    In my previous post, I explored the hidden costs of data silos. Today, I want to share practical steps that deliver value without requiring immediate organisational restructuring or technology overhauls. The journey from siloed to integrated data follows a maturity curve, beginning with quick wins and progressing toward more substantial transformation. For immediate progress: 1) Identify your "golden datasets": Focus on the 20% of data driving 80% of decisions. Prioritise customer, product, and financial datasets that cross departmental boundaries. 2) Create a simple business glossary: Document how terms differ across departments. When Finance defines "revenue" differently than Sales, capturing both definitions creates transparency without forcing uniformity. 3) Implement read-only integration patterns: Establish one-way flows where analytics platforms access source data without disrupting existing systems. These connections create cross-silo visibility with minimal risk. 4) Build a culture of trust: Reward cross-departmental collaboration. Create incentives that make data sharing a path to recognition rather than a threat to influence or expertise. 5) Establish cross-functional data forums: Host regular meetings where data users share challenges and use cases, building relationships while identifying practical integration opportunities. As these initiatives gain traction, organisations can advance to more substantial approaches: 6) Match your approach to complexity: Smaller organisations often succeed with centralised data management, while larger enterprises typically require domain-centric strategies. 7) Apply bounded contexts: Map where business domains have distinct needs and terminology, creating clear translation points between areas like Sales, Finance, and Operations. 8) Adopt a data product mindset: Designate product owners for critical datasets who treat data as a product with clear consumers and quality standards rather than simply an asset to be stored. 9) Develop a federated metadata approach: Catalogue not just what exists, but how data relates across domains, making relationships between siloed systems explicit. 10) Maintain disciplined data modelling: Well-structured data within domains makes integration between them far more manageable, regardless of your architectural approach. This stepped approach delivers immediate value while building momentum for more sophisticated strategies. The most successful organisations pair technical solutions with cultural transformation, recognising that effective data integration is ultimately about people collaborating across boundaries.     𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗮 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝘆, 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗴𝘀. Episode 24 showed why star schema is still the foundation for analytics.  But some enterprise environments hit its limits and that's where Data Vault enters. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗮 𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱: → Dozens of source systems feeding the same entities each with its own version of "customer" or "product" → Business rules that change quarterly and every change requires remodeling fact tables → Compliance requirements that demand full auditability of every change, every source, every load 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗩𝗮𝘂𝗹𝘁 - 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝘀: → 𝗛𝘂𝗯𝘀: Business keys. The stable identifiers that don't change: customer_id, product_sku, order_number. One hub per core business entity. → 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝘀: Relationships between hubs. Customer-to-order, product-to-supplier. Modeled independently: so when the business restructures, links change without rewriting hubs. → 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀: Descriptive attributes with full history. Every change is a new row with a timestamp and source tag. No overwrites. Complete audit trail. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸: → Single source, stable business rules, fast BI → Star schema → Multiple sources, evolving rules, audit-heavy → Data Vault for integration, star schema marts for consumption Data Vault absorbs change. Star schema delivers clarity.  They solve different problems and often work best together. Most enterprises that adopt Data Vault still serve BI through dimensional models.  The vault is the engine room.  The star is the dashboard.     As data engineers, it's easy to see our world as pipelines, schemas, and DAGs. However, the truth is that we're not just moving data—we're building the core infrastructure that powers our company's entire Go-To-Market engine. The biggest mistake we can make is treating all "customer data" as a monolithic stream. The engineering choices we make must change based on the data's origin and intent. A signal intentionally shared by a customer in a preference center is fundamentally different from an inferred attribute bought from a vendor. To build robust, scalable, and trustworthy GTM systems, we must understand the distinct engineering challenges for each data layer: Zero-Party Data: How do you handle consent and preference changes over time? (Hint: mutable flags in a user table won't cut it.) First-Party Data: Where do you solve the identity resolution puzzle? Your CDP is fast, but your warehouse is more cost-effective and flexible at scale. Second-Party Data: How do you join datasets with partners without exposing raw PII? This is where data clean rooms become critical infrastructure. Third-Party Data: How do you integrate this data without it contaminating your source-of-truth tables? It requires isolation, validation, and provenance tracking. Fourth-Party Data: Are you ready for the next wave of multi-party, privacy-preserving consortia? Understanding this taxonomy isn't just for marketers. It dictates our system design, our data contracts, and the ultimate reliability of the revenue machine we're responsible for building.     Customer Data Platforms (CDP): ELI5 Edition At least once a day, I get asked about CDPs from a client or colleague. What are they? Do we need one? Who? How much? Here's a quick rundown: What is a CDP? I'll steal Tealium's definition ('cus I like it.) "A CDP is a technology that collects data in a governed way from sources like web, mobile, in-store, call center, and IoT, unifies it to create accurate customer profiles in real time, and then makes it accessible to and actionable for other tools and technology." What does a CDP solve? 1.) “Single source of truth for customer data” - No longer have fractional customer views in CRM, Email, ERP systems, loyalty programs, offline and POS, etc. - One unified view of the customer, syndicated to all systems. 2.) Combats cookie-loss with 1st Party Data - Timely and critical due to increased cookie blocking and privacy. - Includes zero-party data (customer survey responses, attributes & preferences) 3.) Governance & Privacy - Due to privacy and data regulations like GDPR, CCPA. Managing consent (opt-in/out) across platforms is increasingly challenging. - A CDP can centralize this at the user level and syndicate it to all tools. 4.) Data Activation & 3rd Party Integrations - No-code connectors to share data w/ 3rd parties - UI-based audience, segmentation, and customer journey builders 5.) Analytics & Modeling - Reporting, financial modeling, predictive analytics are stronger due to clean and current data So how does a CDP work? 1.) The CDP collects or ingests data - web, mobile, CRM, transactional, POS, etc. 2.) Visitor data is blended to a single customer profile - via cookies, customer ids, device fingerprinting, email addresses, 3rd party ids 3.) Those visitors are then grouped into segments (audiences) 4.)
