Use low fidelity sketches and storyboards when you need speed and divergent thinking. They help teams externalize ideas, reason about user goals, and map flows before pixels appear. They are deliberately rough to avoid premature polish. Move to click through wireframes in Figma when the question is structure and navigation. Validate information architecture, menu depth, labeling, and path efficiency while changes are still cheap. When the feel of interaction matters, use interactive digital prototypes to evaluate micro interactions, timing, and visual polish. Treat them as validation instruments, not trophies. Plan change criteria up front so attachment to a pretty artifact does not silence real feedback. Some questions require real performance and materials. Coded prototypes and functional hardware mockups tell you about latency, reliability, durability, ergonomics, and safety. In medical devices and other regulated domains, high fidelity functional and contextual testing is expected for Human Factors validation. Not every question lives on screens. The simplest ways to test ideas without burning through cash or dev resources. The HADI Cycle: Hypothesis, Action, Data, Insight. Here’s how it works: >> HYPOTHESIS Start with an educated guess. This comes from your experience. Maybe it's a feature your customers might love, or a new approach to streamline operations. >> ACTION Take a small step to test it. No need to build the whole thing yet—manual processes over MVPs. >> DATA Then, gather feedback. Watch how your customers react. Do they actually use it? Do they care? Did they get value? >> INSIGHT Finally, analyse the results. Did it work? What did you learn? What do you need to learn next? The beauty of the HADI cycle is it gives you the confidence to move forward without risking time, energy, or budget on things nobody wants. The real win here? You learn either way—whether it succeeds or flops. And those insights shape every next move. So if you’re debating a new feature or strategy… Run it through the HADI cycle first. Test small.     1) Read backend architecture docs, distributed systems papers, or open-source repo READMEs 2) Code out the core logic of a backend feature (API endpoint, async worker, or DB interaction) 3) Check if the code’s flow matches the system design and theoretical behavior 4) Note down the trade-offs, bottlenecks, and edge cases you observe 5) List practical scenarios where this pattern or technique actually adds value (e.g., improves latency, reduces downtime, scales horizontally) 6) Pause, step away, give your brain a buffer before you revisit 7) See if this connects to earlier backend projects or patterns (microservices, caching, message queues), and consider what future scaling or reliability issues it might impact That’s how you connect dots, between what’s written, what’s built, and what’s possible. Great Engineering Ideas don’t drop out of the sky. They’re built by constantly stress-testing what you know, against what the system demands.     If you want to build a unique project, don’t start with tools. Start with a problem. Pick a real problem from your own work, your team, or your circle. Something you see repeatedly. Something people complain about. Then: - Research how the problem is handled today - Explore existing tools and solutions - Identify what’s missing, what’s painful, and what users keep complaining about (social media is gold for this) - Look at recent research or emerging approaches to the same problem Only after that, design your solution. This is usually how I work: - Problem first - Tool comparison and gap analysis - User pain points from real conversations and posts - Research papers and recent experiments - Then combine everything into one focused project I use multiple tools for research and cross-validation not to copy ideas, but to see blind spots and contradictions: Perplexity, OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and others The goal isn’t to build something flashy. The goal is to build something useful, grounded, and defensible. We all learn about Design Thinking as a standalone tool, but there's MUCH MORE to it. Integrating Design Thinking, Lean UX, and Agile methodologies creates a powerful framework for driving user-centric innovation. Here's how it works: → Design Thinking: for deep empathy and problem definition → Lean UX: for rapid prototyping and validation → Agile: for iterative development and delivery ... And what happens when each is missing? • Without Design Thinking = "Misunderstanding" • Without Lean UX = "Wasted Effort" • Without Agile = "Stagnation" Combining these methodologies offers a holistic approach.     Most engineering teams treat experiments like major projects: → 3-week planning cycles → Cross-functional approvals → Comprehensive documentation before starting → Full implementation before evaluating The highest-performing teams do the opposite. Yesterday I explained why experiments can't fail. Today Part 2: how to run them faster. SMALL EXPERIMENTS → BIG INSIGHTS The best experiments aren't sprawling projects. They're ruthlessly constrained. Here's the framework I use: 1️⃣ Keep it short (1–2 days max) If it takes longer, the scope is off. The goal isn't to build solutions. The goal is to answer specific questions. 2️⃣ Use a Designed Experiment (DOE) Don't just tweak one factor at a time. Explore the design space. Look for interactions. This saves time, resources, and uncovers what really drives outcomes. 3️⃣ Design for learning, not perfection The win isn't solving the whole problem. It's learning something that helps you solve it smarter next time. 👉 Small experiments compound. Each one builds clarity, confidence, and momentum. Let me show you what this looks like in practice: ⏭️ Marketing: Testing email subject lines rather than redesigning the entire marketing campaign ⏭️ Manufacturing: Adjusting machine speed and temperature for one batch to see which combination reduces defects ⏭️ Team productivity: Trialing a 15‑minute daily stand‑up for one week to test if communication improves ⏭️ Product design: Offering two prototype features to a small user group and observing which one they naturally adopt Here's the counterintuitive part: Small experiments actually produce better solutions than big ones.
