That means: → Not assuming perfect training → Not relying on memory under pressure → Not counting on people to read the manual Human-centered design isn’t optional. It’s the foundation of safe use. 13 principles to keep in mind when designing a medical device: 1. Clinicians often lack full training due to time constraints 2. Even trained users forget, especially for rarely used devices 3. “Information for safety” is a fallback, not a first line of defense 4. Instructions for use (IFUs) are often skipped 5. People get interrupted, distracted, or forget critical steps 6. Deliver essential information at the right moment, during the task 7. Timely prompts guide safe, effective use 8. Devices are used in noisy, high-pressure environments 9. Users face fatigue, stress, and multitasking 10. Too many warnings signal poor design 11. Warnings must never replace good design 12.     Medical checkups can be mentally and physically stressful for patients. Will it hurt? How long will it take? Then there's the uncertainty before the diagnosis. But simply not going is not an option. That's why we do everything we can to make examinations as comfortable as possible for patients. It starts with the human-centered design of our modalities. Beginning in the development phase, we already take the patient's perspective into account, even working together to find the best solution. We also collaborate closely with the professionals who will be running the device for hours. For these experts, a safe, comfortable, and easy-to-operate workplace is essential. This is what human-centered innovation means to us at Siemens Healthineers: Our innovations are designed for patients and healthcare professionals alike – for everyone, everywhere, sustainably. These individuals are either in a personally sensitive situation – or it’s their job and passion to help others. For both groups, human-centered design is key to strengthening trust and enhancing the human side of healthcare. A solution's impact on a clinical workflow isn't determined by the range of technical functions it offers, but rather by how it provides those functions in an understandable, accessible, and practical way. Take mammography as an example – a particularly sensitive screening that is extremely important in our joint fight against cancer. After all, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer for half of humanity: Every minute, four women worldwide are diagnosed with this disease. Early detection is crucial, which is why the examination must not be daunting. As studies indicate, women with perceived pain or unpleasantness were more likely to avoid future mammograms. For this reason, designing medical devices to create a calming environment and promote a sense of safety for patients plays an important role in healthcare delivery.

    We keep saying AI will revolutionise healthcare. But what if the revolution is human-first? After years advising HealthTech founders, I’ve noticed a pattern: The technology is rarely the barrier. Adoption is. You can have the smartest algorithms in the world, but if clinicians don’t trust them, or patients don’t feel seen by them, the system fails. AI can process data at unimaginable speed. What it can’t do — yet — is deliver empathy, context, or care. And that’s where the next generation of founders must focus: designing intelligence that augments humans, not replaces them. The MIT × Roche report on scaling integrated digital health highlighted something profound, the companies that succeed aren’t the most technical. They’re the most collaborative. They design with clinicians, listen to regulators, and test in real-world care environments. In other words: they build trust before traction. I saw this firsthand when supporting a digital wellness platform. Their AI could detect emotional cues in voice patterns, but what won enterprise clients wasn’t the accuracy, it was the empathy in the experience. The tech didn’t talk at people; it talked with them. Healthcare is still, at its core, a human relationship. If we want AI to transform outcomes, we must embed humanity into its code: transparency, explainability, accountability. Technology should extend clinicians’ capacity for compassion, not erode it. The real future of digital health won’t be machines replacing medicine; it’ll be humans, enhanced by design.     Three months into my MSc at King's College London. And I've noticed something interesting about how Clinical Engineering is taught. It's not what I expected. I thought it would be pure technical training. Circuit diagrams. Equipment specifications. Engineering calculations. And yes, we learn all of that. But there's something else woven through every single module. Patient-centered thinking. Let me show you what I mean: In Healthcare System Design, we don't just learn how hospitals are structured. We learn WHY they're structured that way—and how engineering decisions impact patient flow, wait times, and outcomes. In anatomy and physiology, we don't just memorise body systems. We learn how medical devices interact with those systems—and what happens when the engineering doesn't account for human variability. In clinical measurements, we don't just study sensors and data. We learn how inaccurate measurements can lead to misdiagnosis—and how Clinical Engineers ensure reliability. Every technical concept connects back to one question: "How does this impact the patient?" And I think that's what makes Clinical Engineering different from traditional engineering. We're not designing products. We're designing solutions for human lives. The most interesting part? My classmates come from such different backgrounds. Physics graduates. Biomedical engineers. Software engineers. But we're all learning the same thing: Technical excellence means nothing if it doesn't translate to better patient care. That's the mindset shift I'm experiencing. It's not enough to build something that works. It has to work for real people. In real clinical settings. With real consequences. If you're studying engineering and considering healthcare.     $560M in losses. Four states shut down. The solution wasn't in the data. It was in watching nurses scribble patient notes on their scrubs. 2001 => US healthcare was broken. Still is, honestly. But Kaiser cracked something most companies miss. They stopped staring at dashboards. Started staring at humans. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝟭𝟮-𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁𝘀. Asked nurses to draw self-portraits of their workday. (They drew themselves with sad faces.) Sat with patients during shift changes. This is design thinking before it had a fancy name. Empathize. Observe. Understand the human problem first. What they discovered? Three invisible problems killing their system. Problems so obvious once you saw them, you'd wonder how anyone missed them. The breakthrough: Systems were designed for processes, not for the humans using them.     Most people think innovation in healthcare is about big machines, cutting-edge drugs, or complex technology. But sometimes, it starts with something as simple as tapioca water in a Kerala kitchen. Malavika Byju, a 24-year-old design graduate from Kochi, while studying at NID Ahmedabad, asked herself a question that changed everything: What if this waste starch from tapioca could replace harmful hospital plastic? Her experiments led to biodegradable ECG electrodes ones that decompose in weeks instead of polluting landfills for decades. But Malavika didn’t stop there. During hospital visits, she saw how uncomfortable women felt while undressing for ECG tests. Instead of ignoring it, she designed a gown with velcro-secured pockets so sensors could be placed without removing clothes. Recognition followed: an NID Ford Foundation Grant, support from the National Design Business Incubator, and even a Design Registration Certificate from the Patent Office of India. Her dream? To take this research global with a PhD and make hospital care both sustainable and kinder. Because real innovation doesn’t just solve technical problems. It solves human ones.     How a clinician interacts with an AI device matters as much as how accurate that device is, yet regulatory frameworks still don't fully account for this. 1️⃣ AI-enabled medical devices introduce unique risks because their outputs are probabilistic, often unexplainable, and can adapt over time. 2️⃣ Seven human factors risks are identified: misperception, trust miscalibration, automation bias, deskilling, technostress, indication creep, and change-related errors. 3️⃣ Automation bias grows when the boundary between human and machine responsibility is unclear. 4️⃣ Heavy AI reliance can erode clinical skills, leaving clinicians less able to respond when automation fails or behaves unexpectedly. 5️⃣ Indication creep occurs when AI tools drift outside their validated populations or use cases, creating unrecognized safety risks. 6️⃣ Existing usability standards were built for static devices and fall short for adaptive AI systems. 7️⃣ Seven guidance points address these risks, covering user definition, trust design, workflow integration, training, safe fallbacks, monitoring, and update communication. 8️⃣ These guidance points slot into existing regulatory documentation requirements, adding no new burden on manufacturers. 9️⃣ Postmarket surveillance must expand to track overreliance, automation bias, and workflow friction, not just technical performance. 🔟 Accountability must be explicitly shared between manufacturers, health systems, and assessors, or safety gaps will emerge. ✍🏻 Rebecca Mathias, Anne Schmitt, Mateo Campos, Baptiste Vasey, Sebastian Lorenz, Peter McCulloch, Stephen Gilbert.     We serve people at their most vulnerable in healthcare - during crisis, uncertainty, and profound life changes. Human-centered design lets us create spaces, operations, and technologies intentionally designed for those circumstances instead of treating vulnerability as an afterthought. Human-centered design starts with deeply understanding people's experiences before designing anything. You observe how people actually move through spaces and systems. You listen to what matters to patients, families, and staff. You test your assumptions. You iterate based on real feedback. The goal is making things work for humans under real conditions. Why Healthcare Is Unique In healthcare, people are anxious, overwhelmed, navigating unfamiliar systems while managing fear and uncertainty. Their needs evolve as their conditions change. The same patient requires different support during diagnosis than during chronic management. Care teams have deep clinical expertise, but patients and families experience things care teams can't fully see. The night shift works differently than day shift. The moments between clinical encounters - the waiting, the processing, the quiet conversations - often matter as much as the medical interventions themselves. Assumptions in this context are expensive. What seems logical to us might create confusion for patients. What works on paper might fail when people are exhausted or scared. What It Requires Human-centered design is a discipline, not a checklist: + Observing across time - 2am looks different than 2pm + Listening to multiple perspectives - patients, families, all staff roles + Testing before committing to permanent solutions + Designing for behavior under stress, not ideal conditions + Understanding that transformation requires space changes, operational changes, and behavioral changes to align Why It Matters Human-centered design creates solutions that actually work - not just at ribbon cutting, but years later when real life takes over. It builds trust. It supports both clinical excellence and human dignity. Healthcare spaces and systems shape some of life's most important moments.
