If you know me at all, you know I've spent years building AI-powered products and converting legacy systems into adaptive experiences. And I keep seeing the same pattern: talented designers asking me "what even is adaptive UI?" because nobody's explaining it in practical, buildable terms. Your interface is frozen in time. Same buttons, same layout, same experience for everyone. Meanwhile, your users are all completely different. Adaptive UI fixes this. WHAT IS ADAPTIVE UI? (aka, responsive, generative, dynamic or intelligent UI) Your interface watches how people behave, learns their patterns, and redesigns itself in real-time to fit them. Some shoppers know exactly what they want (fast checkout). Others need to research everything (reviews, specs). Some are visual (show me photos). Others are price-sensitive (where's the sale?). Static UI forces everyone through the same experience. Adaptive UI generates a personalized interface based on actual behavior. This isn't just showing different content. The entire interface regenerates around each user's workflow. HOW IT WORKS Two components: The Observer: Watches behavior What do they click? Where do they hesitate? What patterns emerge? The Generator: Creates personalized layouts Rearranges content hierarchy Shows/hides relevant features Adjusts buttons and placement Rewrites microcopy for skill level The loop: Observe → Learn → Predict → Generate → Repeat BEST USE CASES E-commerce: Financial services: SaaS tools: Healthcare: Adaptive UI wins where users are doing something complex, high-stakes, or repeated frequently. HOW YOU BUILD IT You're not coding this yourself. But you ARE designing the system. Step 1: Map behavioral signals Watch sessions. List patterns: clicks size chart 3x = fit anxiety Step 2: Define 3-5 behavioral profiles Not demographics. Behavioral patterns like "Confident Buyer," "Anxious Researcher" Step 3: Design variants in Figma One product page becomes five variants (one per profile) Step 4: Write adaptation rules IF [signal] THEN [interface change] BECAUSE [user need] Step 5: Hand off to engineering They build: event tracking, profile detection, conditional rendering THE REALITY The full build involves cold start problems, filter bubbles, spatial memory, ethical guardrails, mobile constraints, accessibility. But understand this: You're not designing screens anymore. You're designing systems that generate screens. Static interfaces aren't wrong. They're just frozen. And if you're still designing for that mythical "average user," you're designing for someone who doesn't exist. The companies winning in 5 years won't have the prettiest static sites. How do you wire interface to intent? Like how do you *actually* do it? I talk a lot about designing interfaces that adapt in real time to user intent and context, and it’s easier than you might think. Here’s a primer for designers. I made this video to show how to quickly prototype a system that chooses the right design pattern to display for the specific context. This kind of exploration has become an essential part of our early-stage work in design projects at Big Medium. We sketch behavior design in words. I also wrote it up to explain what it does and how this approach fits into the design process (link in the comments). The gist: it used to be really, really hard for systems to determine user intent from natural language or other cues. But now… LLMs just get it. And if you give them a clear, constrained system to match that intent to specific design patterns, they’re really good at making the connection. This lets you deliver radically adaptive experiences: interfaces that change content, structure, style, or behavior—sometimes all at once—to provide the right experience for the moment. In this context, the LLM’s job shifts from direct chat to mediating simple design decisions. It acts less as a conversational partner than as a stand-in production designer assembling building-block UI elements or adjusting interface settings. As the designer, your role shifts to creative director, defining the interaction language and rules. It’s design system work for real-time production. This also means that designers become important contributors to the system prompt, because it’s where the system’s behavior design happens. As the example shows, these prompts don’t have to be rocket science; they’re plain-language instructions telling the system how and why to use certain interface conventions. That’s the kind of thinking and explanation that designers excel at: describing what the interface does and why. Only now you’re describing this logic to the system itself. It’s also what LLMs excel at. This approach uses LLMs for what they do best (intent, manner, and syntax) and sidesteps where they’re wobbly (facts and complex reasoning). It’s safe and reliable with vanishingly small hallucination rates. Give it a try! How to Build Adaptive UIs to democratize Enterprise Data. Imagine an interface that doesn’t just show data, but understands what users need and delivers it in the most meaningful form. That’s the value of an Adaptive User Interface, powered by an AI agent that turns natural language questions into clear, personalized visualizations. Instead of navigating complex dashboards, users can simply ask: “Which areas need the most improvement?” “Show me trends over the last quarter.” “Which categories improved the most?” Your system then identifies the right data, selects the best visualization, and presents it clearly. No manual configuration required. Here’s how to build that system. The Intelligence Behind Adaptive Charting: A Three-Step Agentic Workflow The core of an Adaptive UI is an AI agent that can reason and take action. You can implement this as a workflow within your backend service: 1. Code Generation for Analysis: First, build your agent to understand the user's question and the structure of their data. The agent should then generate and execute a script to perform the correct analysis. This step moves beyond simple Q&A and produces a structured data table containing the answer. 2. Expert Visualization Choice: This is the critical step that makes the UI "adaptive." Instead of defaulting to a table, train your agent to make an expert decision on the best way to visualize the resulting data. You can achieve this by creating a detailed *system prompt* that instructs the LLM to act as a visualization expert. This prompt should guide the LLM to choose between bar charts for comparisons, line charts for trends, etc., and then generate a structured **JSON configuration** that defines the entire chart. This JSON should specify the chart type, axes, colors, and even human-readable metadata like a title and key insights. 3. Dynamic Frontend Rendering: Finally, design your frontend to be a dynamic rendering engine, not a static dashboard. Create a component (e.g., in React) that can accept the JSON configuration from your agent. This component will read the spec and render the prescribed chart on the fly. If your agent decides a bar chart is best, the user sees a bar chart. If a line chart tells a clearer story, a line chart appears instantly. **The Result: An Empowered, Data-Driven User** By implementing this agentic workflow, you create a system that is far more valuable than a traditional BI tool. You democratize data access, eliminate the need for specialized training, and allow everyone, from executives to managers to get critical insights instantly. The interface adapts to the user's intent, not the other way around, leading to faster, better-informed decisions.

Static interfaces don’t work anymore. A product has to adapt to the user, otherwise it slows them down. Here’s what actually works in AI products today, not in slide decks: 1. Interfaces that adapt to behavior, not the other way around Teams have stopped building “universal” dashboards. The structure, block order, and navigation shift based on how people actually use the product. What I consistently see: • content surfaces higher when engagement grows • navigation simplifies for specific user types • layouts adjust to individual interaction patterns • dashboards don’t “show data”, they surface the needed insights This cuts noise and speeds up workflows. 2. Context- and behavior-driven adaptation It’s about the interface understanding where you are, what device you’re on, what the last interaction was, and what the logical next step should be. Examples: • models predicting the next user action (70%+ accuracy) • actions that appear only when the context demands them • filters that adapt to how a team actually works The result: fewer steps, fewer errors, lower cognitive load. 3. Working with emotional states (carefully, but already used) It’s not a standard yet, but the experiments are promising. Some models detect stress, frustration, or fatigue through voice or facial cues and adjust the interface accordingly. Examples: • calming mode when tension is detected • lighter or humorous content when irritation appears • color and micro-animation shifts to reduce load When it’s not overdone, users accept it well. Hyper-adaptivity is a way to build a product that works closer to real workflows from day one. For AI teams it comes down to a simple principle: your interface should learn as fast as your users adapt to the product. This gives you: • less friction • faster onboarding • more reliable product signals • consistent experience across user types Adaptive UX isn’t a “wow effect.” It’s the new baseline for quality in AI products.

One of the constant challenges in UI/UX design is creating websites that serve diverse user needs effectively. While development and research teams often aim for universal accessibility, end users arrive with vastly different objectives. Consider Apple's website - visitors might need MacOS update information, iPhone purchasing, technical support, laptop upgrades, or countless other Apple-related services. Yet their homepage prominently features only their latest phone model at the top. This one-size-fits-all approach, while efficient for high-traffic priorities, can now be fundamentally reimagined through AI-driven personalization. Large Language Models enable us to aggregate visitor context and dynamically generate user interfaces that adapt to individual needs in real-time. This shift from static layouts to Generative UI (GenUI) demonstrates a significant change in how we approach web experiences. To explore this concept, I built a demonstration using GenUI techniques - specifically implementing an LLM model to generate complete user interfaces based on user needs and context in a laptop purchasing e-commerce setting. By combining existing user information with guided conversation, the LLM is able to dynamically generate and modify webpage content to precisely match a user’s individual preferences. Rather than navigating through generic product pages, users experience interfaces explicitly tailored to their requirements at that exact moment. The technical implementation leverages several key components: 1. Real-time UI generation based on conversational context 2. Dynamic content adaptation using visitor data 3. Integration patterns that maintain responsive performance This approach fundamentally disrupts traditional UI/UX methodologies, where interfaces are often designed once for many users. Instead, GenUI enables interfaces that are generated uniquely for each user, each time. Interfaces are about to become generative, created in real time by AI instead of being fully designed upfront. Google recently open-sourced A2UI (Agent-to-User Interface), and this is a big deal. It marks a turning point toward on-the-fly generated UIs, sometimes called Generative UI, Agent-driven UI, or Just-in-Time UI. Different names, same idea: interfaces are assembled dynamically based on user intent and context, then disappear once the task is complete. Why this matters. Traditional interfaces are static. We design full pages in advance and force users to navigate options, filters, and screens they may not need. Chat interfaces tried to simplify this, but replaced navigation with typing. Long conversations. Too much back and forth. High cognitive load. On-the-fly generated UIs combine the strengths of both. Take a restaurant finder. Instead of a page full of filters, or a long chat asking one question at a time, the AI creates small, temporary UI components as the conversation evolves. Location cards you can tap. Cuisine chips. Available time slots as buttons. Then a few curated restaurant cards that already match your budget and party size, with a clear “Book” action. - No full page. - No endless typing. - No scanning hundreds of results.
