The world runs on code

How Advanced Analytical Applications shape the world of Finance

Most people will agree with me when I say "Coding & Data Visualization techniques are valuable skills" but what is the relevancy for Finance professionals?

I recently came across an article which talked about how the recent advancements in artificial intelligence are disrupting some of the traditional roles of finance professionals. In the world of Finance, not everything can be done through Excel workbooks. There are many software and programs that need to be learnt to perform tasks quicker and efficiently with a greater degree of accuracy. With that been said, finance professionals with these skills could be considered as rare, needless to say that it also gives that additional 'edge'.

I started learning Python, Power BI, and Tableau on my own a couple of months ago, and it's seemingly easy to pick up with some proper self-determined learning. I had this fallacy at the very outset that programming jargon would be hard to understand but it was way easier than I ever imagined. I'm also glad I took the plunge towards learning Tableau and Power BI, and ever since tableau has basically been my go-to platform in generating excellent visual analytics and dashboards with an array of features that cuts your work time in half!

A recent article spoke about the growing murmur that the finance market is in need of a technological overhaul.

" JP Morgan Chase  is putting hundreds of new investment bankers and asset managers through mandatory coding lessons, in a sign of Wall Street’s heightened need for technology skills".

Even Economists are learning to code, helping them to benefit from the capabilities of big data software. At one of Tableau's latest product release in 2019, they had introduced an 'Ask Data function' to use Natural Language Processing (NLP) to enable people to ask data questions in plain language and instantly get a visual response in Tableau itself. Now how amazing is that? Well there are other analytical platforms to look out for as well such as Arcadia Data and Looker, it's always better to research and get connected with the newest data platforms in the market.

So how can you start? There are many free tools out there that you can use to learn analytical visualization techniques and programming in a fun way, so don’t put yourself out of the competition because you feel like it will be too hard to learn. I would suggest learning platforms such as Udemy, FreeCodeCamp, and coursera to get started with.

"Make today the day you learn something new"

Good article Dilnima Perera. Great initiative to train yourself and inclusion of embedded references in the article. I like the challenge to your fellow Finance colleagues: “....... so don’t put yourself out of the competition because you feel like it will be too hard to learn. I would suggest learning platforms such as Udemy, FreeCodeCamp, and coursera to get started with.”

Hey it is great that you augment your skills with technology so that you dont risk being outdated! Good job!
