What once required skilled attackers, significant time, and coordination can now be executed with automation, generative AI, and autonomous agents. We are already seeing the shift. AI is enabling fraudsters to: • Generate hyper-realistic deepfake voices and videos to impersonate executives and authorize financial transfers. • Automate large-scale social engineering campaigns that adapt in real time based on victim responses. • Create synthetic identities by blending real and fabricated personal data to bypass identity verification systems. • Use AI-driven malware and scripts to probe financial systems and payment infrastructure for weaknesses. • Launch AI-assisted phishing campaigns that are nearly indistinguishable from legitimate communications. But the real risk isn’t just the technology. It’s the velocity.     If you're involved in the development lifecycle of your companies products - read this. Teams across the product lifecycle have spent years building systems that depend on predictable customer behaviour and reliable evidence when resolving disputes. The introduction of accessible image-manipulation tools has removed the stability that many refund and quality-assurance processes rely on. The example circulating today is a manipulated burger photo that turns a cooked patty into what appears to be raw meat. Tools of this type can now produce convincing alterations in seconds. This shift affects several functions simultaneously. Customer service loses the ability to trust photo evidence. Fraud teams face a new attack vector that blends digital forgery with legitimate order data. Product managers responsible for returns, refunds, and satisfaction guarantees now operate in an environment where the traditional verification method no longer provides assurance. Teams need to respond with structured, cross functional measures: 1. Re evaluate evidence standards Photo based confirmation should not be treated as a single source of truth. Introduce multi factor validation for high risk claims. This can include structured metadata checks, behavioral risk scoring, and pattern recognition across claims. 2. Introduce tamper detection capabilities Modern image forensic models can detect common manipulation signatures. They do not eliminate the threat, but they raise the barrier and create cost for attackers. 3. Harden refund policy logic Policies relying on unconditional visual proof should transition to controlled rulesets that include order history, claim frequency, and anomaly signals. This reduces reliance on a single point of failure. 4. Educate frontline teams Operators handling disputes must understand that AI manipulation is a routine threat. Provide clear escalation paths and ensure frontline actions are consistent with enterprise risk appetite. Close the loop with product design and supply chain. Some categories can integrate unique identifiers or packaging elements that are difficult to forge. Small design choices can materially raise the cost of manipulation. AI acceleration creates opportunity, but it also creates instability in trust based systems. Product teams that absorb this early will prevent losses and maintain customer trust without compromising operational agility. This is now a core component of modern product lifecycle security, not a peripheral concern.

    I was reviewing some recent fraud cases this morning and it hit me how much the game has changed. I remember when you could tell a human was behind an attack. You could actually see the hesitation while they figured out their next move. That hesitation is gone. The biggest advantage fraudsters have right now isn't sophistication. It is just speed. What used to take hackers weeks of research is now being done by AI agents in minutes. Automated phishing campaigns are adapting to victim responses in real time. They don't get tired and they don't make typos. If we rely on a human analyst to review a queue, we have already lost. We are officially in the AI vs AI era. On offense, AI agents engage thousands of victims at once. On defense, we need AI models that can freeze transactions and challenge identities in milliseconds. The bottleneck today isn't detection. Yet, as AI becomes central to fraud prevention, its responsible and transparent use is just as important. Consumers must be protected not only from fraud but also from the unintended harm of biased or opaque AI models. The stakes are high: an estimated 42.5% of fraud attempts now use AI, and nearly a third are successful. Criminals are evolving too, leveraging deepfakes and generative AI to bypass controls. The global market for deepfake detection is projected to grow 42% annually, from €4.73B in 2023 to €13.5B by 2026. Fraud doesn’t appear in isolation—it often comes in waves and trends. Machine-learning models can evolve as new behaviors emerge, unlike static rules-based systems that require post-loss analysis to update their logic.     “Can’t AI just figure out the fraud on its own?” It sounds logical to set it up and let it run. But here’s the problem: When humans make bad calls, you can ask them to explain. When #AI makes them and hides its reasoning, you may never know what went wrong. If you cannot trace it back, you cannot assign responsibility. That means: • You cannot correct the system. • You cannot show regulators you did your job. • You cannot hold anyone to account if it caused harm. A recent McKinsey global survey found that 40% of organisations say explainability is a key risk in adopting generative AI, but only 17% are actively working to mitigate it. That gap is a red flag. Now add in #agenticAI that carry out multi-step tasks and decisions without prompting. It’s like getting your final grade in school with no breakdown of which answers you got right or wrong. Without that detail, you can’t see where you went wrong, who graded you, or how to avoid repeating mistakes. This is why AI governance matters. The Internet and Mobile Association of India recently asked the government to clarify how the DPDP Act applies to training AI models.  Right now, the rules on handling personal data for AI are unclear, and that uncertainty could lead to systems making decisions no one can explain later. In fraud detection, that’s not a small glitch but a blind spot! You might have an AI model quietly downgrading a high-risk alert because, in past data, similar cases were wrongly marked as harmless. And you only find out months later… when regulators want to know why you missed it.     🚨Recent Standard Chartered bank's credit card fraud incidents in Bangladesh aren’t just individual cases- they expose industry-wide trust gaps. In multiple reports, BDT 50K+ was transferred to MFS accounts within seconds -without customers ever sharing their OTPs. The response from banks? 👉”Since it was OTP verified, it’s not fraud.” But as Product Managers, we know the issue isn’t that simple. This is a product trust challenge, security issues- not just a compliance checklist. 🔎Probable Loopholes I see as a PM: • SMS Gateway Leak → Banks rely on 3rd-party SMS providers. If OTPs leak there, fraud is inevitable. • Excessive 3rd-Party Access → Outsourced vendors (like BPOs) sometimes get full database access. That’s a massive risk. • Weak Fraud Detection → Same High-value, unusual card-to-MFS transfers aren’t flagged in real time. ✅Possible Solutions (Tech + Product): • Shift from sms based OTP → adopt stronger MFA (biometric, facial recognition, in-app approvals). • AI/ML fraud models → detect similar transaction predict as scam alert in real-time and block suspicious transactions. • Fraud scoring system → device, location & transaction velocity checks before approval. • Joint monitoring frameworks → Bank + MFS + Telco working in sync. • Access governance → limit & audit vendor access instead of full DB exposure. ❇️But It is evident that these fraud incidents may involve internal collusion- whether through bank employees, OTP gateway providers, or outsourced BPO companies. In such cases, the bank must acknowledge the issue and take full responsibility, rather than denying accountability. 💡Digital finance adoption is growing — but without security & trust, growth won’t sustain. As PMs, our role isn’t just building features. It’s safeguarding user trust at every touchpoint.

    I came across something today that honestly surprised me… a completely fabricated PAN and Aadhaar generated using Google’s Nano Banana model. Not photoshopped. Not edited. Fully generated. And the accuracy was uncomfortably close to real. It reminded me of something we don’t talk about enough: Our identity systems were never designed for a world where AI can create an entire person… documents, biometrics, and a digital footprint in seconds. Most companies still think of fraud as a linear problem. But AI has changed the curve entirely. Fraud now scales exponentially. We’re already seeing signals everywhere: • Synthetic identities that blend real + fake data • AI-generated documents that pass basic verification • Deepfake faces beating low-quality liveness checks • Stitched IDs matching fonts, textures, shadows, and seals perfectly And for every new defensive feature, attackers get smarter just as fast. The uncomfortable gap here is this: Attacker capability is evolving at the speed of AI. Enterprise defenses are evolving at the speed of policy. That gap is where the risk truly lives. We can’t rely on the assumption that identity = document + face + OTP anymore. That world is gone. If AI can fabricate identities with precision, then our detection, verification, and trust frameworks must evolve with the same intelligence and speed. This isn’t a fear narrative. It’s a readiness narrative. The future of fraud isn’t about spotting mistakes… it’s about understanding manipulation at the micro level: pixel patterns, metadata inconsistencies, lineage signals, behavioral mismatches, and the subtle irregularities AI still leaves behind. Identity isn’t just a compliance box anymore. It’s becoming one of the biggest attack surfaces. And as we enter 2026, I think every organization needs to ask: Are our systems built for the world we live in, or the world we left behind? Because the next wave of fraud won’t come from people hiding in the noise.
