Whether you’re in logistics, finance, law, or marketing, you need to ask: • How will AI reshape my industry? • How can I adapt before I’m left behind? • How am I investing in the human edge? This isn’t about chasing shiny AI certificates. It’s about building a mindset of adaptability, curiosity, and resilience — and strengthening the foundations like math, critical thinking, and systems understanding. Planning for jobs, not skills. That’s a risk multiplier. McKinsey just surveyed 1,925 companies and 4,000 employees across Europe and the U.S. The verdict? A widening gap between what businesses and employees need, and what HR is delivering. This was shocking to me. ✅73% of organizations do operational workforce planning. ❌But only 12% of U.S. HR leaders look 3+ years out. That means most “planning” is really short-term staffing. Not future skills. Not AI-driven shifts. Not what the business will actually need when the ground moves under us. What’s at stake? Talent gaps that stall growth. Misalignment between business and people strategy. HR functions stuck reacting instead of leading. But there’s a path forward. Here are 5 moves organizations should make now: 1️⃣ Extend your planning horizon. Look 3–5 years out. Align people plans with long-term business goals and market shifts. 2️⃣ Shift from roles to skills. Jobs change, skills endure. Map future skill demand (AI literacy, data analysis, sustainability) and start investing early. 3️⃣ Stress-test scenarios. Don’t just build one plan. Model for disruptions such as automation, regulation, and supply shocks. Prepare pivot options. 4️⃣ Link workforce + financial planning. Talent is capital. Integrate headcount and skill development into the same forecasting the CFO uses. 5️⃣ Build adaptive capacity. Make reskilling and redeployment continuous. Equip people to shift as priorities do. The most important skills today and in the next years will be human capabilities: critical and analytic thinking, resilience, leadership and influence, overlaid with technological literacy and AI skills to amplify these human capacities. World Economic Forum's new Future of Jobs Report provides a deep and broad analysis of the drivers of labour market transformation, the outlook for jobs and skills, and workforce strategies across industries and nations. It's a really worthwhile deep dive if you're interested in the topic (link in comments). Here are some of the highlights from the Skills section, which to my mind is at the heart of it. 🧠 Analytical Thinking Leads Core Skills. Skills like analytical thinking (70%), resilience (66%), and creative thinking (64%) top the list of core abilities for 2025. By 2030, the emphasis shifts even more towards AI and big data proficiency (85%), technological literacy (76%), and curiosity-driven lifelong learning (79%). This shift underscores the critical role of technology and adaptability in future workplaces. 📉 Skill Stability Declines but at a Slower Rate. Employers predict that 39% of workers' core skills will change by 2030, slightly lower than 44% in 2023. This reflects a stabilization in the pace of skill disruption due to increased emphasis on upskilling and reskilling programs. Half of the workforce now engages in training as part of long-term learning strategies compared to 41% in 2023, showcasing the growing adaptation to technological changes . 🌍 Economic Disparities in Skill Disruption. Middle-income economies anticipate higher skill disruption compared to high-income ones. This disparity highlights the uneven challenges of transitioning labor forces across global regions, particularly in economies still grappling with structural changes. 🚀 Tech-Savvy Skills in High Demand. The adoption of frontier technologies, including generative AI and machine learning, is increasing the demand for skills like big data analysis, cybersecurity, and technological literacy. These trends indicate that businesses are aligning workforce strategies to integrate these advancements effectively. 📚 Upskilling Is the Norm, Not the Exception. By 2030, 73% of organizations aim to prioritize workforce upskilling as a response to ongoing disruptions. This reflects a shift in corporate investment priorities towards human capital enhancement to maintain competitiveness.

Fresh out of the oven, the World Economic Forum's The Future of Jobs Report 2025 was finally released yesterday. It highlights how macrotrends - like tech advancements, economic shifts, and climate priorities - will reshape the labor market by 2030. The report, based on insights from over 1,000 global employers representing 14 million workers across 22 industries, underscores the urgent need for workforce transformation and the new job opportunities emerging as a result. While the full 290-page report has a ton of interesting insights, here are the key highlights from my side: (1) Technological Shifts: Digital access, AI, and automation are set to transform 60% of businesses by 2030, driving demand for tech-related roles and skills such as AI, big data, and cybersecurity. (2) Green Transition: Climate change mitigation and adaptation are expected to fuel growth in renewable energy and sustainability roles, with 47% of employers planning climate-related transformations. (3) Workforce Evolution: Reskilling remains critical as 39% of current skills may become outdated by 2030, with 85% of employers prioritizing workforce upskilling initiatives. (4) Future Outlook: From 2025 to 2030, 170 million new jobs are expected, but 92 million jobs might be lost. Healthcare, education, and tech will grow, while clerical and admin roles may shrink. According to the World Economic Forum, "technological change, geoeconomic fragmentation, economic uncertainty, demographic shifts and the green transition — individually and in combination — are among the major drivers that are expected to shape and transform the global labor market by 2030." [1] Tech changes: Broadening digital access is anticipated to be the most transformative trend, "with 60% of employers expecting it to transform their business by 2030". Advancements in technology (AI + information processing) are also expected to drive both the fastest-growing and fastest-declining roles, and fuel demand for technology-related skills. [2] Economic factors: Increasing cost of living is the second most transformative trend, with economic slowdown remaining top of mind. Slower job growth and mixed outlook for inflation will likely drive an increase in demand for creative thinking and resilience, flexibility, and agility skills. [3] Green transition: Climate-change mitigation is the third-most transformative trend overall, driving demand for roles such as renewable energy engineers, environmental engineers, and electric and autonomous vehicle specialists. [4] Demographic shifts: Perhaps the most interesting trend of all (for me, at least), is the one around demographic shifts. Aging and declining working age populations in higher-income economies and expanding working age populations in lower-income economies are reshaping the labor markets. Aging populations will likely drive growth in healthcare jobs while growing working-age populations will fuel demand for educators. [5] Geopolitical dynamics: Geoeconomic fragmentation and geopolitical tensions are expected to drive changes in the operations of businesses, including offsohring and reshoring. Also a few interesting items to note in the report: * Technology-related roles are the fastest growing jobs (in percentage terms), including "Big Data Specialists, Fintech Engineers, AI and Machine Learning Specialists". Meanwhile, Clerical and Secretarial Workers are expected to see the largest decline (in absolute numbers). ** Due to change in demand for skillsets, the need to upskill and reskill workforce is urgent. According to the WEF report, "if the world’s workforce was made up of 100 people, 59 would need training by 2030". This is significant.
