To be a great tester, you don’t need: • An ISTQB certificate • Shiny automation frameworks • Thousands of LinkedIn followers • A flashy dual monitor desk setup • Every textbook term memorized • To treat developers like enemies • To "break things" just for the thrill • 10+ years of experience • A badge from a MAANG company • To chase bugs all day • To chant “manual testing is dead” or glorify every automation script • To pass 3 rounds of coding trivia or crack Leetcode puzzles • To blindly worship AI as the future of testing or fear it as your replacement What you do need: • A curious mind that questions even what looks certain • Critical thinking that cuts through tools, trends, and tech jargon • Empathy for the user who’ll struggle silently and for the developer who needs fast feedback • The courage to ask uncomfortable questions before assumptions ship as features • The clarity to share the actual state of the product, not sugarcoated dashboards • And now more than ever, the ability to test AI itself: - Spotting hallucinations masked as insights - Challenging opaque decisions from black-box models - Exposing biases baked deep into datasets - Knowing when automation needs a human override AI does not remove the need for testers.     Why AI Will Never Replace QA Engineers - And What That Means for the Future. Artificial Intelligence is transforming nearly every industry, and software testing is no exception. AI-powered testing tools promise faster test execution, smart bug detection, and even self-healing automation scripts. Sounds impressive - but here’s the truth: AI will never fully replace skilled QA engineers. And that’s a very good thing. Here’s why AI can’t - and shouldn’t - replace QA engineers: 1. Context and Critical Thinking Are Irreplaceable AI can run tests and analyze patterns, but it lacks the human ability to understand the why behind a feature or a bug. QA engineers bring critical thinking, domain knowledge, and business context that machines just can’t replicate. They ask, “Does this feature actually solve the user’s problem?” AI doesn’t. 2. Exploratory Testing Requires Human Curiosity and Creativity Not every bug follows a predictable pattern. Exploratory testing - where QA engineers creatively explore an app beyond scripted scenarios - uncovers usability issues and edge cases AI can’t anticipate. This intuitive, experience-driven testing is essential for truly great software. 3. Communication and Collaboration Depend on Human Skills QA engineers aren’t just bug catchers; they’re communicators, collaborators, and advocates for quality. They negotiate priorities, clarify requirements, and coach teams on best practices. AI can’t replace the empathy and social intelligence needed to drive quality culture. 4. AI Tools Are Assistants, Not Replacements The future of QA is collaboration between humans and AI - where automation handles repetitive, data-heavy tasks, and engineers focus on strategy, exploration, and problem-solving.     AI is not going to replace your quality assurance team. But the AI software testing market is growing 7x over the next 10 years.  These AI tools are already adding so much value in terms of pushing development teams to do test driven development (TDD) and offering new dedicated tooling for end to end testing (ie Checksum), UI testing, etc… But that doesn’t change the need for technical leadership to DECIDE whether to implement a test driven culture, create and document a clearly defined test plan and decide where in the product and software lifecycle automation is the right investment at any given moment. Human leadership will continue to be the core driver of testing success…but the AI tools we have access to are raising the bar very quickly for what human leadership can achieve. The data from Market.us shows AI testing tools growing from $49M in 2024 to $351M by 2034. That's a 21.8% CAGR. Our team at ScrumLaunch just published a breakdown of what's driving this and what actually works in practice. A few things stood out: 1. AI catches edge cases humans miss. When you write test cases manually, you think about normal scenarios - correct login, incorrect password. AI generates comprehensive test scenarios including empty fields, special characters, extremely long inputs. The stuff human testers consistently overlook. In my experience, even if we think we’ve tested EVERYTHING imaginable, there is always something some real user does within 24 hours that was unexpected. AI is awesome for covering these types of cases. 2. Self-healing test scripts are real. Test scripts break every time you rename a button or move a field. AI can automatically update test scripts to match new UI structures without manual rework. This alone saves teams hours every week. 3. Non-technical testers can now write test scripts. Describe a scenario in plain English - "test login with incorrect credentials" - and AI generates the actual Selenium script. The barrier just dropped significantly. But integration isn't plug and play. You still need skilled people to review AI output and guide it toward business relevant testing. Human testing teams aren't going anywhere. At ScrumLaunch, we're seeing AI-generated test data save massive time and requirements analysis tools catch vague specs before they become problems. The cost savings are real, but the upfront infrastructure investment isn't trivial.

    AI has transformed the way we build, test and deliver software at Chase. My colleague and friend, Michele Willis, leads our core engineering solutions team and shares more on what’s possible in IT Brew. Continuous component testing has long been one of those “necessary but tedious” parts of software development. It’s essential for quality, but let’s be honest, it’s rarely anyone’s favorite task. That’s why I’m leaning into the way our teams are using AI agents to tackle this challenge. As Michele recently shared, our agentic testing framework is now running across 80 services, handling everything from analyzing code dependencies to generating and running test cases, freeing up developers to focus on what they do best, which is solving big problems. But the real magic happens when humans and AI work together. By being curious, building and scaling our own agentic frameworks and more, our teams are asking questions and deepening their understanding of how these technologies work. That’s where true innovation happens. The takeaways from me are: 1. Don’t shy away from new and evolving AI tools. They are here to stay and changing everything. 2. Get curious, experiment, and see what you can build. You’ll be surprised to see how easy it is to create now. 3. Deeply understand how the technology works in order to build with quality.     I don’t see AI as a threat to testing — I see it as my strongest assistant. AI helps me find patterns faster, but I decide what actually matters. We still think, question, and challenge the product — AI just helps us get there quicker. AI can generate test cases, but it can’t understand real user frustration the way we do. I use AI to handle repetitive tasks, so I can focus on critical thinking and quality. We’re not being replaced — we’re being upgraded. AI doesn’t replace testers; it amplifies our skills. I still own the testing strategy — AI simply supports my decisions. We bring context, domain knowledge, and judgment. AI brings speed and scale.
