WORKPLACE VIOLENCE
The recent tragic events in Pittsburgh and CA have prompted me to write another article about workplace violence. My heart goes out to all affected by these events. Please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers.
•2 million American employees report being victims of workplace violence each year
•Hundreds of worker fatalities every year are workplace homicides
•Homicide is the leading cause of death in the workplace for women
•No workplace is immune to workplace violence!
•OSHA states employers must take precautions to identify, minimize and prevent the risks of workplace violence.
You have a right to a safe workplace, free from recognized hazards that are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees.
Some things for you and your HR dept. to consider
- Conduct effective employee screening and background checks. Check in with supervisors and create an open door policy to encourage discussion about employees.
- Employee engagement
- Create a system for reporting signs of potentially violent behavior.
- Make counseling services available to employees.
- Put mental health and stress relief into your monthly wellness newsletter.
- Develop an EAP which includes policies and procedures for dealing with an active shooter situation, as well as after action planning.
