Exploring Intellectual Property with Dr. Ivan Misner, Founder of BNI! I had the privilege to interview, Dr. Misner, the brilliant mind behind Business Network International (BNI Global). We delved into the vital role that Intellectual Property (IP) plays in BNI's global success. Here are some key takeaways focused on IP: 1. Pick a trademarkable name: Initially named 'The Network', BNI faced trademark issues due to lack of distinctiveness. The name 'Business Network International' also encountered similar challenges, leading to the final, trademarkable name 'BNI'. 2. In-house IP management: BNI has a dedicated in-house counsel that maintains a docket of all trademarks filed globally. 3. Consistent trademark use in the right class: Filing trademarks in the correct class is essential and can protect against domain name issues. The trademark 'Givers Gain' helps BNI maintain a consistent brand worldwide. 4. Personal trademarks: To avoid impersonation, Ivan Misner has even trademarked his own name. 5. Copyright protection: BNI protects its meeting scripts, training materials, and Ivan's books through copyright, vigilantly tracking any infringement. 6. Comprehensive protection strategy: Recognizing that not everything can be protected solely by IP, BNI employs a mix of intellectual property, contracts, confidential information, and trade secrets to safeguard its business model. 7. Franchise model uniformity: In BNI's franchise model, maintaining structural uniformity is crucial. Franchisees are given limited, authorized scope to innovate, leading to valuable additions like the visitor host, visitor orientation, education coordinator, etc. 8. Foundation for growth and success: Intellectual Property is key to BNI's growth in many countries, but equally important is maintaining a strong company culture. Both are essential for long-term success. BNI's strategic IP management, from choosing trademarkable names to comprehensive protection strategies, demonstrates how safeguarding ideas fuels global growth and preserves organizational integrity. This highlights the vital role of effective IP practices in ensuring long-term business success and sustainability. #IPStrategy meets #IPfocusedDueDiligence 🚀 What if the unseen forces of your business could unlock unprecedented growth?💡As an outsourced IP Manager and Strategist for cutting-edge companies, I’ve always been fascinated by the untapped potential of intellectual property. From crafting my ultimate IP-focused Due Diligence approach to driving innovation in the boardroom, I’ve seen firsthand how IP can transform a business. But here's the catch: without the right valuation, these assets often sit idle, underutilized, and misunderstood. That's why I'm excited to dive into the latest insights from the World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO Dulce M Miranda’s comprehensive report on global IP valuation practices! In a world where intangible assets, especially intellectual property, make up over 90% of value for S&P 500 companies, it’s staggering how many organizations struggle to leverage these assets for financing. This isn’t just a missed opportunity - it’s a critical gap in many companies' strategic playbooks. 🚀 So, what’s the quantum leap we need in IP valuation? 🌐🔍 The document breaks down the core challenges - ranging from the uniqueness of each asset, the limited legal protection timeframe, to the high costs and complexity of valuations. But what stands out is the need for a unified approach to valuation, combining cost, market, and income-based methods to get a clear picture of an asset’s true worth. As IP strategists, it’s our job to not only recognize these challenges but to navigate them effectively. For companies, especially SMEs, it’s crucial to understand that IP is not just a legal formality - it’s a powerhouse for securing capital, if valued correctly. But here's the kicker: the standards and methodologies vary wildly across regions, creating inconsistencies and barriers that stifle potential growth. 🎯 What does this mean for you? As a leader or innovator, it’s essential to align your IP valuation strategies with best practices and the latest standards - think IVS, RICS, ISO 10668 or DIN77100. Training and capacity-building are no longer optional - they’re critical for staying ahead in the game. And let’s not forget transparency! By pushing for better data access and promoting best practices, we can turn IP valuation from a challenge into a strategic advantage. The future of your business is in your IP - don’t let it sit in the shadows. Illuminate its value, strategize its use, and watch as it powers your growth like never before! 👉Quote of the Day: “In the intangible, there’s power untold - value your IP, and let your success unfold!” by Dr. Benjamin DELSOL (PhD, LL.M)😉👍😎🚀 #IntellectualProperty #IPStrategy #Innovation #Valuation #BusinessGrowth #Entrepreneurship Prof. Dr. Alexander J. 🔥 If your IP team only collaborates with R&D and Legal, you’re leaving 50% of your strategic value on the table. Most companies treat IP as a technical silo. But the smartest companies know: IP becomes powerful when it connects to the business. Here are 3 surprising departments your IP team should collaborate with — and why: ⸻ 1️⃣ Finance — because your patents already tell a financial story When IP and Finance sit together, everything changes. You can: • quantify ROI of your portfolio • prioritize filings that drive revenue and margin • model FTO risks with real € and DKK impact • prepare for board-level defensibility discussions IP decisions become business decisions — not “legal expenses.” ⸻ 2️⃣ HR — because innovation starts (and leaves) with people IP + HR is the partnership nobody talks about, but everyone needs. Together, you can: • identify at-risk inventors • build recognition systems that boost disclosure rates • support succession planning for core tech areas • reduce the “IP brain drain” when key employees exit Protecting IP often begins with protecting your inventors. ⸻ 3️⃣ Marketing & Communications — because IP needs a voice Your patents aren’t just legal rights. They’re credibility assets. With MarCom, you can: • translate complex tech into compelling narratives • support launches with defensibility messaging • differentiate your innovation publicly • strengthen investor confidence A silent IP portfolio creates no value. An IP portfolio that speaks can transform a brand. ⸻ ✨ The bottom line If we want IP to have a true seat at the table, we must bring IP into the rooms where talent, capital, and narrative are shaped. Cross-functional collaboration isn’t optional. It’s the difference between an IP department and an IP engine. ⸻ 💬 What about you? Which cross-functional partnership has made the biggest impact in your organization? Or — which one do you wish your IP team would embrace next? ⸻ #IntellectualProperty #IPStrategy #InnovationLeadership #FractionalCIPO #BusinessStrategy #Leadership #RAndD #Finance #Marketing #HR #TechLeadership #StrategicIP #BoardroomReady

A patent sitting on a table has no value. I've said this to clients for 30 years. It still surprises people. When an in-house team asks me to review their portfolio, my first question isn't about the patents. It's about the business. Specifically: what are your most valuable products and services, and can I talk to the people running them? Because a patent that doesn't protect a revenue stream is wallpaper. It can be beautifully written. It can cover genuinely novel technology. But if it doesn't map to something the company is doing commercially, it has no strategic value. Your CFO already knows this, even when they can't articulate it in patent terms. The sophisticated IP strategies I've seen over three decades share one consistent pattern. They protect revenue. They protect R&D investment. They create sellable assets even from programs that didn't pan out. Every dollar you invest in R&D should produce some type of IP asset, whether the product succeeds or not. Because if the program fails and nothing was protected, all you have is a history of spending. If someone asked your team to justify your patent portfolio to the board tomorrow, could you tie every patent to a revenue stream or a licensing opportunity? If the answer is no, that's where to start. #PatentStrategy #IPPortfolio #InHouseCounsel #PatentLaw #IntellectualProperty

Intellectual property coaching: what works best for SMEs Since 2022, I have had the privilege of helping SMEs integrate intellectual property (IP) into their business strategy. The biggest challenge - Demystifying Intellectual Property. In other words, making legal concepts that are often perceived as complex, accessible to SMEs, by translating them into simple, concrete language tailored to each sector. From my experience what works best in practice : ✅ Start by defining the needs of the company - taking into account its sector of activity, level of maturity, and objectives. ✅ Set clear learning objectives to stay focused on the priority in terms of knowledge and tools. ✅ Use practical cases or educational games to connect theory to the concrete challenges of the company such as protection, defense , commercialisation of IP rights, etc. ✅ Co-develop a tailored IP strategy aligned with the company's objectives, depending on whether the assets are used to acquire a monopoly, defend market share, create a hub, etc. ✅ Provide post-coaching follow-up to support implementation and adjust the strategy in line with market developments. ✅ Involve teams, because IP culture is necessary in a company and it is built collectively to generate value. And you, as a professional, what are your best practices in IP coaching? #IPCoaching #SMEs #IntellectualProperty #BusinessStrategy #Support #Innovation #IPforSMEs #cabinetTF
