Design Evolution: With rapid outputs, you can visualize the potential of your design’s form and materiality in real-world contexts. This allows for informed decision-making early in the process, saving time during later-stage refinements. 4. Enhancing Creative Exploration: By integrating AI tools, we can step beyond our usual design instincts and uncover unexpected design solutions. This not only enriches the process but also pushes boundaries in creativity and innovation. For industrial designers, this hybrid approach—merging CAD fundamentals with AI-enhanced retexturing—opens up new opportunities to iterate faster and more effectively. Once the most promising directions are identified, we can dive into refining the details, ensuring manufacturability, or rendering them perfectly in Blender, Keyshot, or similar tools. This newfound workflow feels like a game-changer to me, especially for balancing creativity with tight deadlines. What do you think about this tool? #industrialdesign #ConceptIdeation #CMF #CMFExploration #productdesign #MidJourney #ai

We’ve all been there..often times stuck in a never-ending loop of repetitive thinking. We all have our patterns of thinking that can become habitual and comfortable. Such thoughts make it difficult to find solutions to our problems. Sometimes, all it takes to break out of that loop and find a creative solution, is to break your thinking pattern. Working through a problem in a different way can help jumpstart the creative process and open up new possibilities. Here are a few things that can help you to break the pattern: 📍 Identify and challenge negative thought patterns that hinder problem-solving. Whether these are thinking patterns are from the past or a case of anxiety.... by identifying them, you take the 1st step to breaking them. 📍 Practice positive self-talk: Replace self-doubt with encouraging and empowering thoughts. Focus on what you can do, instead of what has already been done. Practice creative brainstorming techniques to facilitate this. 📍Embrace a growth mindset: Believe in your ability to learn and adapt, viewing challenges as opportunities for growth. Embrace a growth mindset for continuous learning. Cultivate curiosity and open-mindedness  📍 Seek alternative perspectives: Expand your thinking by considering different viewpoints and exploring diverse solutions. Experiment with different problem-solving approaches.  📍Cultivate creativity: Engage in activities that stimulate your imagination and encourage innovative thinking. Transform your thinking to overcome obstacles and discover effective problem-solving strategies. 📍 Move away from the problem for sometime. Being over involved with the problem tends to inhibit the process of finding a solution. Take a break, take your mind off the problem for a while before jumping back in. 📍 Break the problem into smaller portions. By doing so, it becomes less intimidating than before. It is important to remember that you may not find a perfect solution immediately.

Master the Art of Creative Problem-Solving The most remarkable innovations in history weren't born from conventional thinking. They emerged when someone dared to challenge the status quo. I've observed that extraordinary success comes from looking beyond traditional approaches. Here's what I've learned about developing a creative mindset: 5 Practical Ways to Develop Creative Thinking: 1. Challenge Assumptions Every established practice deserves questioning. The best solutions often emerge when we stop accepting "that's how it's always been done." 2. Switch Perspectives Step into different roles - be the customer, the competitor, or even the product. Each viewpoint reveals new opportunities. 3. Embrace Unusual Ideas Don't dismiss thoughts that seem impractical at first. Often, the most unconventional concepts lead to groundbreaking solutions. 4. Seek New Experiences Broaden your horizons by exploring unfamiliar subjects, connecting with professionals from different fields, and breaking your routine. Fresh experiences spark fresh thinking. 5. Learn from Setbacks Each unsuccessful attempt is a stepping stone to success. Treat failures as valuable feedback that guides you toward better solutions. I can't draw, sing, or paint. Can I be creative? I've always wondered why we tend to associate creativity typically with the arts. For me, creativity is about applying it to any industry and coming up with new ideas. I took a class called #TheStrategist at NYU Shanghai with Professor Adam Brandenburger, to delve deeper into the creation of creative strategies. Key takeaways: #StrategyFromContrast 1. Understand the underlying assumptions of conventional wisdom (A -> B) and attempt to reverse them (B -> A). 2. Observe and perceive differently to think differently. De-familiarizing the familiar is crucial. Regularly ask yourself: What did I learn? And what did I unlearn? #StrategyFromCombination 1. Seek experiences in different fields you're passionate about. Exploring how they can be integrated is fascinating. 2. The people around you and the conversations you have with them significantly influence idea generation. 3. Digging deeper beyond superficialities and understanding the thought processes behind various ideas from other creative strategists helps grasp the idea genealogy. #StrategyFromConstraint 1. Constraints, when viewed from a different angle, can be transformed into strengths. 2. When tasked with being creative, it's challenging to generate diverse ideas, as there could be countless approaches. However, constraints within specific industries, demographics, or finances can stimulate our brains to explore alternative avenues. #StrategyFromContext 1. Engage with diverse individuals and read a variety of literature. Incorporating perspectives from outside your industry can introduce fresh thinking. 2. Utilize analogies—they need not be identical. Analogies can also pertain to modes of thinking and doing. Above all, I learned that #creativity is a habit, and like any habit, it improves with practice. Many thanks to Professor Adam for this class. It has addressed many of my inquiries about strategy. I'm applying these principles to the #peer2peer #admissionsconsulting we're developing, aiming to #democratize access to knowledge about university admissions. P.S: Attached below is a photo of us with Adam during Peter Vesterbacka's visit to NYU Shanghai. Institutions like New York University in #China exemplify how these strategies can be applied effectively in education.

  • The ability to shift strategies or approaches when one solution is not viable is a sign of cognitive flexibility, a key to achieving creative velocity. Insight problems aid in developing cognitive flexibility while promoting lateral thinking by encouraging you to find an unconventional, non-obvious solution to a problem. Reframing a problem can lead to an innovative solution without directly tackling an issue that seems impossible to solve for. Here's an insight problem to practice with: Imagine you are a building manager in a tall office building, and people constantly complain about how slow the elevator is. The complaints have increased, and you’re under pressure to fix the problem. However, after checking the system, you find that your current budget or technology cannot improve the elevator speed. Your task is to reduce the complaints about the elevator’s slowness without investing in expensive upgrades. How would you solve this problem? Framing the problem can open your mind to new possibilities. For example here, the key is to think beyond the direct problem of elevator speed and consider alternative solutions that address the complaints creatively. By focusing on the number of complaints and not the speed of the elevator you open your mind to new ways to address the problem. For example, you could reinvent the elevator ride to make it less tedious. Installing dry-erase whiteboards on the elevator walls might encourage riders to doodle or otherwise engage their imaginations, making the time seem to pass faster. Or you might play music that encourages mindfulness and calm. Adding nature sounds (such as birdsong, flowing water, or rustling leaves) to gentle instrumental music can reduce rider stress and evoke a sense of calm and presence. Insight problems like this stimulate our imagination and help us generate novel ideas. You can ask your GenAI partner to develop them for you to practice with a simple prompt like this: "Create an insight problem for me to solve." If you get stuck, you can learn from the solutions your partner offers and then try again. Practice, practice, practice. #creativity #creativethinking #creativevelocity #creative #productmanagement #innovation

Three simple words can unlock a world of possibilities when you or your team get stuck on solving a problem: “How might we” I’ve found this to be a great tool when leading team meetings or solving stuck points with founders. Framing the conversation around questions like this can unlock creative solutions when no “obvious” solutions exist. Here’s why this works: 1. “How” signals we’re in exploration mode. It reinforces that we don’t have all the answers yet, encouraging multiple, innovative approaches. 2. “Might” suggests flexibility, that there are many paths to explore without committing to one fixed solution. 3. “We” brings in the collective mind. It shifts from individual problem-solving to the inclusive, shared responsibility of the group mind. Start with these simple swaps: “What should I do?” → “How might we…?” “I have no idea.” → “How might we…?” “I’m not sure how to get past this.” → “How might we…?” And some helpful guard rails: - Keep your HMW questions specific to the problem. - Stay broad enough to inspire multiple ideas. - Keep it positive to spark more possibilities. As a leader, I've found that using inclusive, positive language in business discussions where we need to get through a block can help liberate team creativity. Tough love can also help. Making a conscious effort to modulate your language in this way can help move your team past creative impasses and build more positive workspaces.
