    The 'Out of Sight, Out of Mind' Trap: How to Conquer the Distance Google is a global company with offices all over the world, and while this diversity is a strength, it also presents unique challenges for communication and collaboration. Especially when your key stakeholders and decision-makers are continents away! Those hallway conversations, spontaneous coffee chats, and quick desk drop-bys that teams at HQ take for granted? Yeah, those aren't happening when you're separated by oceans and time zones. And that can lead to a disconnect. Your team's amazing work might get overlooked, your challenges might go unnoticed, and your stakeholders might feel out of the loop. But fear not, fellow remote leads! Here are a few strategies I've learned along the way: ‣ Tailor your communication approach: Every leader has their preferred communication style. Some love detailed reports, others prefer concise bullet points, and some just want the TL;DR. It's your job to adapt and deliver information in the way they'll best receive it. ‣ Embrace Radical Transparency: The worst thing that can happen is your leadership feeling blindsided by a problem or a missed deadline. Over-communicate! Share updates regularly, highlight both wins and challenges, and don't be afraid to ask for help when needed. ‣ Educate Your Leads: Help them understand the unique challenges of leading a remote team in a different location. Explain why you might need more proactive communication or different approaches to stay connected and aligned. ‣ Build Relationships Beyond Email: Travel when possible. Occasional visits to the main office can be invaluable for building relationships and understanding the nuances of the company culture. ‣ Celebrate Wins: Make sure your stakeholders are aware of your team's accomplishments, both big and small. This reinforces the value of your team and keeps them top-of-mind. ‣ Iterate and Improve: What works for one lead might not work for another. Experiment with different communication styles, ask for feedback, and continuously refine your approach. Leading a local team in a remote site requires extra effort and intention. By mastering the art of communication and building strong relationships with your stakeholders, you can ensure your team's success, no matter where you are in the world!     To keep a virtual team connected, the fix isn’t “more meetings.” It’s shared purpose. Clear alignment. And strategic shots of connection. Distributed and remote teams “transacting” with each other instead of truly collaborating. 🧭 The solution starts with defining how we work together. → That’s why I recommend every team create a Team Working Agreement.     I know I'm a few weeks late 😎 — Amazon Quick Suite launched in early October—but I wanted to get my hands dirty first. After building custom agents, analyzing IPO documents, and testing workflows, I can say: this is a game-changer, a "chief of staff" you wish you had and could not afford 😁 !! 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗦𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀: An agentic AI teammate combining research, BI, and automation in one workspace. Think: data analyst, researcher, and automation engineer—all accessible through natural language. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱: ① 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 - Uploaded a 200+ page IPO prospectus, yes THE "Lenskart" one, and no, I am not sharing the assessment 🤐 Got structured analysis with financials, market positioning, risk assessment, charts, and citations in minutes. Work that normally takes days. ② 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 - Built dashboards conversationally. "Show me sales by region" → publication-ready pie charts with insights, trends, and recommendations. Zero code. ③ 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 - Created contextual workspaces. Upload documents, connect data—AI agents instantly understand and reference everything automatically. ④ 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀 - Pre-built workflows: RFP responses, onboarding, job descriptions. Or create custom flows in plain English—no coding required, I created an "LinkedIn post flow assistant" to help me with my posts. ⑤ 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 - Built an AWS Developer Assistant connected to MCP servers for real-time documentation. Define expertise, connect sources, deploy. I was in an "investment" flow, I again used the upcoming "Pine Labs" red herring document !! ⑥ 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 - 50+ connectors: Salesforce, ServiceNow, Slack, Microsoft 365, Google Drive, SAP, Zendesk. Quick Suite also has a nice browser extension Note: I didn't get to test Quick Automate,its designed for enterprise-scale process automation—think insurance claims processing, employee onboarding or like an "agentic cron job" with hundreds of steps. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝗱𝗴𝗲: Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration lets custom agents connect to ANY server—AWS docs, internal knowledge bases, CRMs, proprietary databases. Create domain-specific AI teammates that understand your business context.     The remote work era demands a new approach to team leadership. With distributed work and hybrid setups becoming the norm, it’s time to re-evaluate traditional frameworks. Inspired by Patrick Lencioni’s "Five Dysfunctions of a Team," I adapted it for remote teams—because the rules have changed. 👀 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟱 𝗗𝘆𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀: 1️⃣ 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗚𝗮𝗽 Trust is essential in remote setups but harder to build without regular face-to-face time. Consistency, transparency, and empathy are critical to bridge the trust gap. 2️⃣ 𝗩𝗶𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 In virtual settings, it’s easy to skip tough conversations. Healthy conflict is essential for innovation—encourage open channels for feedback and constructive debate. 3️⃣ 𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 & 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 Misalignments are common without a shared space. Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and track progress consistently to build ownership. 5️⃣ 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀 Digital tools create constant distractions, making it easy to lose sight of team goals.     Miscommunication in remote teams isn't just annoying - it's expensive. A project that should take two weeks stretches to six. A simple feature becomes a complete rebuild. Team morale drops because everyone feels like they're working in isolation. I see this pattern constantly with Indonesia's remote teams. The problem isn't language barriers or time zones. It's assuming everyone interprets communication the same way. What "sounds clear" to someone in Singapore might feel completely different to someone in Jakarta. The hidden costs add up: → Rework because requirements weren't clear → Missed deadlines from assumptions → Team frustration leading to turnover → Client relationships suffering from inconsistent delivery But here's what actually works: Build emotional trust and skill trust from day one - something HarvardX emphasizes in remote leadership. During my work in simon-systems.com, I involve my core team in final-stage interviews. When candidates present their case study solutions, my team listens and gives their input. If they feel they can carry this person with them, I hire. This approach prevents miscommunication before it starts. Your team already has buy-in on new hires. Write everything down, even if it feels excessive. "We discussed this on the call" doesn't help when someone needs clarity. Confirm understanding, don't assume it. "Does this make sense?" gets different answers than "Can you walk me through your approach?" a mistake I learn expensively. Create feedback loops that work across cultures. Some team members will speak up immediately, others need safe spaces to raise concerns. Invest in relationship building beyond work tasks. Understanding how your teammates communicate personally helps with professional collaboration. Good remote communication isn't about more meetings. It's about clearer systems that work for everyone on your team.     There's a question I keep hearing: "Should I invest in AI tools or hire a virtual assistant?" My answer? That's the wrong question. AI excels at systematic, repetitive work. Email automation, social media scheduling, and report generation. These are tasks that follow patterns and don't require human judgment. Virtual assistants excel at everything AI can't do. Customer relationships, personalized communication, content that reflects your brand voice, and team coordination. The most efficient operations I'm seeing right now aren't choosing one over the other. They're strategically deploying both. AI handles the predictable workflows. VAs handle the nuanced, relationship-driven work. You can be 10x more effective on a remote team if you master a few key habits: ✅ Over-communicate, but be concise Clarity matters more than frequency. Say what’s needed, and say it clearly. ✅ Align before you act Check for shared understanding before diving into big tasks. Nothing wastes time like misaligned assumptions. ✅ Make your work visible Use docs, updates, or async tools to show progress—even when no one’s asking. ✅ Respect time zones (and your own time) Be flexible, but not a doormat.     Today Glide becomes a whole new beast with the beta release of ⚡ Workflows–eerily powerful automations, perfectly integrated with Glide, continuing in our tradition of elegant tools with understated power. All of our customers pair Glide with a third-party automation tool like Zapier or Make, which are great for connecting your app to a wide array of existing services, but awkward for data-intensive automations that our customers want to achieve for a few reasons: 1. Shared data and compute: previously, customers implemented the same logic in Glide & the automation tool, drastically increasing maintenance cost. Glide Workflows have direct access to the same tables and computations as your apps, so your interfaces and automations remain in lockstep. 2. Zapier and Make are optimized for processing single events, connecting tool A to tool B. Glide Workflows are designed for operations on tables and batch data; for example, it's easy to loop over all Orders, then all Items per Order, and then finally complete a summary step. Looping is absent, primitive, or convoluted in these other tools. 3. No-code computations as steps. Glide Workflows has access to Glide's set of powerful computational primitives, making it simple to run AI, call APIs, manipulate numbers and text, without using any formulas or code.
