    📍One mistake I made in my early interviews was failing to present my projects clearly. I knew the work inside out, but I couldn’t explain it in a structured way — and that cost me opportunities. Over time, I realized that interviewers aren’t just looking for what you built, but how you communicate your impact. Here’s a framework that can help you explain any project with clarity: 🔹 Context / Background Start with a quick snapshot of the project. What was the situation? Why was the project important? Keep it concise, something you can explain in under a minute. 🔹 Problem You Tackled Highlight the exact challenge. What issue did you or your team face? Why was it worth solving? This sets the stage for your contribution. 🔹 Your Contribution Be specific about your role. Did you design, code, test, lead, or optimize? Talk about key tasks you handled, roadblocks you hit, and how you overcame them. 🔹 Solution Approach Walk through how you solved the problem. Break it down into steps so the interviewer can follow your thought process — from the initial idea to the final execution. 🔹 Tools & Tech Mention the technologies, frameworks, or methods you used. This shows your technical decision-making ability and how you apply the right tools for the job. 🔹 Results & Outcomes Quantify the impact if possible. Did you improve performance by 30%?     Most engineers fail system design interviews in the first 10 minutes. Not because they can't design systems. Not because they haven't scaled systems. But because they start building before thinking. I've seen it happen with very senior engineers too. I once watched an experienced engineer walk into a system design interview and immediately say: “We’ll run this on Kubernetes with autoscaling across regions, put an SQS queue in front, use Redis for caching, and shard the database…” I paused and asked: “How many users does this system serve?” Silence. They were designing for internet-scale when the question was about a small internal tool for ~100 users. Here’s the secret about system design interviews nobody tells you: → It's not about how fast you can say “Kubernetes, Kafka, Redis.” → It's about whether you can think like an engineer. When designing real systems, we don’t dive straight into solutions. We clarify the problem first. And system design interviews should be no different. So in your next system design interview, try this simple framework: [1] Clarify the problem (don't skip this please) → What problem are we solving? → Who are the users and how many? → Read/write patterns and constraints? → Latency and availability requirements? → What’s in scope vs out of scope? [2] Define requirements → Functional: what the system must do → Non-functional: SLA, scalability, latency, availability, durability, security, cost constraints, compliance [3] Propose a high-level design → Keep it simple → Walk through the core data flow and use cases of the system. → Discuss trade-offs throughout → Get alignment from your interview before diving deep (so important). [4] Dive deep on the important parts of system → Confirm the focus area with the interviewer. → This may include: Data models & storage, API design, consistency model, scaling, security → Explain trade-offs clearly [5] Improve & wrap up → Call out bottlenecks and failure modes. → Discuss how you'd implement observability across your system. → Deployments, CI/CD → Summarise the design and decisions. → Tie your solution back to the requirements, this is super crucial. System design isn’t about sounding smart. It’s about solving the right problem in the right way. Slow down. Ask first. Design second. Save this for your next interview, and refer back to it before you walk into the room. P.S.     By the time you realize this, you've already failed the interview. (Save these whitepaper to pratice daily) System design cannot be crammed the night before. I've seen it happen too many times. Engineer spends months learning SQL, PySpark, Airflow. Gets the interview call. Realizes system design is on the agenda. Watches 10 hours of YouTube in 3 days. Walks in. Falls apart. Not because they're not smart. Because system design isn't knowledge you consume. It's judgment you develop slowly, through building real things, making real mistakes, understanding why systems break at scale. When an interviewer at Google or Amazon asks: "Design a real-time pipeline handling 10 million events per day" They're not checking if you memorized a diagram. They're watching how you think when there's no perfect answer. Do you ask clarifying questions? Do you talk through trade-offs? Do you know why Kafka beats SQS in some scenarios and loses in others? That only comes from exposure. Not cramming. If your interview is 3 months away start now. Not with YouTube. Start with how real companies actually solved real problems.     I have interviewed 100+ ML/AI engineers I have never asked "explain transformers" in interviews. Here's actually what I would ask: 🔹 𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 1️⃣ "You inherit a RAG system. Users complain it's slow but accurate. How would you diagnose and improve it?" ↳ Looking for: Systematic approach, measurement before optimization, understanding trade-offs 2️⃣ "Your model works great Monday-Friday but performs poor on weekends. How would you investigate?" ↳ Looking for: Data distribution thinking, monitoring strategy, root cause analysis process 3️⃣ "You have $10K monthly budget for AI infrastructure. Design a recommendation system that scales." ↳ Looking for: Cost awareness, build vs buy decisions, incremental deployment strategy 🔹 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗯𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 "A production model suddenly drops from 95% to 60% accuracy. Walk me through your investigation." Winners discuss: → Check data pipeline first, not model → Look for upstream changes → Verify monitoring wasn't broken → Compare distributions, not just accuracy → Have rollback ready before investigating 🔹 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 "How would you build a system that summarizes customer support tickets in real-time?" I'm not looking for "use GPT-5" - I want to hear: → How do you handle different ticket formats? → What's your approach to quality control? → How do you measure if summaries are helpful? → What happens when the LLM service is down? → How would you gather feedback and improve? 🔹 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲-𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 "You can have fast, cheap, or accurate. Pick two and explain why." The best answers: ✅ "Depends on the use case - let me give examples..." ✅ "Here's how I'd make that decision with stakeholders..." ✅ "Can we redefine 'accurate' for this problem?" The worst: "I'd optimize for all three" 🔹 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗮𝘀𝗸 "Here's a Jupyter notebook that works. How would you productionize it?" I watch if they mention: → Error handling and logging → Configuration management → Testing strategy → Deployment approach → Monitoring plan → Documentation needs What gets you hired: Not knowing everything. But knowing how to figure out anything. Show me your thinking process. Tell me about trade-offs. Admit what you don't know. Explain how you'd learn it. The best engineers I've hired said: "I haven't solved this exact problem, but here's how I'd approach it..." Then they outlined a systematic plan that made sense. Your homework: →Pick any ML/AI system you use daily. →Write a one-page doc on how you'd improve it. →Include constraints, trade-offs, and success metrics. That exercise teaches more than 10 courses.   • After guiding over 10 engineers through recent interviews at NVIDIA, I realized something surprising.   Many of us trip up on the exact same things. I know I certainly did earlier in my journey.   While every loop is unique, the fundamentals of a strong engineering discussion remain consistent.   If you are prepping for a ASIC RTL role, here is the playbook I wish I had earlier in my journey:   1. The Resume Deep Dive : The biggest mistake? Not knowing your own data. Don’t just list what you did; know the specific numbers and the why behind them. -Why did you choose that architecture? -What were the specific trade-offs? Top-tier teams drills down to find the curiosity behind the implementation.   2. Visuals always Wins : When asked an open-ended architectural question, stop talking and start drawing. -Whether it’s MS Paint or a whiteboard, sketch your thought process -Draw the waveforms (even for simple logic). It shows you can communicate complex ideas clearly and verifies your thinking.   3. Embrace the Vague : Some questions are intentionally vague. They aren't looking for a quick answer; they are looking for you to fill the gaps. -Ask clarifying questions. -State your assumptions out loud.   4. The Trade-off Mindset : There is rarely a "perfect" solution. It’s always a balance of PPA (Power, Performance, Area). For Seniors: Go beyond the block level. Discuss scaling, verification challenges, software impact, and complexity.   5. The "Curveball" : Be ready for questions intentionally designed to throw you off. -Often, candidates let one tough moment derail the entire interview.     Dear software engineers, if you're appearing for system design interviews in the next 2 to 4 weeks, repeat after me: 1. I will not jump into the design without asking questions. ➤ Most weak designs come from unclear requirements, not lack of knowledge. If you don’t understand scale, traffic patterns, data flows, or constraints, every architectural choice becomes guesswork. 2. I will treat the interview like a conversation, not a presentation. ➤ At senior levels, system design is collaborative. Engineers who constantly check assumptions, confirm user behaviour, and clarify goals outperform those who deliver a scripted answer. 3. I will explain why I choose something, not just what I chose. ➤ The best engineers aren’t judged on listing components. They’re judged on the reasoning behind tradeoffs, constraints, and alignment with real-world engineering principles. 4. I will adapt my solution to the problem instead of forcing a template. ➤ Good system design is not a checklist. A Principal Engineer knows that every prompt has a unique bottleneck, and the candidate who identifies and solves that bottleneck stands out instantly. 5. I will take clear decisions instead of hiding behind hypotheticals. ➤Interviewers want to see engineering judgment. Listing options without committing shows fear. Choosing one path and explaining tradeoffs shows maturity. 6. I will think about failure modes early, not as an afterthought. ➤Real systems fail for unexpected reasons. Candidates who say “Here is how this can break” demonstrate deeper thinking than those who only design the happy path. 7. I will ask for the constraints that matter instead of assuming them. ➤Scale changes everything. Ten requests per second, ten thousand, and ten million are three entirely different systems. Great engineers don’t guess scale, they clarify it. 8. I will not try to sound clever by overdesigning. ➤ Good engineers know simplicity wins. Simple systems are easier to debug, easier to scale, and easier to review. Complexity without purpose is a resume filter, not a strength. 9. I will focus on tradeoffs instead of memorizing buzzwords. ➤ Anyone can say “caching, sharding, load balancer.” Real depth appears when you justify why caching helps this workload or when sharding solves this bottleneck. 10. I will practice speaking, drawing, and reasoning out loud. ➤ System design is fundamentally a communication interview.     In the last 10 years, I've applied to almost all the MAANG+ companies for Cloud & DevOps positions:  - Applied Twice at Google - Applied to Microsoft (Cleared 3 rounds) - Applied to Amazon Twice - Applied to Meta (for Production Engineer_ - Had a chance to sit in for the SRE interview at Apple Each time, I went through the hiring processes, I learned a lot from my experiences regarding industry standards & my skills. Here are my learnings from all the interviews (insights that are rarely talked about)  1. Confidence Opens Doors - Walk in with confidence, but back it up with examples from your work.   – Show them how you’ve done similar things before or learned fast on the job.  - Give specific examples of how you created solutions, the more detail you give, the more genuine you seem  2. Talk Out Loud: They Care About Your Thinking Process   - Coding rounds are less about the final answer and more about how you think.   - Always explain why you chose this algorithm, data structure, or approach.  - Example: If I ask you to sort a linked list and array, explain how you’d handle each input without hardcoding.   3. Problem-Solving >>> Memorization   - You won’t be asked standard questions all the time. –They want to see if you can break down problems into smaller steps.   – Focus on understanding the problem statement first.   - Example: At Google, questions often started vague, like “Optimize Spark performance.” You had to ask questions to clarify the scope before jumping in.   4. Business Impact > Fancy Code  - Interviewers love candidates who think about real-world impact, how their work improves systems, reduces costs, or handles failures.  - Don’t just explain your code. Say, “This approach scales better because…” or “This method reduces downtime during outages.”   5. Expect Tricky Questions & Learn to Adapt   - You’ll get questions that test your ability to learn on the go.   - They don’t expect you to know everything but want to see if you can stay calm, ask the right questions, and figure things out.  - Example: Amazon asked about migrating hot and cold storage. Even without prior experience, the key was breaking the problem into steps and proposing ideas.   6. Failures Are Normal, Show How You Recover  - Big Tech doesn’t expect perfect systems, they expect fail-safes.   - Prepare examples where something failed, and you recovered quickly.  - Example: They asked about a time when servers went down during peak hours. My answer focus was on how recovery systems reduced downtime instead of avoiding failures completely.   7. Simplify Your Approach. Don’t Overcomplicate   - Many candidates try to impress with complex answers and overengineered solutions. Don’t.   - Focus on clarity and efficiency. Explain why you’re choosing one approach over another.  - Example: For a database optimization question, start with indexing strategies before diving into custom caching layers.  Continued in the comments ↓

    The interview question that trips up even senior engineers: Tell me about a challenging project. Here's the framework that transformed my client's interview performance: When your mind goes blank from nervousness, don't panic. Use the IAS method: Impact: Start with what was at stake for the business. Approach: Explain your unique technical strategy. Scaling: Show how your solution handles growth. Example: Instead of rambling about technical details, say: "Our payment system was failing during traffic spikes, costing $50K daily. I identified a database bottleneck, implemented connection pooling and caching, then verified it could handle 10x our peak load." This approach helped a senior engineer I mentored land offers at both Google and Microsoft after being rejected twice before. The difference? She stopped explaining every technical detail and started highlighting business impact first. Your technical skills get you interviews. Clear communication gets you offers.

    A Data Engineering scenario based Interview conversation 🔥 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿 🕵🏻♀️: Imagine you're working on a data pipeline that ingests data from multiple external APIs. One day the pipeline slows down significantly. How would you go about identifying and resolving the issue? 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲👩🏻💻: First, I’d check pipeline monitoring dashboards to see where the latency is occurring....whether it's during ingestion, transformation or load. If it's ingestion, I’d look at API response times and error rates. Maybe one of the APIs is throttling us or returning large payloads. I'd also check logs to see if there were retries or timeout errors. 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿🕵🏻♀️: What if the API latency is inconsistent....sometimes fast sometimes slow? 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲👩🏻💻: In that case, I’d implement retries with exponential backoff and also consider asynchronous ingestion. Adding circuit breakers can help prevent cascading failures. I might also cache responses for non-real-time needs to reduce the load on upstream APIs. 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿🕵🏻♀️: You're told that a dashboard showing customer metrics is suddenly blank. The data refresh happens through a nightly pipeline. Where do you begin? 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲👩🏻💻: I’d first check the orchestration tool like Airflow for task failures. Then inspect logs from each pipeline step. I'd validate whether the upstream data sources were available and if any data transformations failed due to schema changes or missing fields. 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿🕵🏻♀️: What if all the pipeline steps show green but data is still missing? 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲👩🏻💻: Then I'd look into data volume metrics. A green status might just mean no data was ingested but without errors. I’d compare current vs historical row counts and look into source system logs. Also, checking partition dates and timestamps can reveal if the data landed in the wrong partition. 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿🕵🏻♀️: Your pipeline processes data every 15 minutes. Business users report that reports are lagging by hours. What's your approach? 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲👩🏻💻: I’d review pipeline execution times over the past few runs. Maybe one step is taking longer than usual. I’d also check if there’s any resource contention in the compute environment like memory or CPU saturation. If we use a queue system, I’d inspect queue backlogs & consider breaking larger jobs into smaller batches and scaling horizontally. 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿🕵🏻♀️: Final question... How do you ensure a new data pipeline is production-ready? 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲👩🏻💻: I follow a checklist: unit and integration tests for all transforms, SLA monitoring and alerting, idempotent writes to avoid duplicates and logging at every stage. I also run the pipeline in shadow mode for a while comparing outputs against legacy pipelines.
