Let the group determine what to focus on. Let the group determine the pace. Let the group determine what feels comfortable—and what feels too uncomfortable. In this approach, the leader's compass sits outside themselves. They become facilitators of harmony rather than stewards of direction. The intentions are good. They value connection, teamwork, and autonomy. They empathize deeply. But when the work gets difficult, empathy becomes entanglement. Their instinct points one way, but the expressed fears and worries of their colleagues pull them back. They fear disrupting the togetherness they were chosen to preserve. In these moments, they aren't servant leaders. They are servants—to fear, to discomfort, and sometimes to well-practiced victimization. Strong leadership requires a strong point of view. Without it, strategy drifts—waiting for someone else to set the course. A leader must call out what needs to be accomplished. Not in vague, noble statements—"We'll improve patient care"—but in focused, concrete direction: We will decrease ED wait times. We will conduct huddles during rounds. We will focus on the things we can control. This clarity becomes the beacon. It sets direction for the teamwork, the togetherness, and the autonomy that follow.
