    Imagine if someone took your diary. Not to expose you, but to study you. Quietly. And without telling you. That’s what just happened in Denmark: Three and a half million hospital records, including psychiatric notes, were handed over to an AI research project without the patients ever being informed. Legally, it’s allowed. Ethically, however, it’s problematic. We're not talking about neutral data points here. These records contain moments of fear, illness, and vulnerability. They are words spoken to a doctor in trust. Of course, you can pseudonymize them. You can follow the law. However, you cannot strip away the duty to treat people as ends in themselves. Consent is not a formality. It's about dignity. I believe the greatest risk here is the undermining of trust.     Every day, AI systems make thousands of decisions that shape our lives—who gets hired, who receives loans, whose medical scans get flagged as urgent. But here's the uncomfortable truth: these "objective" algorithms are perpetuating and amplifying human bias at machine scale. When hiring algorithms systematically downrank candidates with female names, when facial recognition fails on darker skin tones with error rates up to 35%, when pulse oximeters—literal life-saving devices—are less accurate for patients with darker skin, we're not seeing technical glitches. We're witnessing automated discrimination. The problem isn't just in the code—it's in the mirror we refuse to hold up to ourselves. AI bias stems from four systemic sources: ⚖️ Historical bias: Credit algorithms trained on decades of redlining policies don't find "risk patterns"—they automate historical injustice. 👥 Representation bias: Face ID trained mostly on light-skinned male faces treats everyone else as anomalies, not stakeholders. 📏 Measurement bias: Video interview tools that judge "professionalism" by eye contact embed Western cultural biases, automatically failing deaf candidates or neurodivergent thinkers. 🔁 Algorithmic bias: Predictive policing creates feedback loops—over-policing leads to more arrests, which "validates" the bias.     Kenya just traded 25 years of citizen health data access for $20 per person. Last week, Kenya became the first country to join a US-sponsored health agreement that grants Washington unprecedented access to Kenyan health data for the next quarter century. Personal medical records. Genetic information. Lab samples. Insurance details. Digital health platforms. In exchange: $1.6 billion over 10 years. That's roughly $20 per Kenyan citizen, per year, for unrestricted data access that bypasses Kenya's own Data Protection Act. Here's what makes this complicated: Kenya spends $37.50 per capita annually on healthcare. Europe spends $2,600. That's a 69-fold difference. When you're facing an empty health budget and your healthcare system is collapsing, $1.6 billion isn't just attractive… it's survival. US pharmaceutical companies understand exactly what they're getting. Kenya offers real-time access to large, genetically diverse populations for clinical research. African populations have greater genetic variation than other populations worldwide, making them ideal for understanding how different genetic profiles respond to medications. Yet Africa bears 25% of the global disease burden but hosted only 1.1% of clinical trials in 2023. And here's the hypocrisy: In 2024, the US restricted other countries from accessing American health data on national security grounds. Executive Order 14117 specifically prohibits distribution of Americans' genomic, biometric, and health data to designated countries. The justification? Access to bulk sensitive personal data increases the ability of countries to engage in malicious activities. So the US prohibits access to American health data while simultaneously signing agreements for unfettered access to Kenyan health data. US federal law governs the framework, not Kenyan law. This matters beyond Kenya. Data sovereignty requires economic sovereignty. No amount of well-intentioned frameworks can substitute for the bargaining power that comes from not being desperate for external funding. The ethics are about building AI aligned with helping people (in the safest way) improving patient care and protecting data. But when countries can't afford to say no, those ethics become secondary to economic survival. First, understand the power dynamics. Then ask whether data-sharing agreements are actually equitable, or just extractive relationships dressed up as partnerships. *** Should health data access agreements guarantee that resulting treatments are registered and accessible in the data-providing country?

    Generative AI Ethics Is Not a Product Problem — It’s a People Problem The Ivy League MBA Wink and Nod (You know the look.) You’re in a boardroom. Someone brings up ethics. The data-driven, MBA-trained execs smirk and nod politely — then go back to their spreadsheets. I know. I used to be one. For them, ethics is a compliance box. A committee. A CSR panel at a tech conference. That’s teenage thinking. They're out to lunch. That's weak-kneed, false bravado. Short-sighted. Myopic. The Truth About Ethics Ethics isn’t a product feature. It’s a reflection of the people building the product. It’s a leadership problem. A culture problem. A people problem. You can’t add ethics in after the fact. You can’t outsource it to a committee once the product is already live. You can’t write a 10-point “AI Principles” memo and call it good. You get ethical AI when you build with people who care about doing the right thing from the start — who ask hard questions, challenge assumptions, and think long-term. And the data backs this up: 67% of consumers say they do not trust AI-generated content (Cognizant, 2024) 90% want transparency around whether AI was used (Getty Images, 2024) 73% will only trust Gen AI if ethical guidelines are in place (Capgemini, 2024) Companies that operate with integrity consistently outperform over time (U4, 2024) Consumers want transparency. They want honesty. They want to use products built by companies they can trust. Integrity is not a burden — it’s a business moat. OpenAI: A Case Study in Values Misalignment (Let's look at how not do to things) If you want a real-world case study of why culture and leadership matter, look at OpenAI. Once, they promised to build safe, transparent, “open” AI. Today, nearly every founding leader who championed that mission is gone: Dario & Daniela Amodei → Founded Anthropic, built around alignment and ethics. Ilya Sutskever → Founded Safe Superintelligence Inc., focused entirely on responsible AI. Mira Murati → Founded Thinking Machines Lab, dedicated to transparency and accessibility. John Schulman → Left to join Anthropic. These aren’t Luddites or cynics. They are some of the brightest, most capable minds in AI — and they walked away because they knew: You can’t build an ethical product inside an unethical culture. You can’t fake integrity. You can’t add it later. Many people assume the Gen AI race is already won. That the current giants will shape the future. It's not. It's just beginning. And here’s my prediction: The players dominating headlines today will be a footnote in Gen AI history. They’ll be remembered, not for what they built — but for how they built it. For the shortcuts they took. For the trust they burned. And a new generation of visionary founders, builders, and designers will look back and say: "Thanks for showing us exactly how NOT to do it."
