Most email problems aren’t creative problems. They’re funnel diagnosis problems. Marketers obsess over the CTA. But performance usually breaks long before the click. If you don’t measure the entire email funnel, you’ll fix the wrong thing. Here’s the real email funnel: 1. Sent → Delivered If it’s not delivered, nothing else matters. Measure: bounce rate, block rate, domain/IP reputation. If you have inbox placement issues, stop rewriting copy. 2. Delivered → Opened Low opens? It’s either inbox placement or subject line resonance. Measure: spam placement rate, inbox placement, open trends by segment. Don’t debate emojis if you’re in spam. 3. Opened → Clicked Now it’s messaging. Measure: CTR, unique clicks, engagement by segment. This is copy, design, clarity. 4. Clicked → Page Visited Measure: link health, load speed, tracking integrity. Broken links quietly destroy revenue. 5. Visited → Conversion Now it’s offer, UX, pricing, trust. Every stage compounds. If you have deliverability problems and you’re debating button color, you’re solving stage 3 while stage 1 is broken. Great email marketers diagnose before they optimize. Where’s your leak?

As someone who has driven over $22M in email revenue, I've had the opportunity to analyze and optimize countless email campaigns. Metrics are the key to understanding what's working and what needs improvement. Let's dive into the critical metrics and how to leverage them for better performance 👉 🌟 Open Rates - This is your first impression metric. A good open rate indicates that your subject lines and preview text are enticing. To improve, experiment with personalization, emojis, and urgency. Track the time of day and day of the week that work best for your audience. 📈 Click Rates - Click rate shows the percentage of people who clicked on a link within your email after opening it. It’s a strong indicator of how compelling your content and CTAs are. To boost click rates, focus on creating clear, actionable buttons, and A/B test different copy and design elements. 💼 Conversion Rates - The ultimate metric! Conversion rate measures the percentage of recipients who completed a desired action, such as making a purchase. This is where the true value of your email marketing is realized. Improve conversion rates by ensuring your landing pages are aligned with your email content and providing a seamless user experience. 🚫 Bounce Rates - A high bounce rate can indicate issues with your email list quality. Monitor and maintain your list regularly by removing invalid or unengaged email addresses. This helps in maintaining a good sender reputation and improves overall deliverability. ❌ Unsubscribe Rates - While unsubscribes are inevitable, tracking this metric can provide insights into how your content resonates with your audience. A sudden spike could signal that your emails are too frequent or not relevant. Use this data to refine your content strategy. 📊 List Growth Rate - It's not just about keeping your current subscribers; growing your list is equally important. Track your list growth rate to ensure you're continually adding new potential customers. Utilize sign-up forms, lead magnets, and social media to attract new subscribers. 💰 ROI Calculation - Ultimately, your email marketing efforts should be contributing to your bottom line. Calculate the ROI of your campaigns by comparing the revenue generated against the costs. This will help you understand the financial impact and justify your marketing spend. Pro Tips: 🎯 Segmentation & Targeting - Segment your audience based on behavior, demographics, or past purchases to send more relevant content. This can significantly improve all your key metrics. 🧩 Personalization - Beyond using first names, personalize content based on user preferences and past interactions. This increases engagement and loyalty. 🔄 Regular Testing & Optimization - Continuously test different elements of your emails, from subject lines to content layout, to find what resonates best with your audience.

Your lead magnet "format" can make or break your conversions. Here's why (plus the most effective format I've found): Quick story: I just chatted with a founder in the leadership industry looking to level up their email marketing game. My first suggestion? Revamp your lead magnet funnel. For context, they currently have an ebook as their "pillar" lead magnet. And after doing a quick audit, I could see the content is great. But there's a problem: eBooks are a terrible way to deliver your lead magnet content. Here's why: 1. Not digestible. Nobody really reads a 20-page PDF anymore. Most people just download them, skim them once, and then never open them again. 2. Lacks trackability. You are not able to track how (and how much) people engage with the PDF. You have no visibility into whether they're actually consuming your content. 3. It's hard to personalize at scale. In the age of AI, real personalization is becoming more and more important. But personalizing a PDF can be very messy from a technical perspective. So with all of this in mind, here's what I recommended: Repackage your lead magnet into a 5-day email course. This will allow you to: 1/ Make the content more digestible and increase the odds that people actually consume it. 5 daily lessons sent via email >>> a 20-page PDF. 2/ Track engagement and get a better sense of whether or not people are really consuming the content. You have open rates, click-through rates, reply rates - all the data you need. 3/ Personalize the content more easily. Most ESPs handle variables and dynamic snippets so you can start to inject some personalization into your emails without a super complex tech setup. 4/ Increase your opt-in rates. From a value proposition standpoint, an email course feels more valuable than an ebook. Which is why, our email course landing pages generally get 30% to 60%+ opt-in rates (depending on the traffic source)... Whereas most lead magnets get 10-20% opt-in rates (if they're crushing it!). We've used email courses to generate millions in revenue across our different verticals - and they work like a charm. So, if you're thinking of creating a new lead magnet in 2026, keep that in mind :) P.S. I created an AI prompt that helps you brainstorm email course ideas based on your specific niche, industry, and offer. Comment "IDEA" and I'll send you a free copy.

If your email marketing partner relies solely on data from Klaviyo when tracking results, they're not taking their job seriously. Let me explain. Many brands rely solely on Klaviyo data when analyzing their campaigns. I get it—it looks convenient. But there's an insane amount of valuable data that it misses, which can impact your decisions and, eventually, the results at their core. Investing in state-of-the-art reporting infrastructure that goes beyond Klaviyo’s native dashboards has been one of the best choices we ever made at Dispatch, and we recommend you do the same. Here are a few examples of how our new tools allow us to drill down 10x deeper and faster, providing insights that fuel our partners' growth. 1. Campaign Performance Our advanced tools offer comprehensive metrics, allowing us to meet smarter decisions to boost engagement and conversions. - Segment Performance: we see how different segments perform in a single campaign and over time. This detailed analysis is impossible with Klaviyo's native reporting. - True Data: we understand how our messaging resonates with each audience, providing a source of truth for segment performance. 2. Flow Analysis We optimize customer journeys with detailed flow performance tracking, beyond what Klaviyo’s dashboards can provide. - Revenue Tracking: we see which flows drive revenue and need improvement. - Engagement Insights: we refine messaging and timing for maximum impact. 3. Segment Performance One of the biggest advantages of our reporting tools is the ability to track and analyze segment performance over time, a feature that Klaviyo lacks. - Segment Analysis: we evaluate how different segments perform in a single campaign and over time. 4. Year-over-Year Trends For seasonality-driven businesses, tracking trends year-over-year is crucial. Our tools provide deeper insights for better planning. - Seasonal Insights: we plan campaigns for peak seasons with detailed trend analysis. - Performance Comparison: we identify growth areas and opportunities by comparing current and past performance. Our reporting tools allow us to go beyond basic metrics and provide a complete picture of your marketing performance. - Monitor Campaigns: we track the performance of all your campaigns and lists in a single dashboard. Review successes and monitor list and segment growth. - Flexible Time Frames: we analyze campaign metrics over any time frame, allowing for customized performance analysis. - Performance Snapshots: we quickly filter and view metrics for specific campaigns, like Black Friday sales, with detailed insights into open rates, click-through rates, and revenue. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. If you need any help leveraging your data properly to increase the incremental revenue driven from email and SMS marketing, shoot me a DM. We've audited well over 100 Klaviyo accounts, showing brands exactly where the leaks are.
