Preloaded tablets & regional language apps – Preloaded tablets with offline apps like Kolibri and StoryWeaver are transformative for rural schools lacking internet access. Kolibri provides a vast library of educational content, videos, lessons, and interactive exercises on low-cost tablets and computers, making quality learning resources accessible anywhere. StoryWeaver offers a collection of children's books in multiple regional languages that can be downloaded and printed, allowing teachers to engage young readers in their native languages and foster a love for reading. 2.     The MVNO Model: A Game Changer for Connecting Brazil's Schools Brazil's digital landscape presents a stark contrast. While 5G and Ai are becoming increasingly common in its bustling urban centers, a significant portion of remote areas, including over 2,300 schools, have only recently gained access to basic electricity, a fundamental requirement for internet connectivity. @Nuh! Digital, a specialized connectivity provider for the education sector, has made a pivotal move by becoming an mobile virtual network operator (#MVNO) and this strategic shift is proving instrumental in bridging Brazil's digital divide, particularly for its educational institutions. The #MVNOmodel offers substantial advantages. By avoiding the capital expenditure of building and maintaining a physical network, MVNOs operate with a leaner cost structure, enabling them to offer more affordable plans, which is crucial for reaching underserved populations and public institutions. Unlike large MNOs that focus on broad-market products, MVNOs specialize in niche markets; Nuh! Digital exemplifies this by focusing exclusively on connecting schools and students and specific educational needs. For Nuhdigital, this translates into a deep understanding of the challenges faced by remote schools and a commitment to providing effective solutions. Nuh! Digital's CEO Laerte Magalhães explains, becoming an MVNO means we can now directly engage in public tenders, granting the company greater autonomy to participate in government programs and secure contracts for large-scale digital inclusion initiatives such as "Internet Brasil" and "Aprender Conectado." The MVNO model also provides Nuh! Digital with the autonomy to innovate with solutions like with a Danish signal amplifier for extended reach. "We tested a Danish signal amplifier that reaches up to 100 km. It could be an alternative to satellite," explained Magalhães. By leveraging existing network infrastructure, Nuh! Digital is able to bring connectivity to areas where traditional fixed-line broadband may not be viable or cost-effective. Their "on-demand" approach, where they assess the closest fiber point and then utilize a combination of fiber optics, radio, fixed wireless access, and even satellite for the most remote locations, is a testament to the MVNO model's adaptability. The provision of mobile data SIMs, which primarily benefit students, also has a ripple effect, as it extends internet access to entire families in many low-income households.     HOW HAS STARLINK INTERNET REVOLUTIONIZED UNIVERSAL EDUCATION IN RWANDA? In mid-2023, Rwanda launched Starlink in 50 schools, bringing online learning to over 18,000 students. Thanks to Elon Musk, this initiative is helping bridge the digital divide and ensure universal access to education, particularly in rural areas. More than a year after its introduction, the Minister of ICT, Paula Ingabire, highlighted that Starlink has transformed not only education but also community connectivity. This initiative has had a significant impact, boosting online learning and linking rural areas to broader digital opportunities. Collaborating with stakeholders like the Rwanda Information Society Authority (RISA) and the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, Starlink connectivity reaches schools with limited internet infrastructure. With 2TB of monthly capacity, schools now have access to smart classrooms, benefiting the surrounding communities. The deployment of Starlink, particularly in remote areas, shows how easily accessible internet is breaking down logistical barriers. Its effectiveness in areas where traditional broadband is costly has made education and information much more accessible to underserved populations. Initially serving over 15,000 people, the pilot program has provided a wealth of online resources and learning tools, contributing to both education and community development. Families and students can now access essential services and digital opportunities, transforming their everyday lives. Building on the pilot's success, Starlink is now expanding to healthcare facilities, further showcasing its capacity. With fast and reliable internet, 40 health centers are set to benefit, improving medical services and the overall digital infrastructure of Rwanda’s public institutions. Minister Paula Ingabire affirmed that Starlink’s impact aligns with national objectives. By the end of 2024, every school in Rwanda will have reliable internet access. This will enable digital learning and research in even the most remote areas, equipping students with critical skills for the future. At Groupe Scolaire Gaseke in Northern Rwanda, students now participate in digital labs and access tools they never dreamed possible. This digital transformation is also taking root on remote islands, connecting schools like G.S Saint-Pierre Nkombo to global learning opportunities. Students like Alpha Royale Gikundiro and Celine Umwari have seen their education transformed by Starlink. With easier access to resources, they now perform better in class and can dream bigger, pursuing ambitious career goals made possible through reliable internet access.
