    🧪 Useful Calculators For UX Research. Helpful tools and guides to estimate the right number of participants for surveys, card sorting and usability testing. 🤔 Testing isn’t about finding universal truths, but key blockers. 🚫 Scale ≠ clarity: we must know what we’re trying to learn first. ✅ Iterate with 5 people at a time: test, adjust, test again. ✅ Surveys: aim for confidence level 95%, margin of error 2–5%. ✅ With 10.000 users, you will need ≥567 answers to reduce bias. ✅ Assume the response rate of 20–30% (incl. no-show-rate). ✅ To get reliable survey results, we need to invite 2835 people. ✅ For card sorting, get 15–30+ people to sort independently. ✅ For tree testing, invite at least 25 (better: 50) participants. ✅ Nothing matters more than targeted and diverse sample. I absolutely love Nikki Anderson’s point about big sample sizes often wrongfully viewed as the “safest” way to discover insights. They can’t fix vague goals, at times answer wrong or misleading questions, often skip the difficult part of framing the problem first. Scale sounds impressive, but it doesn’t map to clarity. Nikki suggests to start with a decision of what we’re trying to learn first, then the question, then the method and then the sample size. But we must know — and be committed — what want to know first. And very often we don’t need statistically significant results to notice and act on critical blockers. Research doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. In the worst case, I start with 5×45 mins interviews to spot critical blockers and unmet user needs. As we run sessions, I mark critical areas and record short screen share snippets — with consent — and make them visible in the company.     I’ve been into hotel finance for almost 10+ years now. I’ve learned that what’s left unsaid by your guests often impacts your bottom line the most. Sure, you’ve got rave reviews from happy travelers, and yes, complaint-handling protocols are in place. But what about the guests who leave with a polite smile yet never return? 𝟭. 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘀: Returning guests are 60%-70% more profitable than new ones. But if their dissatisfaction remains unvoiced, you may never know why they didn’t come back. 𝟮. 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲: A guest who doesn’t complain might not be angry—but they also aren’t recommending your property to friends or family. 𝟯. 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀: Issues like slow room service or poor amenities that go unreported stay unaddressed. Unsolved problems can cost more over time, both financially and reputationally. 𝟰. 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗨𝗽𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: Unspoken discomfort (like noisy rooms or bland food) can discourage guests from spending more on upgrades or F&B services. But how do you identify these silent signals? 𝟭. 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽-𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗚𝗼 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀 - Ask open-ended questions like: “𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙙𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙮 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧?” 𝟮. 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳 - Train them to observe non-verbal cues and proactively check in: “𝙃𝙤𝙬’𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙢? 𝙄𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙚?” 𝟰. 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗢𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 - A lack of reviews could be as telling as negative ones. 𝟲. 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺—𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺.     How often do we receive a notification or an alert from a company about an issue before we even realize there’s a problem? Whether it’s a bank flagging suspicious activity, a delivery service notifying us of a delay, or a telecom provider offering compensation for downtime, proactive engagement is reshaping the customer experience landscape. Here’s an interesting fact: 67% of customers globally have a more favorable view of brands that offer or contact them with proactive customer service notifications. Yet, many businesses still focus solely on reactive support, missing the opportunity to elevate customer loyalty through preemptive action. In my opinion, the most impactful customer experiences don’t happen when customers reach out for help. They happen when businesses anticipate their needs and address them before they even ask. How, then, can businesses transform their CX strategies to embrace proactive engagement? Here are three essential strategies to lead the way: 1. Anticipate Customer Needs with Data and Insights The first step in proactive engagement is understanding your customers on a deeper level. Businesses can predict potential issues by analyzing behavioral patterns, feedback, and usage trends and offer solutions in advance. For example, monitoring a subscription service’s usage data could reveal customers at risk of disengagement, prompting a personalized offer to re-engage them. According to the 2024 Edelman Trust Institute Barometer, Saudi Arabia ranks first globally in trust in government leadership at 86%. The Kingdom is a clear example of how data-driven policies can foster trust. Businesses can follow this model by leveraging data insights to predict and address customer needs proactively. 2. Personalization: Beyond Generic Engagement Proactive engagement is most effective when tailored to individual preferences. Personalization goes beyond addressing customers by name; it involves delivering messages that resonate with their unique journeys. For instance, an e-commerce platform could recommend products based on browsing history or alert customers about restocks of their favorite items. 3. Solve Problems Before They Arise The ultimate goal of proactive engagement is to reduce friction. Offering solutions before customers encounter issues—like sending reminders for payments or proactively addressing service disruptions—can turn potential frustrations into positive experiences.     Remember that bad survey you wrote? The one that resulted in responses filled with blatant bias and caused you to doubt whether your respondents even understood the questions? Creating a survey may seem like a simple task, but even minor errors can result in biased results and unreliable data. If this has happened to you before, it's likely due to one or more of these common mistakes in your survey design: 1. Ambiguous Questions: Vague wording like “often” or “regularly” leads to varied interpretations among respondents. Be specific—use clear options like “daily,” “weekly,” or “monthly” to ensure consistent and accurate responses. 2. Double-Barreled Questions: Combining two questions into one, such as “Do you find our website attractive and easy to navigate?” can confuse respondents and lead to unclear answers. Break these into separate questions to get precise, actionable feedback. 3. Leading/Loaded Questions: Questions that push respondents toward a specific answer, like “Do you agree that responsible citizens should support local businesses?” can introduce bias. Keep your questions neutral to gather unbiased, genuine opinions. 4. Assumptions: Assuming respondents have certain knowledge or opinions can skew results. For example, “Are you in favor of a balanced budget?” assumes understanding of its implications. Provide necessary context to ensure respondents fully grasp the question. 5. Burdensome Questions: Asking complex or detail-heavy questions, such as “How many times have you dined out in the last six months?” can overwhelm respondents and lead to inaccurate answers. Simplify these questions or offer multiple-choice options to make them easier to answer. 6. Handling Sensitive Topics: Sensitive questions, like those about personal habits or finances, need to be phrased carefully to avoid discomfort. Use neutral language, provide options to skip or anonymize answers, or employ tactics like Randomized Response Survey (RRS) to encourage honest, accurate responses. By being aware of and avoiding these potential mistakes, you can create surveys that produce precise, dependable, and useful information.     I joined a company with a -16 NPS score. Four years later, we hit +39 NPS and grew revenue from $161M to $264M. Here's exactly what we did. When I walked in the door, the situation was rough: Customers were disengaged and churning at a concerning rate. There was no structured approach to customer engagement. The renewal motion was broken. No forecasting, no predictability, and very few long-term renewals. All of this during a pivotal platform transformation, moving our legacy customers from on-premise to SaaS. So we built a plan around five core moves: 1. Mapped the entire customer journey: We didn't just fix onboarding. We redesigned every touchpoint from the first touch as a prospect to their renewal. Proactive check-ins. Milestone tracking. No more hoping customers would figure it out. 2. Built a global CS team from scratch: Hired 20+ team members and three senior leaders in the first six months. You can't scale without the right people. 3. Launched an Executive Sponsor Program: For our enterprise accounts, we assigned executive sponsors to deepen relationships and build trust at the highest levels. 4. Implemented Strategic Business Reviews: Regular, structured account reviews that aligned customer goals with the value we were delivering. Not just status updates. 5. Started actually measuring satisfaction: Implemented NPS and CSAT tracking to identify pain points in real time. You can't fix what you don't measure. We then took the feedback and turned it into action through our CX team. The results over four years? NPS went from -16 to +39. Revenue grew from $161M to $264M. Gross retention grew from 84% to 96%. Net retention exceeded 130%. Customer engagement and satisfaction improved across the board. And the company eventually sold to a leading PE firm. This wasn't an overnight fix. It took four years of consistent, strategic execution. This is what happens when you treat Customer Success as a strategic growth engine, not a support function.     As UX researchers, we often rely on survey totals. We sum up Likert scale responses across a few items and call it a metric - satisfaction, usability, engagement, trust. It’s fast, familiar, and widely accepted. But if you’ve ever questioned whether a survey is truly capturing what matters, that’s where Item Response Theory (IRT) steps in. IRT is more than just a statistical model - it’s a smarter way to design, evaluate, and optimize questionnaires. While total scores give you a general snapshot, IRT gives you the diagnostic toolkit. It shifts your focus from just what the total score is to how each question behaves across different user types. Instead of treating every item as equally valuable, IRT assumes that each question has its own characteristics - its own difficulty level, its ability to discriminate between users with different trait levels (like low vs. high satisfaction), and even its tendency to generate noise. It mathematically models the likelihood of a particular response based on the person’s underlying trait (e.g., engagement) and the specific properties of that item. This lets you see which items are doing real work - and which ones are just adding bloat. Let’s say you’re trying to measure perceived product enjoyment. You include five questions. One of them - "I enjoy using this product" - is endorsed by nearly everyone. Another one - "This product makes me feel inspired" - gets more varied responses. Under IRT, the first item would be flagged as too easy; it doesn’t help you separate highly engaged users from moderately engaged ones. The second item, if it cleanly differentiates users with different enjoyment levels, would be seen as high in discrimination power. That’s the kind of insight you won’t get from a simple average. One of the biggest advantages of IRT is that it allows you to assess not just people’s responses, but the quality of the items themselves. You can identify and remove redundant or low-informative questions, focus your surveys to measure what matters most, and retain high precision with fewer items. This is a huge win for both survey respondents and UX researchers, especially when you're working in product environments where every question has to earn its place. IRT also enables more advanced applications. You can build adaptive surveys- ones that tailor themselves in real time to each participant. You can create item banks that offer equivalent measurement across time or populations. And you can track individual-level changes in UX perceptions over time more reliably, which is something traditional scoring methods often miss. I use IRT models to analyze UX questionnaires in my own work, especially when I want to make sure each item is pulling its weight. It also leads to clearer communication with designers, PMs, and engineers, because I can show why a certain item matters or doesn’t, backed by data that makes sense.

By thirteen, he had already made a name for himself, winning an award at the Bay Area Science Fair for his ingenious 10-bit parallel digital computer. Wozniak's introverted nature often led him to work in solitude, but he recognized the need for collaboration. Wozniak shared his revolutionary Apple I design with Steve Jobs, whose keen marketing instincts allowed him to see the potential for mass appeal.
