    AI Deepfake Fraud is happening : FinCEN’s Warning to Financial Institutions Generative AI has democratized deepfake creation and criminals are taking full advantage. The U.S. Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) has observed a surge in deepfake-driven fraud targeting banks, credit unions, and other financial entities. These schemes involve AI-generated or altered IDs, photos, and videos to bypass KYC, CIP, and CDD controls, open fraudulent accounts, and launder illicit funds. The risks are not theoretical. FinCEN highlights patterns such as: •GenAI-altered passports, driver’s licenses, and synthetic identities •Rapid, high-value transactions to gambling sites or offshore crypto exchanges •Account access from suspicious IPs or devices •Deepfake voices and videos in phishing, BEC, and romance scams Key Red Flags for Financial Institutions: •Identity documents inconsistent with each other or with the customer profile •Use of third-party webcam plugins during live verification •Refusal to undergo MFA or “technical glitches” during ID checks •Reverse image searches matching known AI-generated faces •High chargeback volumes or unusual payment patterns Best Practices: • Deploy #phishing resistant MFA • Incorporate live video verification & liveness detection • Use deepfake-detection tools and metadata analysis • Flag and escalate anomalies in customer behavior or documentation FinCEN is urging SAR filers to use the term FIN-2024-DEEPFAKEFRAUD when reporting cases linked to these tactics. Reverse-image search a frame using Google Lens or TinEye. If the original is from an AI tool demo or lacks context (no credible news outlet), be wary. 2) Assess Basics: Length and Quality (30 seconds) Is it under 10 seconds or blurry? Play at normal speed first—if it feels "off" visually, proceed to details. 3) Scrub and Zoom: Hunt for Visual Tells (1-2 minutes) Pause frequently. Zoom into hands, text, faces, and backgrounds. Slow to 0.25x speed to catch motion glitches. Use your phone's zoom for extra scrutiny. 4) Listen Critically: Audio Check (30 seconds) Mute, then unmute. Note any robotic timbre or sync slips.     Imagine this: You receive an email from your company’s Chief Financial Officer. It’s marked confidential. It mentions a sensitive transaction that needs to be handled discreetly. You’re suspicious. It sounds unusual - possibly phishing. But then you’re invited to a video call to discuss it. You join. On screen, you see the CFO. You see other members of the management. People you recognise. Voices you know. Everyone looks and sounds exactly as they should. Your doubts begin to fade. You authorise a transfer. $25 million. Days later, you check in with the head office to confirm everything went through. What? Who? When? The company’s management never sent a message. The meeting never happened. The people on the call weren’t real. And the money is gone. This isn’t a hypothetical risk. It happened. A finance employee at a multinational firm in Hong Kong was tricked into wiring $25 million after attending a video call where every participant - including the CFO - was a deepfake. What is a deepfake? It’s a highly sophisticated type of fraud where AI-generated video and audio is designed to mimic real people - in real time. How it works: ↳ Scammers collect publicly available footage and train AI to replicate speech, tone, and behaviour of people ↳ They create meetings imitating the face and voice of people the victim trusts. ↳ They trick their victim to perform transactions. As deepfake technology evolves yoy, it’s becoming harder to differentiate what is real and what is fake, no matter how educated you are. This is not about weak passwords or bad policies. It’s about trust being manipulated with precision. What can financial institutions do to protect themselves from deepfake fraud? ↳ Train teams to recognise social engineering - even when it looks and sounds familiar ↳ Don’t rely on voice or video alone for verification ↳ Use multi-step approvals for sensitive transactions ↳ Add deepfake risks into your fraud response and incident procedures ↳ Monitor communication patterns that deviate from normal practice ↳ Ensure escalation paths are accessible and respected, even when urgency is claimed.     When we recently ran the numbers on our own applicant pipeline, the result stunned us: 780 out of 1000 engineering applicants were fraudulent. Not just sloppy resumes. Full-blown, coordinated fraud campaigns on great American companies. And we're not alone. Heads of Talent across the industry tell me the same thing. The FBI has even warned that many of these schemes are backed by North Korea, with IT worker infiltration as a state strategy. But here's the worst part: the scams are getting really good. One customer shared a story about a candidate who breezed through screening with an impeccable resume. Great pedigree, flawless answers, even passed the technical interview. But when the background check came back … total fraud. Someone else's career was completely stolen. Another recruiter told us about a "dream candidate" who turned out to be a literal deepfake. On video. Polished, articulate, believable… until they asked him to move his hands. The image glitched. Then they ran a liveness test: "Cover your left eye, now hold up 3 fingers." Frozen screen. Scam exposed. And others still are seeing LinkedIn profiles and résumés copied verbatim, with nothing changed but the email, redirecting callbacks straight into a scammer's inbox. The impact is massive: - Tens of thousands of dollars wasted in interview hours - Real candidates overlooked while your team is tied up chasing ghosts - A real risk of one slipping through and poisoning your trust with customers and investors Why is this happening now? Because fraudsters are using AI to generate resumes, invent social proof, even lip-sync answers on video. This isn't a one-off. It's AI on offense. The only way forward? AI on defense.     If you got a phone call from your child, your spouse, or your business partner saying they were in trouble… would you know if it was real? I want to talk about deepfake phone scams. Apparently with just 15 seconds of recorded audio, scammers can now clone a voice convincingly enough to fool close family members and colleagues. AI-generated voice deepfakes are becoming so sophisticated that experts rate them a “12 out of 10” threat. I think this is so insane. Sadly, I already know of a handful of our clients who have received calls like that and THANKFULLY did not fall for it. For immigration lawyers—and really, anyone handling sensitive information—this can turn into a huge operational risk. Especially for those of us who post video content. We need to protect ourselves from these scams at all cost. So, here are five simple protocols that can reduce the danger: 1️⃣ Treat urgency as a red flag during a call Scammers create crisis scenarios on purpose. If someone demands immediate action, especially involving money, confidential information, or sensitive decisions - you should pause. The more urgent it feels, the more skeptical you should be. I think this can be hard for many of us who have an instant reaction to a loved one in alleged distress. 2️⃣ Hang up and call back using a verified number Caller ID can be spoofed. We know this. Deepfake voices CAN sound very real though. But scammers can’t answer a legitimate number already stored in your contacts. A simple callback protocol stops most fraud attempts. 3️⃣ Use a private code word With family or key staff, you could create a phrase that isn’t posted online and practice using it. If the caller can’t provide it, the communication isn’t safe and you know you’re being scammed. 4️⃣ Strengthen videoconferencing and financial protocols Require video for sensitive conversations. Avoid virtual backgrounds for important meetings. And institute a second-channel confirmation rule for financial or confidential requests. NEVER authorize funds transfers by phone or email alone!! 5️⃣ Talk about it - especially with vulnerable people Train staff regularly. Speak openly with children and older adults about deepfakes. Normalize verification. Make it clear that double-checking is expected and it is not rude. I think to even write this post is so crazy to me. This is what people were scared of when it comes to AI. Deepfakes exploit panic, confusion, and shame. Clear protocols and shared expectations neutralize that power scammers could have over anyone. AI is advancing quickly. Let’s dive into the stories, how to avoid this tech-tastrophe, and why in-person onboarding might be your best defense. Tales of When Companies Hired Bots The Fake Cybersecurity Pro A tech company hired someone with a flawless resume and interview skills. Deliverables were vague, and further investigation revealed their “hire” was a deepfake trying to steal data. The Mysterious IT Contractor A government contractor hired someone who skipped in-person meetings citing “camera issues.” Turns out they were AI-generated, aiming to infiltrate systems. These real-world cases underscore how crucial it is to verify who’s on the other side of the screen. Spotting Deepfakes 1) The Blink Test Deepfakes struggle with natural eye movements. Odd blinking? Big red flag. 2) Glitchy Visuals Look for inconsistent lighting, blurry edges, or mouths out of sync. 3) The Spontaneity Challenge Deepfakes stumble on unscripted answers. Ask follow-ups that require thoughtful responses, like: “What’s a challenge you overcame in your last role?” In-Person Onboarding: The Human Test Once hired, bring candidates in for onboarding. Face-to-face time confirms their identity, builds trust, and strengthens team connections. Can’t make it in? Use extended live video calls with ID verification. Why It Matters Accidentally hiring a bot can lead to: - Data Breaches: Many aim to steal sensitive information. - Wasted Resources: Training someone who doesn’t exist is a time sink. - Reputation Damage: Explaining this mistake is no fun. Recently, a recruiter at a remote digital studio encountered a shocking experience—a job candidate who used deepfake technology to attend a virtual interview. The signs were subtle at first: reluctance to turn on the camera, unnatural facial movements, and distorted video quality. When asked to perform a simple gesture, the video abruptly ended. It was a chilling reminder that as technology advances, so do the tactics used to deceive. Unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated incident. Cases of job applicants using AI-generated avatars or voice-changing tools are starting to surface more frequently—especially in remote hiring scenarios. 𝗔𝘀 𝗛𝗥 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝘄𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗲𝘀: 1. Are our hiring processes resilient against such threats? 2. Are our teams trained to spot the red flags? 3.
