    Two days ago we saw something that quietly marks a big step forward in unmanned aviation‼️ Two #Kizilelma UAVs flew in close #autonomous #formation, not scripted, not remotely piloted into position, but managing their relative motion on their own. It looks smooth and almost simple from the outside, but anyone who has worked on guidance, #navigation or control knows how much #complexity is hidden behind that apparent ease. What really stands out to me is the challenge of relative navigation. Flying in formation is not about knowing where you are in the world, it is about knowing where the other aircraft is with respect to you, continuously and with very small errors. #Timing becomes absolutely critical here. Longitudinal spacing errors grow directly with latency, so even small delays in sensing, estimation or communication can turn into meters of error very quickly if they are not carefully managed. Getting full 360 degree awareness makes this even harder, as relying purely on onboard sensors for all directions is expensive and demanding in terms of weight, power and integration. Covering every angle robustly means multiple sensing modalities and a lot of processing, which is not always compatible with a compact, high performance air vehicle. That is why purely sensor based relative navigation is rarely enough on its own. My guess is that a big part of the relative navigation solution here relies on high precision GNSS, very likely #RTK with a moving baseline, combined with tight #inertial #coupling and continuous intra flight communications. Sharing state information between vehicles allows them to close the loop faster and reduce relative uncertainty in a way a single platform cannot achieve alone. For me, this flight is not just a demo, it’s a clear signal that cooperative autonomy and distributed air systems are maturing, step by step, into something operationally credible. #relative #navigation #formation #flight #control

  • Today, Science Robotics has published our work on the first drone performing fully #neuromorphic vision and control for autonomous flight! 🥳 Deep neural networks have led to amazing progress in Artificial Intelligence and promise to be a game-changer as well for autonomous robots 🤖. A major challenge is that the computing hardware for running deep neural networks can still be quite heavy and power consuming. This is particularly problematic for small robots like lightweight drones, for which most deep nets are currently out of reach. A new type of neuromorphic hardware draws inspiration from the efficiency of animal eyes 👁 and brains 🧠. Neuromorphic cameras do not record images at a fixed frame rate, but instead have the pixels track the brightness over time, sending a signal only when the brightness changes. These signals can now be sent to a neuromorphic processor, in which the neurons communicate with each other via binary spikes, simplifying calculations. The resulting asynchronous, sparse sensing and processing promises to be both quick and energy efficient! 🔋 In our article, we investigated how a spiking neural network (#SNN) can be trained and deployed on a neuromorphic processor for perceiving and controlling drone flight 🚁. Specifically, we split the network in two. First, we trained an SNN to transform the signals from a downward looking neuromorphic camera to estimates of the drone’s own motion. This network was trained on data coming from our drone itself, with self-supervised learning. Second, we used an artificial evolution 🦠🐒🚶♂️ to train another SNN for controlling a simulated drone. This network transformed the simulated drone’s motion into motor commands such as the drone’s orientation. We then merged the two SNNs 👩🏻🤝👩🏻 and deployed the resulting network on Intel Labs’ neuromorphic research chip "Loihi". The merged network immediately worked on the drone, successfully bridging the reality gap. Moreover, the results highlight the promises of neuromorphic sensing and processing: The network ran 10-64x faster 🏎💨 than a comparable network on a traditional embedded GPU and used 3x less energy. Revealed at the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) conference in Washington, D.C., the U-Hawk transforms one of America’s most battle-proven aircraft into a next-generation platform capable of operating without a pilot. Key Developments • From Concept to Reality in 10 Months: Sikorsky engineered and built the U-Hawk in record time, moving from concept to display in just under a year.     A big simulation milestone today! Over the past few sessions, I’ve been working through the full pipeline of getting a quadcopter to fly a scripted mission entirely in software — combining: 🔹 ArduPilot SITL 🔹 MAVProxy + MAVLink scripting 🔹 Custom Python mission logic 🔹 PyBullet 3D visualization 🔹 URDF-based Iris model simulation Today, everything came together. ✈️ What we achieved 1️⃣ SITL launched cleanly with MAVProxy We brought up ArduCopter SITL with working GPS, EKF alignment, link health, and clean console output. 2️⃣ Wrote a custom MAVLink autonomous script The Python script: Connects to SITL Arms Takes off to 5 m Flies a perfect 10 m × 10 m square in LOCAL_NED Lands and disarms automatically Exactly like an autonomous drone test flight — but fully simulated. 3️⃣ Integrated PyBullet physics + Iris URDF We imported the Iris quadcopter URDF into PyBullet, fixed pathing issues, and rendered a real-time 3D visualization of the drone while the MAVLink mission executed. Seeing the drone fly the mission and watching a PyBullet model in the same loop was a breakthrough! 4️⃣ End-to-end mission success The simulation successfully: ✔ Connected ✔ Armed ✔ Took off ✔ Navigated to all 4 square waypoints ✔ Landed & disarmed ✔ Showed the Iris model in PyBullet This gives me a full closed-loop test environment before moving to hardware or field tests. 🧩 Why this matters This pipeline will help with: 🔸 Rapid prototyping of flight behaviors 🔸 Testing heavy-lift concepts without risk 🔸 Iterating new mission logic 🔸 Validating autonomy before real-world deployment 🔸 Future integration with Gazebo or custom airframe models It’s a huge step toward the simulation stack required for larger drone development. 🙌 Acknowledgments A big thank you to the open-source communities around ArduPilot, MAVLink, and PyBullet.     The U.S. Army has moved closer to autonomous flight after a CH-47F Chinook successfully completed its first fully automated approach and landing with no pilot input. The test used Boeing’s Approach-to-X (A2X) software along with an upgraded Digital Automated Flight Control System. The helicopter was able to land precisely on its own, even in real-world conditions. This system doesn’t replace pilots. Instead, it supports them by reducing workload and improving accuracy. Pilots still set key details like the landing zone and descent path, and they can take control at any time. Using real-time data, the system adjusts the helicopter’s path during descent. This helps it operate in difficult environments, including at night or in low visibility. So far, the system has completed more than 150 automated landings with an accuracy of under 5 feet (about 1.5 meters), including descents from a 100-foot hover to the ground. The Army plans to introduce the first units equipped with this system by 2028, as part of a broader effort to upgrade existing aircraft with advanced autonomy features. #USArmy #Helicopter #Autonomous #Technology #AI
