    It surprises me how many e-commerce brands pretend to offer a personalized storefront, but show the same store to everyone. The attached visual that shows what a modern storefront actually looks like behind the scenes, which is a simple system that reacts in real time. Thought it would be useful to break this down into three stages with the recommended tech stack below: Stage 1: Signals (data in) You capture (live) what’s already happening the moment someone arrives. How they got there, what they’re doing, what device they’re on, and whether they’ve bought before. Typical stack: • Segment or RudderStack for event capture • Shopify events and customer data • Google Tag Manager • Meta / TikTok UTMs for paid context Focus on clean, real-time signals without overengineering identity. Stage 2: Decisions (what to show) Those signals get turned into a simple decision immediately. Which message, which products, which path makes sense for this visitor right now. If it’s not fast enough to change the first screen, it doesn’t count. Typical stack: • Dynamic Yield or Nosto • Vercel edge logic • Cloudflare Workers • Simple rules or light models, not heavy AI Remember, speed beats sophistication. Stage 3: Experience (what changes) The storefront responds on arrival. The hero, first product grid, and primary CTA change instantly so the site feels relevant from the first moment. Typical stack: • Shopify Hydrogen or native Shopify sections • Contentful or Optimizely • Server-side or edge-rendered changes, not client-side flicker Important, personalize above the fold first. A returning high-value customer sees new arrivals and a faster path to checkout. A first-time visitor from paid sees a clearer offer and fewer choices. A deal-driven shopper sees bundles and savings upfront. Everything else comes later. If you want to start without overengineering: • Pick the two audiences that matter most • Personalize only the hero and first product grid • Measure lift on conversion rate and revenue per session • Add complexity only after this works Start simple: focus on one working example that proves the storefront can adapt in real time in a way customers actually feel.

    Data doesn’t have to define your design process. But failing to use it is a big mistake. In our process, we use data from the beginning to draw inspiration, then use data to guide our prototyping decisions, and eventually make more data-driven choices. The process is more flexible than people often think. The goal isn’t to use data–it’s to make more informed decisions that ultimately improve user and business outcomes. Here’s how: → Data-Inspired Design (Frame the Challenge) We use data to inspire and shape our understanding of the design problem. The aim is to find insights that lead to creative solutions while considering what users need, how they behave, and why they act in specific ways. We find up to 100 opportunities to create lift in a design initiative. Helio UX metrics help us gather early user feedback or signals, highlighting where users struggle or where new opportunities lie. We can set a clear direction for the design process by using these early insights and proxy metrics. We also do interviews. Our team focuses on collecting these early signals to understand the reasons behind user actions. → Data-Informed Design (Assess the Potential) We weigh the benefits and risks of different ideas. Data helps guide the design process, but intuition and insights are just as important as measurable factors. In more significant engagements, we collect answers from up to 30,000 participants in this phase. Helio is handy here, as it allows teams to test early prototypes on a large scale, gathering UX metrics crucial for evaluating design choices. Data storytelling and analyzing user research turn insights into practical feedback. Collaboration across teams also ensures that the design meets user and business needs. We gather feedback through usability tests and measure task completion rates, helping link early design ideas to clear success criteria. → Data-Driven Design (Finalize the Choices) Data helps us make decisions that align with business and user goals. The focus is refining the design using feedback and data to make it as effective as possible. Once the design is live, we connect early metrics with analytics. Helio helps us collect data, such as success rates, user satisfaction, and task completion. These figures provide the confidence needed to finalize design decisions. We align UX metrics with business goals, focusing on clear outcomes like improved usability, higher feature adoption, or revenue growth. Design KPIs and early signals play a role, guiding us in making final decisions based on how well the product performs against these success metrics. —–––––– Data can be applied differently throughout the design process—from an initial source of inspiration to a guiding force in assessing potential and ultimately as the driver of final decisions.     One of the constant challenges in UI/UX design is creating websites that serve diverse user needs effectively. While development and research teams often aim for universal accessibility, end users arrive with vastly different objectives. Consider Apple's website - visitors might need MacOS update information, iPhone purchasing, technical support, laptop upgrades, or countless other Apple-related services. Yet their homepage prominently features only their latest phone model at the top. This one-size-fits-all approach, while efficient for high-traffic priorities, can now be fundamentally reimagined through AI-driven personalization. Large Language Models enable us to aggregate visitor context and dynamically generate user interfaces that adapt to individual needs in real-time. This shift from static layouts to Generative UI (GenUI) demonstrates a significant change in how we approach web experiences. To explore this concept, I built a demonstration using GenUI techniques - specifically implementing an LLM model to generate complete user interfaces based on user needs and context in a laptop purchasing e-commerce setting. By combining existing user information with guided conversation, the LLM is able to dynamically generate and modify webpage content to precisely match a user’s individual preferences. Rather than navigating through generic product pages, users experience interfaces explicitly tailored to their requirements at that exact moment. The technical implementation leverages several key components: 1. Real-time UI generation based on conversational context 2. Dynamic content adaptation using visitor data 3. Integration patterns that maintain responsive performance This approach fundamentally disrupts traditional UI/UX methodologies, where interfaces are often designed once for many users. Instead, GenUI enables interfaces that are generated uniquely for each user, each time.     If you know me at all, you know I've spent years building AI-powered products and converting legacy systems into adaptive experiences. And I keep seeing the same pattern: talented designers asking me "what even is adaptive UI?" because nobody's explaining it in practical, buildable terms. Your interface is frozen in time. Same buttons, same layout, same experience for everyone. Meanwhile, your users are all completely different. Adaptive UI fixes this. WHAT IS ADAPTIVE UI? (aka, responsive, generative, dynamic or intelligent UI) Your interface watches how people behave, learns their patterns, and redesigns itself in real-time to fit them. Some shoppers know exactly what they want (fast checkout). Others need to research everything (reviews, specs). Some are visual (show me photos). Others are price-sensitive (where's the sale?). Static UI forces everyone through the same experience. Adaptive UI generates a personalized interface based on actual behavior. This isn't just showing different content. The entire interface regenerates around each user's workflow. HOW IT WORKS Two components: The Observer: Watches behavior What do they click? Where do they hesitate? What patterns emerge? The Generator: Creates personalized layouts Rearranges content hierarchy Shows/hides relevant features Adjusts buttons and placement Rewrites microcopy for skill level The loop: Observe → Learn → Predict → Generate → Repeat BEST USE CASES E-commerce: Financial services: SaaS tools: Healthcare: Adaptive UI wins where users are doing something complex, high-stakes, or repeated frequently. HOW YOU BUILD IT You're not coding this yourself. But you ARE designing the system. Step 1: Map behavioral signals Watch sessions. List patterns: clicks size chart 3x = fit anxiety Step 2: Define 3-5 behavioral profiles Not demographics. Behavioral patterns like "Confident Buyer," "Anxious Researcher" Step 3: Design variants in Figma One product page becomes five variants (one per profile) Step 4: Write adaptation rules IF [signal] THEN [interface change] BECAUSE [user need] Step 5: Hand off to engineering They build: event tracking, profile detection, conditional rendering THE REALITY The full build involves cold start problems, filter bubbles, spatial memory, ethical guardrails, mobile constraints, accessibility. But understand this: You're not designing screens anymore. You're designing systems that generate screens. Static interfaces aren't wrong. They're just frozen. And if you're still designing for that mythical "average user," you're designing for someone who doesn't exist. The companies winning in 5 years won't have the prettiest static sites.
