Here's what makes this powerful: once you emit a Business Event from a Notebook or User Data Function, multiple consumers can respond independently and in parallel. A single event can trigger an Activator alert, kick off a Spark job for root cause analysis, create a service ticket via Power Automate, and feed context to an AI model — all at the same time. Events are governed through the Schema Registry in Real-Time Hub, giving you versioned schemas, a shared business language, and protection against schema drift as you scale. The architecture is fully decoupled. Add new consumers without changing the publisher. Teams can introduce analytics pipelines, automation, or external integrations independently.     What happens when AI agents reason and take action over real-time events instead of working from delayed snapshots? Excited to share our latest hands-on tutorial: "Building an event-driven agentic AI system with Apache Kafka on Confluent Cloud, IBM watsonx Orchestrate, with the help of IBM Bob" on IBM Developer, co-authored with Moisés Domínguez. Real-time events change the game. When agents can observe what is happening as it happens, they can reason with the freshest operational truth and respond with the right business context. This tutorial shows a practical pattern for that: ⦿ Apache Kafka topics on Confluent Cloud as the real-time event backbone. ⦿ ksqlDB stream processing to keep an always up-to-date "current state" topic as events arrive. ⦿ watsonx Orchestrate multi-agents to consume live signals and coordinate decisions. ⦿ Agentic RAG to enrich real-time events with context from enterprise documents. ⦿ Bob as software development partner to speed up everything from Kafka and ksqlDB configuration, to publishing events, to building MCP tools and watsonx Orchestrate agents This unlocks agent behavior that is faster, more explainable, and more context-aware, especially for retail (as shown in the tutorial), operations, risk, supply chain, banking, insurance, customer service, and IT.     How do we build data pipelines that don't break under pressure? A pipeline that not only scales but is also resilient to failure? I've been designing a solution using an Event-Driven Architecture (EDA) on AWS, and it directly tackles these challenges. This architecture's goal is to move data from an external CRM, through a processing-and-optimization phase, and into a Redshift data warehouse, all while being fully automated and fault-tolerant. Here is the step-by-step flow: 1. Ingestion & Event Trigger: The pipeline kicks off when a raw .csv file lands in an S3 bucket. This action immediately triggers an s3:ObjectCreated event, which is sent to a central EventBridge bus. 2. The Decoupling "Firewall": This is where the magic happens. A rule on EventBridge routes the new file event to an SQS Queue. This queue acts as a crucial buffer. It doesn't matter if we get 10 files or 10,000, the queue holds them, preventing the system from being overwhelmed. 3. Intelligent Transformation: A "Transform Lambda" polls this queue for jobs. When it finds one, it retrieves the raw CSV, transforms it into the highly-optimized Parquet format, and saves it to a separate 'processed' S3 bucket. 4. The Event Chain: The new Parquet file's creation triggers its own custom event ("ParquetFile.Created") back to the EventBridge bus. A second rule sees this event and invokes the "Load Lambda." 5. Final Load & Notification: This Load Lambda executes a COPY command, loading the fast, columnar Parquet data into Redshift. Upon success, it publishes a message to SNS, and the BI Team gets an immediate email: "The data is fresh and ready for analysis." The Business & Technical Wins This isn't just an engineering exercise; this design delivers key benefits: Superior Resilience: The SQS queue ensures no data is ever lost. If a downstream process fails, the message is safely retried without bringing the entire pipeline to a halt. Component Decoupling: Each service (ingest, transform, load) is independent. We can update, scale, or fix one part without breaking any other, a must for agile development. Performance & Cost: We use serverless components (Lambda, S3, SQS), so we pay only for what we use. Plus, converting to Parquet makes Redshift queries significantly faster and more cost-effective. Total Automation & Observability: The pipeline is "hands-off" from start to finish. The final SNS alert provides a clear feedback loop to stakeholders, building trust in the data.

Event-Driven AI Integrations (SAP Event Mesh + AI) Smart Event Filtering: AI processes high-volume event streams (e.g., IoT sensor data) and forwards only relevant events to SAP systems. Predictive Triggers: AI predicts when to initiate integrations (e.g., auto-replenish inventory before stockouts). Example: A logistics company uses SAP Event Mesh to track shipment delays. AI analyzes weather + traffic data to reroute shipments proactively. 4. SAP Graph + AI for Context-Aware Integrations Unified Data Access: SAP Graph provides a single API endpoint for cross-SAP data (S/4HANA, SuccessFactors, Ariba). AI Adds Context: Example: When fetching a customer record, AI automatically enriches it with related sales orders and support tickets. Real-World Use Case: AI-Powered Invoice Processing Scenario: Automatically validate supplier invoices against POs and contracts. AI Extraction: Invoice arrives via SAP Document Information Extraction (DocAI). AI parses unstructured PDFs into structured data.     𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝘂𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗻. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗻. The trigger decides when a pipeline starts.  That choice shapes reliability, cost, and freshness.  Three approaches, each with different trade-offs. 𝟭. 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 "Run at 2 AM daily." Predictable, easy to monitor, easy to reason about. Works well when source data arrives on a known cadence. Trade-off: if the upstream source is late, the pipeline runs on stale or missing data. If it arrives early, data sits idle until the next window. 𝟮. 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁-𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 "Run when the file lands." The pipeline reacts to something happening. File sensors, webhooks, message queues, S3 event notifications. Trade-off: more moving parts. You need listeners and clear error handling for when the event never comes or arrives twice. 𝟯. 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮-𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 "Run when the upstream table is fresh." The trigger checks whether source data has actually been updated before starting. Airflow datasets, Dagster asset sensors, and dbt source freshness checks all enable this. Trade-off: added complexity in tracking data state. But it eliminates the most common failure mode: running a pipeline before its inputs are ready. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Schedule optimizes predictability. Event optimizes responsiveness. Data-aware optimizes correctness. Each layer adds intelligence and operational complexity. Most production platforms use a mix. Schedules for predictable batch. Events for real-time reactions.   • Design for Scale - 2: The Power of Events in Distributed System Events are fundamental building blocks in modern distributed systems, yet their importance is often underappreciated. To understand their power, we must first distinguish events from commands and queries. Events represent immutable facts - things that have already occurred. In contrast, commands express intentions that may or may not succeed. While this distinction can be subtle, it's crucial for system design. Interestingly, we can also treat commands and queries themselves as event streams in different contexts, representing the historical record of customer interactions with our system. This event-centric thinking unlocks elegant solutions to traditionally complex problems. The most common type of event is Change Data Capture. I worked on a quota enforcement tracking resource usage system for millions of customers. The initial approach using scheduled batch queries placed enormous stress on the database. However, by recognizing that data volume was high but change velocity was relatively low, we pivoted to an event-driven approach: establish baseline counts and track mutations through events. This transformation converted a challenging scaling problem into simple in-memory counting. The durability of events provided built-in reliability - if processing failed, we could replay the event stream. We further optimized by buffering rapid add/delete operations in memory, allowing them to cancel out before writing to the quota system, dramatically reducing write pressure. Events can elegantly address the notorious distributed transaction problem through the Saga pattern. Instead of struggling with complex transaction coordination across heterogeneous datastores, we can listen to committed events from the primary system and reliably propagate changes. This approach transforms a difficult distributed transaction problem into a more manageable event-based synchronization challenge. This pattern isn't new - many database systems internally use similar approaches like write-ahead logs or commit logs for replication and synchronization. Events also provide a powerful foundation for system validation and auditing. Independent systems can cross-check correctness and completeness by consuming the same event streams. This pattern has proven successful even in language models for improving result accuracy. But events encompass more than just data changes. Metrics, application logs, audit trails, and user interactions all represent valuable event streams. This broader perspective enables creative solutions to seemingly intractable problems. Treating events as first-class citizens in distributed system design leads to more scalable, reliable, and maintainable architectures. Whether handling data mutations, system operations, or user interactions, event-driven approaches often simplify complex problems while providing built-in reliability and auditability.     Stop babysitting your data pipelines! I used to spend way too much time manually checking if files landed in S3, if upstream jobs finished, or if external APIs were actually responding. Event-driven beats time-driven. Instead of running cron jobs every 5 minutes, hoping something happened, sensors react to actual events. File appears? Sensor triggers. Upstream run completes? Sensor knows. System goes down? Sensors can alert you. Sensors use run keys to ensure each unique event only triggers one run. When you're dealing with thousands of events, cursors let you pick up exactly where you left off. Think of them as bookmarks that remember what you've already processed – super efficient for high-volume scenarios.

    Ever tried keeping Salesforce data in sync with an external system, only to run into polling delays, missed deletes, or performance bottlenecks? I’ve found Change Data Capture (CDC) to be a game-changer for event-driven integrations. With CDC, every record create, update, delete, or undelete fires a “change event” into Salesforce’s event bus. External systems subscribe once and get only the changes they need—no more round-the-clock polling. Some favorite use cases: Sales Cloud → ERP sync: Account and Opportunity changes flow in real time to your finance system. Service Cloud → Ticketing: Case updates automatically create or update tickets in Jira or ServiceNow. On-platform automation: Complex recalculations or external callouts happen asynchronously via CDC triggers, not inside the user’s save. Pro tip: Leverage the ChangeEventHeader—it tells you exactly which fields changed, when, and even who triggered the change. Use changeOrigin to avoid feedback loops when syncing bi-directionally.     Many Businesses invest in Analytics Tools Expecting Clarity. What they often get instead is more data - without confidence. GA4 can track almost anything. Salesforce can store every interaction. But without a disciplined event framework connecting the two, accuracy becomes optional, and decisions become slower. That’s why clean data foundations always start with event accuracy not dashboards. Here’s how I help small and mid-sized businesses build event accuracy that supports real decision-making: 1- Event Accuracy Starts With Business Logic: Before a single event is finalized, I define why it exists. What business question does it answer? What decision will be made from it? Events that don’t serve a decision don’t get implemented. This keeps GA4 focused on intent-driven actions not clicks, scrolls, or noise that inflate reporting without adding value. 2- Why Salesforce Keeps Event Accuracy Honest: Salesforce introduces accountability into measurement. A lead isn’t accurate unless it progresses. An opportunity isn’t real unless it advances stages. I align GA4 events to Salesforce lifecycle moments so every tracked action is validated against real outcomes. When events fail to align with CRM movement, they’re corrected not explained away. This connection prevents false positives and protects reporting credibility. 3- Why My Framework Works for Growing Teams: SMBs don’t need more metrics - they need fewer, more reliable ones. I design event structures that remain consistent as traffic grows, channels expand, and teams change.   • Modern financial operations demand the ability to process millions of invoices daily, with low latency, high availability, and real-time business visibility. Traditional monolithic systems struggle to keep up with the surges and complexity of global invoice processing. By adopting an event-driven approach, organizations can decouple their processing logic, enabling independent scaling, real-time monitoring, and resilient error handling. Amazon Simple Queue Service (#SQS) and Amazon Simple Notification Service (#SNS) enable resilience and scale in this architecture. SNS acts as the event router and broadcaster in this architecture. After events are ingested (via API Gateway and routed through EventBridge), SNS topics are used to fan out invoice events to multiple downstream consumers. Each invoice status—such as ingestion, reconciliation, authorization, and posting—gets its own SNS topic, enabling fine-grained control and filtering at the subscription level. This ensures that only relevant consumers receive specific event types, and the system can easily scale to accommodate new consumers or processing requirements without disrupting existing flows. Each SNS topic fans out messages to one or more SQS queues. SQS provides the critical function of decoupling the event delivery from processing. This means that even if downstream consumers (like AWS Lambda functions or Fargate tasks) are temporarily overwhelmed or offline, no events are lost—SQS queues persist them until they can be processed. Additionally, SQS supports dead-letter queues (DLQs) for handling failed or unprocessable messages, enabling robust error handling and alerting for operational teams. Specific to resilience and scale, look at these numbers.... • Massive Throughput: SNS can publish up to 30,000 messages per second, and SQS queues can handle 120,000 in-flight messages by default (with quotas that can be raised). This supports surges of up to 86 million daily invoice events. • Cellular Architecture: By partitioning the system into independent regional “cells,” each with its own set of SNS topics and SQS queues, organizations can scale horizontally, isolate failures, and ensure high availability. • Real-Time Monitoring: The decoupled, event-driven flow—powered by SNS and SQS—enables near real-time dashboards and alerting, so finance executives and auditors always have up-to-date visibility into invoice processing status. #financialsystems #cloud #data #aws https://lnkd.in/gNnYpeu7
